Thanks Greg & David for pointing me in the right direction.
I guess late afternoon on a Friday is not the optimal time to begin
refreshing old info through one's brain.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Audio Question

Ben,

You are looking for EQ not Pitch Shift. The idea is that hum, buzz or
room noise can be eased out of the signal so as not to be nuisance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roll-off

Enough math there to keep Wilson happy.

The steepness or slope of the roll off is part of the design and can be
variable. You may also find your roll off filter is some one else's high
pass filter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-pass_filter

Of course some one else's high pass filter might be an unsharp mask and
have no relationship to audio whatsoever.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Audio Question

I would propose, not with any youthful self-assurance or anything,
that roll off is not a law, but rather... a label for a function often
added to certain pieces of equipment. For example, a microphone,
might have a bass 'roll off' switch. In the wikipedia definition, it
explains that roll-off is in relation to filter circuits- one further
assumes that your test does not include such a filter.

Maybe.

[Avid-L2] OT: Audio Question

OK... who wants to help a dumb old guy?
Yes, that'd be me.

So... I'm looking for an English translation of the definition below,
as well as a method to demonstrate it.

"Roll-Off:
A decrease in audio gain in relation to octaves.
For every octave decrease in frequency there is a difference of -12dB
in audio gain."

I thought I had deciphered this and did the following:

1- Created 2 pieces of tone. One was 300Hz and the other was 600Hz,
both at -20dB.
2- I put a Pitch Shift plug-in on the 600Hz clip and lowered it 1
octave (verified the shift through comparison).
3- Based on the definition above, my hypothesis was that the altered
clip would now play back at -32dB. It didn't. It played back at -20dB.

Any takers?

TIA,

B

See if Virtual Lab can help.

[Avid-L2] OT: good data recovery software for software RAID (stripe) on Windows 7?

I pretty much know I am screwed but...
Has anyone used any data recovery software capable of rebuilding a software RAID set on windows?
I'm looking at "r-studio".

I have a stripe set on windows 7 built from 2 disks (windows OS stripe), and something has gone haywire and one of the disks shows up as a failed dynamic disk, while the other shows up as a foreign disk. If I try to import the single foreign disk it warns that the otherdisk in the set is missing and data will be lost if I continue... So I don't want to.

I've tried mounting the drives on another windows machine, and the machine doesn't boot while the disks are both attached... not good.

Sending it out for pro data recovery would probably be prohibitively difficult and expensice (it's a big rackmount 12-drive array).
I can live without the data but don't want to.

Thanks in advance!

best-
-Nat

[Avid-L2] HDCAM SR "s" frame rates

Hi guys

For the 5500 or 5800 do I need any special board or hardware to support
playback of "s" frame rates from SRW-1 cameras (s.23.97, s29.97, etc).

Any settings I need to look out for in the deck for proper playback?

Thanks

Um, FCP still isn't Cocoa. So while Adobe maybe the last major third party,
Apple would be the last First party developer.

Also, Jobs refers to Adobe as a Second party developer while talking about

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Jobs throwing down the gauntlet...

Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X (Cocoa)?

Um, FCP still isn't Cocoa. So while Adobe maybe the last major third party, Apple would be the last First party developer.

Also, Jobs refers to Adobe as a Second party developer while talking about apps and App developers as Third Party, but then at the end calls Adobe Third Party.

Don't drink the juice Tone.

[Avid-L2] [PR] Intelligent Assistance solves Final Cut Pro Media Management Problems

Intelligent Assistance solves Final Cut Pro Media Management Problems

Matchback Magic makes Final Cut Pro media bulletproof
through offline and double system workflows.

Burbank, CA (April 28, 2010) – Intelligent Assistance, Inc has released software – Matchback Magic – that adds vital matchback information to Final Cut Pro media files to make them very robust through many postproduction workflows.

"Matchback Magic makes it possible to conform to master quality files regardless of what happens during editorial", says Intelligent Assistance's CEO Philip Hodgetts. "With Matchback Magic it doesn't matter if an editor or assistant renames clips or file names, or even if they lose reel name or Timecode reference. The conform to master media will still happen correctly."

Matchback Magic adds metadata into the media file that is carried with the file, regardless of what happens inside Final Cut Pro or to the file. At the end of the editorial process, Matchback Magic extracts that information and provides either a fully conformed (to the original high quality media) Final Cut Pro Sequence, or an ALE file for conforming a Cinema Tools database, or even an Excel Spreadsheet for manual conforming.

"When working on a feature film last year, I realized that there was a need for the sort of metadata tracking within Final Cut Pro media, that other alternatives provide," continues CEO Hodgetts, "so we built on Apple's work with QuickTime metadata and achieved our goal of robust handling of important metadata, so that Final Cut Pro media never loses reference to its parent media."

The Matchback Magic demonstration version, freely downloadable, includes the capability to protect media. Should postproduction proceed smoothly, there's no need to ever buy the software, while the otpion is there if the worst case scenario should ever happen. Matchback Magic is faster and simpler than using Final Cut Pro's Media Manager for these workflows.

Matchback Magic is now available now from the Intelligent Assistance store for US$495 (MSRP at http://assistedediting.com/MatchbackMagic/. An introductory special reduces that to $395 until May 31st, 2010.

NFR versions for review are available, contact Philip Hodgetts, details below.

[Avid-L2] Re: MC v5 & Bus error

If your talking about main thread buss errors I assume you're on a Mac. I see them on my Imac MCSoft 3.1.3 with no hardware. I usually get 4 to 5 a day. Seems to happen when I'm quickly shuttling JKL back and forth and occasionally when I quit. It doesn't seem to happen when I scrub through a shot with my wacom tablet but JKL's are another story. Don't know if it's been fixed but my understanding of the main thread buss error is it's a very generic mac error and could be from numerous things. Perhaps somebody more mac error aware can chime in.

[Avid-L2] Re: Need help with removing CC on S/N DX

From what've understand there will be another mxf file related to clip which will hold cc and in transfer manager you can select if you want to keep cc when you send to playback or not
As well, not 100% sure :)

It's kind of funny, that is what a lot of us were asking for. The ability to maintain the CC and not lose it once we did anything to the picture.

Of course, FCP has a better solution now separating out the CC so you can even edit it in a third party program. This is why I was interested by the MC5 metadata stuff, but I haven't been able to find out anything about it.

Nope - thanks, but I tried that...
dropping a 3D effect on V1 works great on our older HD MC's
but on this new S/N DX, the CC appears to be totally bulletproof.

You have no access to the metadata yet. I believe something was mentioned about that in V5. I'll let you know after the Editors' Lounge this month, unless someone from Avid wants to chime in now.

[Avid-L2] Re: Need help with removing CC on S/N DX

ooopps - Sorry,
I negelected to mention that I was refering to HD,
and yes Terry, I agree, in SD the method you described (I believe a top crop in Resize set at + 10 nails it) works like a chapm at removing CC.

Any ideas on HD ??

Thnx

[Avid-L2] Re: Need help with removing CC on S/N DX

Thanks, but our situation is with tons of legacy material on SAN that will periodically be repurposed - there is some ongoing acqusitions, but mostly shows/movies that have been previously ingested.

We need the ability to be able to go in and selectively delete a sentence or two that may have language issues or obscenities..

I'm guessing you are talking SD here? If so, throw a resize, then crop the top down to remove it. You should be able to see the CC at the top of the frame in your composer monitor.

[Avid-L2] Re: Registry Storage error

Download the one I uploaded to the files section and follow the instructions that are enclosed. This is part of them:

Note: For Windows XP Pro users you must set the Scrubber executable to run in Windows 2000
Compatibility mode. To do so do the following:

a. Navigate to the Scrubber Directory you creating in Step 1.
b. Right click on scrubber.exe and choose Properties
c. Click on the Compatibility tab
d. Check off the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" option
e. From the pulldown menu choose "Windows 2000"

Re: [Avid-L2] Need help with removing CC on S/N DX

A wild guess.
You can set capture settings to include or not include CC.
So capture in parts with different settings.

Keep in mind that CC info contains the info as well as display time, so it's
very well possible the CC info is a few seconds before display time, so make
sure you have a bit of margin.

[Avid-L2] Need help with removing CC on S/N DX

We need help with removing CC.
We have a new Symphony Nitris DX vers 4.0.5 running on an HP Z800, and we're looking for a way to defeat the CC only on certain sections of a program for S&P issues.
With or older MC (vers 3.5.9) all we had to do was drop a 3D or Resize effect on a ceratin section of V1 - that would effectively defeat, or eleiminate, the CC for that section.
But it seems with the newer Symphony Nitris DX, that method is NOT able to remove CC.

I'm guessing that there must be a way to do this - any thoughts ??

Thanks in advance,

Dave Burke

[Avid-L2] Re: FR: v5 Interface Settings Back

I don't think we should jump to any conclusions based on an early beta version of the software. Also, I would post this on the "official" Avid forums if you feel strongly about it.
