Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Windows 7

Sure it is, for over 6mo. now on PC(both FC and Eth.), and more recently(dec.2009) on Mac too(Eth only). File level sharing over fiber coming soon on Mac(probably NAB).

It's called ver.4 and offers both volume and file level sharing.

My understanding is project sharing is not supported on a mac with Terrablock. Been using a terrablock with macs for many years. At least 4 maybe more.

I don't think the result (or the time it takes) will be any different from
doing a video mixdown (or a submaster for that matter).

Either way, you will be forced to render when exporting and this render will
be performing a transcode into an SD codec.

[Avid-L2] Re: QT Ref comes out HD

Hi,

You can fool the Avid into creating an SD Quicktime by cutting a blank SD title across the top V track. Just make a title without text, add a track and cutt it across for the length of the sequence. Then export a QT as avid source (usually takes less than real time). This will export an SD quicktime without having to transcode, but as it is Avid codec, will need to be converted to something more generally friendly for distribution. I use Quicktime Pro to do that on another computer with the Avid codecs loaded, so I can get on with other work on the Avid.

I agree:

Since we've upgraded to Symphony DX, I'm once again in love with Avid
editing. It's better than it ever was, even better than the old
reliable Meridien systems.

Re: [Avid-L2] Interplay and moving projects in and out

We routinely move long-form programmes by copy and pasting entire
mediafile folders into Interplay. Relinking is pretty instant from
either bins or AAFs. Needless to say OMF mediafiles are to be avoided
if possible on interplay.

The connection of external drives to allow consolidation is IMHO more
troublesome. Local Media indexer problems are often alliviated where
multiple disks have been are indexed by stopping the local MI service
and clearing the .cache files from the MI folder in programme files.
These seemnto buld up and cause sluggishness. You'll have to reconnect
to the HAG or whetever MI you are on afterwards.

Cheers

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: QT Ref comes out HD

Well the sequence is 95% SD but what you are saying is the QT ref file
defaults to the greater res size as it does when you mix 720x480 with
720 x 486. Looks like its qt exports.

I know it's just a demo but they played RED footage as a four stream 4K four-window multicam sequence plus a separate demo of realtime 4K keying - they was pretty impressive. Was the video playback smoother in person than in these videos?

[Avid-L2] Re: QT Ref comes out HD

I'm with Dave on this...

HDV is LongGOP, which cannot be exported via QTref without Transcoding or doing a Video Mixdown.

How did you capture the HDV footage? Over FireWire or Component, SDI or other? Did you capture it at DNx145?

Also, you could've left the sequence in 30i and just captured the HD footage in as DV25 or whatever. There was no need to switch to HD in the first place if you were wanting to stay SD.

But, at this point in time - just do a Video Mixdown at DV25 and do your QTref from that.

I agree. Video Mixdown has cured many QuickTime export problems for me.
For example, when a show has a mix of 480-line DV and 486-line JFIF media.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Limiting "Avid MediaFile" Folder Creation

One note... An error condition I routinely get from making the locked AVID MediaFies and OMFI MediaFiles folder involves errors in the following conditions:

Generating OMF or AAF files (system fails on the export and is cryptic about it.)

Rendering AudioSuite files.

Long, complex renders with many audio/video effects.

The above are the situations where no matter what drive our media creation settings are pointing to, no matter what drive we point to on the renders, the AVID decides it would best go to the Local HD. (are you listening, AVID??) This failed behavior is almost as old as Bob...

I used to do the locked folder solution, but now I find it easier to check my other drives at the end of the day and consolidate the media back to my Media drive. (requires relinking, though, for those faint of heart.)

But, if you have one that Avid can't write to, you'll get an error message. The actual error message it spits is a bit cryptic, but hopefully it'll just serve to you and any editors using your system that they need to double-check the location they are rendering/importing /capturing to and adjust to the correct location.

So in fact "...they just implemented **Multi-user Write** for MacOS,

That makes a little more sense then.

Re: [Avid-L2] Interplay and moving projects in and out

I concur with the last bit - do not mess directly with the MedaFile folders
(a pissed off Indexer is never a good thing). You'd need to resync the
workspaces if you did that - avoid by consolidating, as suggested.

Re: [Avid-L2] Windows 7

Facilis won't run write-sharing over fibre on a mac. We're all mac
these days, and have been running terrablock for something like 6
years- all fibre. Just not all writing to the same drive. Read, no
problem.

I cant say enough good things about facilis terrablock. Mac
symphony? I use it every day, but the PC symphony is faster.
