Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Sorenson watch folder issues.

I think I got it. Good sync which I use at home to sync my desktop and laptop has a new portable version that can run off a thumb drive. It can be set to move or sync files on a schedule. Set it for every 2 minutes and it should work. I'll try it later on and report back.

That works, but I was trying to do it in less steps. I am trying to do it without having to leave the avid app at all. Sorenson uploads the files to the producers ftp when it's done so if I can get it started without having to touch it, that would be money. I'll figure out how to avoid the extra steps even if it takes me 10 to do it.

What if you export to say the desk top first and once that is complete drag it to the watch folder?

[Avid-L2] Media management workflow

Hello

I work on Media Composer Soft

This I how I manage my media. I'm writing this because I wonder if anyone else has a workflow that's better?

I edit both internal and external drives.
When creating a new project I also go into the MXF folder and create a folder there with a higher number than previous numbers. I also create a text file in the MXF folder where I note what is on what folder like this:
1 - PROJEXT X
2 - PROJECT X Shoot in mall
3 - PROJECT Y
4 - PROJECT Z TRANSCODE DV
etc.

When I am done with the project I then delete the media I wont need to backup. Then I connect my backup drive. I have a folder named X:/AVID BACKUP/MEDIA and a folder named X:/AVID BACKUP/PROJECTS. I then just move the folder containing the media to backup to the MEDIA folder and then the project to the PROJECTS folder.

DONE.

In a perfect world I move the backup to two discs or have them in a raid system.

How do YOU do it?
Do you have a workflow that is better than mine?

Best regards,
Martin

Re: [Avid-L2] versioner question

The versioner is a generic dongle updater.
It contains a database of all dongles entitled to upgrade at the time of its release(assurance, demo, new purchase, etc.).
According to Avid records. Which are often times screwy.

is the versioner.avd file pertinent to a software license or is it mainly

Re: [Avid-L2] Sorenson watch folder issues.

I'm pretty certain that Avid will do an audio mixdown anyway (you get a
coherent audio QT), leaving the video referring to the original media. Doing
it first can't do any harm.

Re: [Avid-L2] Sorenson watch folder issues.

I don't like it either, but I found it to be the only reliable way to get the audio mix right for the QTRef. Once Sorenson is done, I delete the mixdown clips and media.

I was trying to avoid that as well. I don't like mixdowns. Trying to figure out a way to mark in/out export for a total time of 10 seconds, then back to work.

I make the audio mixdown before exporting the QTRef. Select the mixdown track(s), and Use Selected Tracks.

Double nevermind. When I uncheck the mixdown, it's spitting all the audio tracks without levels applied so it's unuseable. If I do the mixdown, it is two files and Sorenson tries to start before the audio is copied and fails. Any way to make watch folders work with reference movies?

Re: [Avid-L2] OT Apple to replace my 2Ghz MacBook, yes?

In general, this works better with internal drives on towers, than laptops.

I would not take this approach on any laptop with only 1 FW port. It
means slower performance, No MOJO, no cameras/decks, conflicts with
external FW media drives, burners, etc...

Plus we have recently seen older Mac OS's fail to boot on newer laptops
due to firmware updates.

More good reasons to invest in a cardbus 34 port.

[Avid-L2] One more HVX900 Q

So now my client is saying they need both PAL and NTSC HD deliverables. I
will probably have them edit in a 23.98 project and finish at 10809 23.98
and version from that. With that in mind, what format is best to shoot the
HVX900 at? 720p, 1080p(60) or 1080pA?

TIA

Also, if I am staying in Avid and not using FW, is there any reason to shoot 24pa instead of just 24?

So if one is shooting with this Panny camera and the finish will be 1080 (i
or p), is there a quality difference if the camera shoots 720p and I blow it
up to 1080 in Teranex vs having the camera shoot 1080? This will be
offlined and onlined in Avid.

I have a client with a Panny 900 that wants to shoot 1080p to this Nanoflash
box. What does this mean with my finishing options? if it records 1080p
23.98 can it add pulldown? Am I locked into a 23.98 finish or can I use
this in a 1080i timeline? What other issues concerns?

Re: [Avid-L2] Sorenson watch folder issues.

Double nevermind. When I uncheck the mixdown, it's spitting all the audio tracks without levels applied so it's unuseable. If I do the mixdown, it is two files and Sorenson tries to start before the audio is copied and fails. Any way to make watch folders work with reference movies?

I spit out lots of review copies daily and don't want to spend the time to export a full file from Avid, I'd like to just mark in, out and keep editing while it compresses in the background.

Thanks,

I'm cutting promos and exporting a QT ref into a folder that is local on my PC. Sorenson is running locally and set to watch. There is about 2 seconds between the ref part of the video and the wav file that follows. I get an error message saying it can't use the qt movie because the audio is missing, then I click ok and get another that says can't use the qt because the video is missing. Click ok and now both files are in the failed source folder.

Is there a trick to get sorenson to not move so fast?

[Avid-L2] Was: 2D is good for me -- Now: L-2 settings question

Can anyone explain to me how my screen name for my Yahoo adoptive parents group (KayliesDad) started showing up as a screen name on the L-2? I've made no changes to my settings, it just seems to have started spontaneously. I don't mind being ID'd that way, but I'd like to know what happened.

RE: [Avid-L2] Best Security Practices, where did it go?

Hopefully this link goes through:

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=239659&Hili
te=security+Avid+Security+Guidelines

It used to have an "e-mail me when updated" option, but I don't see it
anymore with the redesign.

I used to be able to find the Best Security Practices guide on the Avid
site which would let you know what Windows updates had been tested as
safe. Can't find it now. Anyone know the link?

Re: [Avid-L2] OT Apple to replace my 2Ghz MacBook, yes?

If you need Tiger to run older versions of eg Avid, it is possible to run it
from an external drive. As far as I know it is possible to run it from boot
camp so do it with an external drive. - OR - Run Avid on a boot camp
partition under Windows.

I've found that my MC 3.5.4 Mac sometimes fails during launch (usually I

think at 'Initializing Macro manager'. I've found tha restarting the Mac

before using MC does the trick. Worth a try?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Adrenaline on a MacPro

Shane replies:

I tried that one...and SRW-5000. I can see the video, and 8 channels of
embedded audio via HD SDI, and I can capture with deck control turned
off. But I can't see the deck. I am connected to the same port that I
use this deck on with the FCP/Kona system. I check AUTO CONFIGURE and it
gets rid of that setting and the deck area is blank. SO CLOSE!
