Re: [Avid-L2] RedLine in Timeline

Are they all using the same playback quality setting?  JB

Hello everyone,

They were working fine for a while but at some point 2 suites started to have issues. Dropped frames, timeline with red lines etc. They said nothing has changed.
In the 3rd suite they are editing without issues.
They tried to copy from and to the storage and no issues at all.
They Created a new proyect and dragged a bin with raw footage and its fine. You can play well that media. But when you play that media in a Sequence or you do a match frame from that sequence... dropped frames.
This is an unmanaged small post house, so every editor could install everything as they want....
 Any idea to troubleshoot this?

[Avid-L2] OT: Interesting historical glimpse at DaVinci

I stumbled across this and wanted to share.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WvP5_HFQSk

It's an interesting walk through the history of DaVinci starting with VideoTape Associates (VTA) formerly here in Florida.  A facility I used for several higher end projects many, many years ago.

What I find most interesting is the authors inclusion of a broad industry perspective throughout his presentation, exploring the technology, business and human aspects of its development.

It would be nice to see something similar for Avid.  Haven't found it yet.

Cheers,
Karl Knowles

Re: [Avid-L2] Why is a keyable Animation Codec graphic generating a "8 bits greyscale (Y800)" alpha channel?

You are correct that Animation at 100% is lossless, but it is an old 8-bit codec. Uncompressed 8-bit was once a commonly used codec, too.
Attached are the render settings in Adobe Media Encoder, note in the area I circled the only options for bit depth are 8bpc and 8bpc + alpha (which just adds a 4th 8-bit channel as the alpha).
If there's a way to get it to work in 10 bit (or greater) I've never seen it (but I'll leave that to folks who have more codec expertise than me).

afaik QT Animation is transparent up to xBit.

@pale.edit: Source for QT Animation "only 8Bit"?

(jicymi): bit rate and bit depth are two different things)

Animation can be lossless, btw.

That explains it I hadn't found that bit rate spec for the animation codec.  So Animation codec is 8 bit I thought it would be higher but I never really thought about it seriously.

Animation Codec  is 8bpc, so I don't know that converting it to a higher bit rate would improve anything.
How does it handle a 10 bit codec like ProRes 4444?

Playing around with Avid mxf files in VLC and I see the alpha channed media that Avid created when importing an HD Animation Codec keyable graphic is in the format "8 bits greyscale (Y800)."  Did some googling and got some info.  I know Avid generally imports the alpha channel uncompressed.  Why does it end up being only 8 bit?  I have my renders etc... set to 16 bint and I'm importing the graphic to DNX 220X.  I'm not having any issue just wondering why the "uncompressed alpha" is 8 bit not 16 bit.  Is this a limitation to DNX 220X?  No problem just trying to learn something new.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid MC Pricing Overview (Was: Avid Perpetual License Price Increase?)

Thank you for doing this, Job.

Kinda sad that it's so complicated that it needs forensic analysis. :-)

But hey, I'm a loyal user, so what'm I gonna do?
