[Avid-L2] Re: Solarization in QC

I'm assuming the poster meant 0.5mv below peak white so .if peak white is 700mv then he's seeing peak white at 699.5mv.

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

I'm also curious what scopes were used to be able to see 0.5mV on the Y/RGB scale

When you say peak whites were about .5mV do you mean the peak value is 700.5mV on the scope?  I'm not saying that's the problem with the solarization but wanted to clarify your spec for Peak White and how it is defined.

With that workflow the most likely issue would be the grading element.
Its possible the QC setup isn't right but unlikely as all content woukd show the issue not just yours.
Obviously the first step is to view the content of the tape and see if it is really there.

[Avid-L2] Re: Solarization in QC

Could you get geeky on this and elaborate as to how shooting Log creates this issue?  Is it a by product of the reduction of actual detail to avoid clipping when shooting log that when stretched back out leads to greater level steps between values?  Obviously 8 bit has greater steps, that can lead to banding, than 10 bit but I've always felt the stretching out of the log signal adds noise, although I can't say I see the noise in normal video.

So let's get our Nerd on.

Yes thats a quantising issue on the chroma.
Shooting Log can cause this in 8bit recording systems. Its one of the trade offs.

You could try my Mp4 to QT.
Tested with Sony, it even retains the Sony timecode if that's important to you.

I was wondering if anyone has a smooth workflow to input footage from Sony A7S cameras. I use Premiere to convert to Pro Res (Avid won't AMA or import originals) but its a slow process. I think Windows users have a converter they use. Anyone on Mac work with this footage much and have a system? I'm shooting on Thursday with this camera and will have a bunch of stuff to input.

thanks

I think Resolve is happy with A7s footage now, including audio.

Don't often hear the term 'solarization' used in a QC report

For our younger viewers: Back in the olden days, "solarization" was an effect available in hardware DVEs, which intentionally induced heavy banding in the incoming video. It was cool at the time, and there are plug-ins to create that kind of effect today. In this case, the "effect" seems to be an artifact, and from the replies, it may be unavoidable.

I would use Sorenson Squeeze Pro to convert directly to Avid media - and drop those files in a new MXF folder on the media drive.
