Re: [Avid-L2] Re: One ama clip bogs down SNDX 5.5.3 on mac?
hours' worth to a timeline for transcoding (washing files for Avid DS) and
MC6 was not happy. I wound up doing it in 20-25 minute chunks, then
transcoded the sequences. MC was happier when I cleared both the source and
record monitors cleared.

I hadn't noticed this behavior before. Now the really neat thing I stumbled on is when drawing shapes in Paint Tool. I always wanted a way to cursor the shapes with the arrow keys to move them left right or up down. I never new that with a shape highlighted in paint tool the slip keys, "M" "<" ">" "/" will move the shape left and right 1 increment or 10 increments. The left right up down behavior is changed by holding down the option key while hitting the keys. These have probably been there forever I just never knew before. Maybe somebody else can use this too.

[Avid-L2] Re: One ama clip bogs down SNDX 5.5.3 on mac?
You have to turn off AMA if you don't want it to automount drives. However, Avid only looks on the surface level of the drive, so you can drop any QTs, etc into a folder on that drive and you won't have a problem. And yes, plenty of us have asked for a "don't auto mount from drives" option, but it hasn't happened yet. Wait until you plug in a USB stick with a few files on it while you are working
.
As for the sluggishness, yes, I too have experienced that with AMA files. I think it has to do more with the codec than anything length. I had a RED job that drove me nuts with the "right click / wait forever" thing.
It appears worse in 6 as you don't get an hourglass. So you have no idea what the heck is going on. Lots of things that are slow in 6 do the same thing. No hourglass, so
am I hung, have I crashed, is it doing something, did I not actually click it? Amazing how the little feedback of progress bars or hourglasses makes such a huge psychological difference on time perception.
Finally, I find with AMA file that play back choppy in the timeline, that it is usually the audio that is the culprit. Make a video only sequence and suddenly you can play fine. In those situations I find exporting and reimporting just the audio tracks solves everything. Amazing that Avid can play video but not audio smoothly since it obviously takes more horsepower to play video. Maybe it's because the GPU is used for video and the CPU for audio? Just taking shots in the dark here.

[Avid-L2] Re: Davinci Resolve to MC 6 import metadata strangeness
I havé been using this pipe for nearly a year and I even if I persist in believing that the mxfs will work I often end up exporting qt files and importing those into the avid. I used to have a lot of problems with resolve mxfs getting quarantined so I export the resolve timeline in a block. I have never much success with bm's after sales service so I just hope they read this and will see. I know BM is active on creative cow.

Except at some moment in the afternoon, the MXF master clip I had imported all disappeared and where replaced by numerous new masterclips with new names that correspond to original Canon C300 rushes that I cut using AMA. The metadata of these new files have an UNC to the rushes but when I reveal the media file of each of these new files, it opens the original Resolve MXF. The problem is that the length of the MXF does not corespond to these new "consolidated" files so I get an error message. Worse still, the conformed timeline changes, as the good MXF masterclip file is replaced by the new shorter masterclips. I think that there is some bug as the MC6 seems to get confused with all the meatdata in the Resolve export, but I do not understand how it can erase masterclips and replace them with new one automatically. I hope this is clear ...

[Avid-L2] Re: DPX sequence / Metafuse issue.
I've seen this many times before and have determined that the banding is sadly unavoidable. However, I cannot tell you what the exact cause is -- and neither could Avid.
Some time ago, I needed to create a number of smooth gradient back plates for some episodic title sequences and saw the same thing. I tried both the Title Tool and Marquee, every flavor of DNxHD (including uncompressed), every project type/framerate/resolution -- and 10-bit file depths -- and the banding would not go away.
And the banding was readily apparent in Avid's Record window, in the HD-SDI output of my Mojo DX -- and on my BMD Ultrascope.
I was so frustrated that I opened a support case with easily repeatable instructions. And even though they saw the exact same thing -- I was offered no explanation and no solution. Nice work Avid.
Ultimately, the only technique I could use was to apply successive Boris blurs to the back plates -- and it still didn't look good. Of course, that approach is not even an option for you.
You know, it's embarrassing to have clients sitting behind you when neither MC nor Symphony can display a simple smooth gradient without banding -- no matter how much bandwidth you throw at the problem.
I expect to see that type of compression artifact from a cable or satellite provider -- I don't expect it from my "broadcast quality" editing application.

One ama clip bogs down SNDX 5.5.3 on mac?
Now that I've moved to SNDX 5.5.3 Mac os 10.6.8 I find when I ama link to one long SD avid 1:1 .mov file of a 50 minute ish show the whole system gets very laggy. I hit the hamburger menu and it's 5 to 6 seconds for it to open and I get spinning beach ball for several seconds when right clicking before things happen. I'm getting use to the sluggishness but this seems very problematic and I only have one bin with one ama clip cut into it's own sequence so I can play it back through my Tek scope for error logging. I haven't notice ama being so sluggish on other systems but I haven't worked much with ama. Is this because it's a long clip? Well I recently had to upgrade my direct tv box. I owned my own since around 95 ish back when you had to buy the receiver. Apparently next year my old box would stop working. Perhaps the new SD receiver I have responds differently, although cbs is still center cut in prime time as is abc. Hmmmmmm. Tell em to keep making the "mistake" I like it letter boxed and then I don't have to switch to my DTV OTA box to get full picture.

The last couple years that's what I've been told. I haven't had anything kicked back but I've tried to be preemptive once I heard and I always ask the production folks and that's what I've been told going on two years or so. I think domestically they air letterboxed so it's really not an issue in the states as far as I know. At least on my direct tv it comes up letterboxed IIRC.
