I am just talking out of my butt....but Ive had odd stuff with H264 out of
Avid before. We found that the X264 codec ( free opensource) works better. We
had good luck using that with QT Pro, coming from Anim QT(out of avid) For
even more control, there is the MEGUI (also a free opensource project). Now
the bad news...its a complicated beast with a bunch o'parts to install and
master. One of my IT guys has it sorta figgered out, but I havent really had
the time to play with it much, so I cant offer you any scripts, at this
point.

Hello,

I'm exporting a 720p video to H264 from Xpress Pro HD 5.2.7. The video's
high contrast black & white, blown out whites. The white wall in several
shots throughout the exported video flashes between white and grey.

I've never had trouble exporting anything to H264, I have the correct
QuickTime and nothing has changed on my system. I exported other videos to
H264 after this problem and they're fine. I've tried exporting this video
with several combinations of H264 settings and I always get exactly the same
result.

I tried exporting the video to DNHD and the problem does not exist there,
however, there is a different flashing where the edges of the blown out
whites meet other darker objects in the frame. I brought the whites way down
to see if it would resolve the issue, but it did not. I've included a link
to a short excerpt from the H264 and the DNHD exports. I hope someone can
help. Thanks!

Hi Paul,

Thanks, I appreciate that. And thanks for the suggestion. I was so busy trying various settings, I didn't even think of that. I'll give that a shot tomorrow and I'll reply with the results.

Thanks again,

Re: [Bulk] Re: [Avid-L2] Avid files with no bin

A quick tip is to let Avid build the data base on the added mxf folder and
drag the MMOB.mdb index file from the open mxf file from the desktop to an
empty bin in the Avid project. This will be populated with the clips in the
mxf folder.

Perhaps part of an evil plan to sabotage the competition who have gone "Mac"? Allowing your PC based infrastructure to rule the world!!! ;-) Thanks for all the info. Really makes me want to be back on a terrablock.

Is there still issues with Macs on fibre when trying to do the multi write/ project sharing? I remember it was only working over Ethernet for mac clients a while back.

Yes

Existing volumes might want to be changed. Maybe someone doesn't want to share and just wants it on their computer. And finally, ProTools doesn't like network drives. (The same reason it doesn't really work with Unity)

[Avid-L2] Re: Paragon NTFS

So when you create a terrablock "volume", is that the correct term?, do you decide if it is a multi write volume at that point? Can that be altered later like the raid choices are/were. What would be the reason to make a volume multi write or not? Is there a speed trade off or some other reason? Of course two tin cans and a string would be enough to get me off the SanMP if I had anything to say about it.

I tried the Paragon 7.x a few months back to get from HFS+ (internal
SATA) to NTFS (external USB) on a Leopard machine. Whatever I did
wrong I couldn't see the files when I mounted the external NTFS-
formatted drive on a regular PC (WinXP) I saw *something* but it
wasn't the few gigs of media I tested with.

Fortunately the end-user had MacDrive on their PC so I reformatted the
external to HFS+ and let it go at that. Never did figure out what
went wrong.

There's also this: http://www.tuxera.com/ which I've not yet tried
in its commercial configuration.

[Avid-L2] Re: Paragon NTFS

It's interesting how it works. For the most part, it appears and operates just like Unity. Right down to sharing within the project.

With the Multi write function, Terrablock serves up the drives as network drives. So Macs and PCs don't see formatting. However, you need to actually format the drive at some point, and as long as you do it NTFS, it is handled by the server without issue. If you wanted to format the HFS, the server has to have the latest version of MacDrive installed so it can handle the formatting.

You would only need this if you planned to change the drive from multi write to a regular drive at some point. So you might not need Mac Drive after all.

Of course, in the real world clients bring in drives of all flavors so having MacDrive on your edit systems might be a necessity as it is in our universe.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: 3D monitors and finishing

An excellent point- one of many you just made, Terry.

Stats say that over half of all women and about 42% of men wear
glasses. At least 12% of the population are assumed to have binocular
problems which effect depth perception. Those are potential 3D
roadblocks that no amount of hype will change.

Between 4-10% are considered "3D challenged" due to profound sight
issues, color blindness, binocular issues or some other reason. Some
folks even have 20/20 vision but still don't "get it". For them, it's
in the brain.

So it's possible that 20 out of 100 people may not be able to enjoy the
full 3D ride.

The remaining 80% just get headaches.

Re: [Avid-L2] Paragon NTFS

Thanks. That's the result we had when using it a year or two ago.
Fine for copying media but too slow for editing. In this case, I just
need it to copy media - but was hoping editing was possible now, too.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Paragon NTFS

err... uh... John's pretty much got my problem pegged. So, uhm, what
do we get from the terrablock upgrade? And what version of MacDrive
are you running? I honestly wouldn't mind going back to a PC, at
least for the symphony. We went mostly - mac when we had to add final
cut to the mix. All ours systems have both FCP and Avid.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Paragon NTFS

I've got it. (haven't installed it yet...)

but that doesn't help me copy from an HFS+ drive to an NTFS drive on a
mac... Or does it?

So, you're saying, the terrablock upgrade is something I should do?
I've had the software for about 6 months, and promised them I'd use
it... but 3.x works so well for us I haven't tried it. So, if you're
listening, Jim, this is me, all excited about 4.x!

[Avid-L2] Error opening bin

getting the following error when opening bin

Unable to open file 'bin'. Not enough adjacent material to create
transition.

Funny thing. I know that there are only master clips in that bin. No
sequences. No titles. No saved effects. Just master clips. From
tape.

Any ideas?

[Avid-L2] Re: Paragon NTFS

I'm confused here. Paragon is to have complete access to an NTFS volume from a Mac, right? Since Greg is primarily a Mac house I assume he wants to use NTFS volumes on a Mac Avid. Does the Terrablock upgrade allow NTFS Volumes on the Terrablock to be accessed with full read write access from a Mac. Is that what the upgrade helps with? What if the client comes in with an NTFS portable drive? Other than copying the media to a terrablock volume is there some other way the terrablock upgrade facilitates an NTFS portable client drive being used on a Mac avid?

If 3D becomes common, the kid down the street will be doing it in his basement. Don't delude yourself that this will "save" the industry any more than HD did.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid files with no bin

Elegant, as long as you move all the files to the target drive MXF
Folder first, otherwise this requires 2 lengthy database rebuilds.

[Avid-L2] Re: 3D monitors and finishing

I've seen "no glasses" 3D tv and it's amazing. It's poor quality currently and the rendering of the media to make it work a lot of work but it will improve.
3D glasses will be the way for a while but no glasses 3D TV is possible and will happen...

There are a lot of sceptics and rightly so. But I have a strong feeling 3D will be the next big step in our post business and frankly at the moemnt we need it!
