Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Why Does It Take So Long?

Another little trick that some may not know is to HOLD DOWN Cmd/Ctrl+.

This will spam media composer and usually gets it to stop faster.

I think all the WGA members are busy taking editing courses. I think they finally figured out they weren't going to get the reality editors to join the WGA so they might as well join the editors. ;-)

Certainly, unionizing, health benefits, insurance, wages and conditions
of work have been discussed gently and reasonably on the L, L2 for many
years.

Re: [Avid-L2] Editors, AE's picket, win union contract, benefits

really, you can't find any other place to talk about politics or the union? Then you didn't even try.

Since you are a member of this list you probably have access to all of the Yahoo Groups. I found a whole section on there devoted to the subject of Government and Politics. Under the Politics section there are 27647 groups. Try some of those.

If you want to focus on union and labor issues a search for IATSE brings back 23 groups.

A search for Labor Union brings back 454 groups.

That was with a very minimal effort.

Re: [Avid-L2] Editors, AE's picket, win union contract, benefits

Because when OT crap like politics and religion get on this list they tend to drown out the members asking questions and looking for help about topics that this list was created for. I often make rules that move subject lines straight to the trash, but the more of the OT crap you let on here without saying anything about the more is going to show up.

And the bottom line is that I really don't care about the political views of anyone on this list other than my own. If I want to talk politics or religion I'll talk with my friends or find a venue created for that.

[Avid-L2] ISIS data migration tool

A few interesting notes on this-

Do not use to write to an ISIS that is in service. It will overwhelm it, and throw it into a Network Degraded status. If this happens all your editors drop offline, and everything needs a reboot.

If you try to sync with more then one system, keep an eye on the bandwidth, and the status of the ISIS being written to- if you go network degraded you WILL need to force the sync client to re-boot before attempting to start again.

I'm seeing 85-95 MB/s per sync system of read, full throttle throughput.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Editors, AE's picket, win union contract, benefits

Whoa, just read this. Wow is the grammar bad.

It's basically an MPEG promotional piece. Good to know the place is organizing. Sometimes I do wonder what the risks are. MPEG doesn't guarantee job security. They say it's illegal for you to get fired because of your affiliation or your activeness in the union, but there's such a gray area. It's easy for a production company to let you go because of "lack of work". It leaves you with no grounds to challenge them. And the reps at MPEG just shrug.

Any thoughts? I'd love to get more info to better understand the whole process

I'm in the union and I love being a part of it. It's a limited union though. Maybe someone more seasoned can shed some light.

I'm NY based. I know there are more union houses in CA and the union's stronger there.

I bet Deadline Hollywood uses non-union reporters and editors. Well, they probably don't use any editors.

If we don't delve too deeply into "unions are great/evil" and keep the tone fairly civil, I think such discussions can, and perhaps should, take place here.

Where else would you suggest?

I don't know of any venue as robust and rich.

Re: [Avid-L2] Editors, AE's picket, win union contract, benefits

The subject line is plenty clear, I think. Why not just skip reading any further? Then the rest of us can talk if we want.

Personally I'm not interested in getting into politics and union issues on this
list. And I am a member of and support the 700. It's all worth talking about
and discussing, but I believe it's best left somewhere else.

how pathetic is our aversion to the political sphere that our illustrious group

Re: [Avid-L2] Editors, AE's picket, win union contract, benefits

There are many tormented sentences for sure! This sort of thing is way too common in all sorts of media, including the products that are my responsibility.

I'm less concerned about the inferred politics of the article than I am
about the grammar and spelling skills of the writer. The article reads
almost like it was translated from another language.

Like most picture editors, I can't claim to be good with the spelling,
but I like to think I can execute a sentence. Does Lynda.com offer
journalism courses?
