[Avid-L2] Re: Bins don't stick when placed on 2nd monitor Avid 8_9_4?

I'm on a laptop MacBook Pro with 2 27" Apple monitors and I've had the same problem with bins, source/record monitors, project window, and timeline not sticking. I have to constantly save and resave my workspaces.

be aware that this is computational intensive, don't think you'll get more than 3-6FPS transcoding speeds

Here is the metadata from a clip report:

Size 1.25 TB
Duration 2:03:57 h
Files 107
Input ARRI
FPS 23.98
Resolution 2880x1620
Type Mxf
Codec ARRIRAW

I can not ama link to these .mxf files in Avid 8_9_4.  I tried installing the old Arri DNxHD mxf plugin but it is not longer compatible and now that I see what the media is it wouldn't work anyways.  It seems I need Glue tools or to use Resolve to do the transcode.  I tried to bring a clip into Resolve 11.3.1 but it wouldn't even show me the clips.  I could see the folder but clicking on it shows nothing.  I can't upgrade the Resolve due to Mac OS limits.  I'm going to take the media home to my Resolve 15 beta system and see if it works there.
Some googling by my AE suggested Glue Tools ama plugin which seems to be 500 bucks or to use Resolve.  His search suggested Resolve 12 or higher.  I'm surprised I don't even see the mxf clips show up in Resolve 11.3.1 but given what my AE found perhaps that is par for the course.
Of course the shoot the day before was to prores and worked fine so today they shoot in a completely different format.  WTF?

Any suggestions welcomed.  Time to go borrow Bob Zelin's tool for fixing these situations!!!  A nice pump action tweaker is in order here.

[Avid-L2] Bins don't stick when placed on 2nd monitor Avid 8_9_4?

Mac Pro mid 2010 upgraded to 12 Core 3.33 GHz 24GB ram.  OS 10.10.5 Avid 8_9_4.  I've been running this setup for a few months on this version level.  I don't know how I missed it but I just noticed that if I create a bin and position it on the second right monitor where the timeline lives when I close the bin it reopens on the left monitor.  I trashed MC state and tried a different user.

I have found that if I move the project window to the 2nd right monitor then the bin will reopen in the second monitor.  It appears that  Avid will only reopen a bin in the same monitor as the project window.  I haven't tried this on my home system yet but I'm surprised I didn't notice this in the last few months.  On my 4K projects I probably haven't had need to position a bin in the right monitor so maybe that's why I haven't noticed this before.  Nothing has changed on the system other than an update to the media info app through the apple store which I did this morning.

I have the OS setup so the Apple menu bar only appears on the left monitor and not the config where there are two menu bars and the one the cursor is on will highlight that menu bar.  I forget what that setting is but I think it had to do with treating each monitor as it's own workspace or something like that.

Is this a known but?  I know in the past there have been incidents where bins open tiny in the upper left or the position changes didn't stick but I haven't had this inability to open a bin in the right monitor before.  Have I just been lucky to have not stumbled on to this until now?

Re: [Avid-L2] Pausing Import - FEATURE REQUEST

I've done a lot of background transcoding on my 4K work.  It frees up the Avid but there was a bug when baking in LUTs that I'm not sure got fixed.  If I would back in a panny Vlog to the transcode files it would create messed up media with whacky scaling and hash etc...  If I didn't bake in the LUT the transcode not only went faster but it wasn't corrupt.  Avid knew about this a year or more ago and it may well have been fixed but I stopped baking in the LUTs because I had to strip them off later for ancillary deliverables.

It might have only been with Panny AVC Intra VLog but if you are going to background transcode do a test first to make sure it works.

Re: [Avid-L2] Can we educate the viewers about quality?

Too bad many of the younger viewers are watching on phones and iPads, or if we're lucky a laptop.  I remember the discussion at an Editor's Lounge where the topic became about big sound for a small screen.  The feeling was if the sound was big then the image size wouldn't be as much a factor in viewer enjoyment.  So if you show goes to 11 it will still rock on an iPhone etc...

I am just trying to educate the viewers. If they start to discern the difference between good and bad quality sound and picture, they will hopefully vote more with their pocketbooks and keep us all gainfully employed.

Those of us who work in broadcast and film tend to forget that the vast majority of people editing don't necessarily have the luxury of sending things out to be mixed.  Nothing wrong with Avid and other NLE's including the tools to do a better audio mix yourself.  Unfortunately, they can't realistically train everyone to use them.

Wouldn't an import in background feature be even better (similar to Background Render)?

Link to Media, then background transcode... That may help you.

I get revisions of features multiple times during a project. And nothing pisses me off more than when I'm in the middle of an hour+ long import and a producer walks in making me cancel the import so they can see something then I have to restart the import all over again.

Can we get a Pause Import / Resume Import option? That'd be great.
