Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC 3.5.9

Hi Steve,

What is "Fast Scrub"? I'm on a SW-only set-up.
I'm gathering from the "FM" of which I am "R-ing", that it's turning
off effects icons (for HD clips only) and locators from appearing in
the timeline. Is this the case/purpose?

[Avid-L2] Re: BETA SP BVW-70 Head Switching in active video?

Yes I think the servo is locked to the ref when in edit mode. And an assemble isn't a hrad record. It starts off playing back locked to ref then a short insert period (clearing any old footage) and then effectively in hard record but the servo lock has to stay the same through out so the head switching is off. The picture looks right because the sync pulses recorded on the tape (now in the wromg place) force the monitor to display the picture correctly but the switching is visible.
There maybe a menu option (or even a switch) that allows the sync to follow the incoming video. That would sort it or feed the ref from a PAL signal with teh same timing delay. Ideally the AJA unit.

Thanks, Barry! Great idea, I'll definitely do this one. I'm trying to
pre-produce a couple of episodes, because with work and two small
kids, I'm not sure I'll be able to make time for the podcast every
week.

So thanks again and keep the ideas coming!

[Avid-L2] Re: MC 3.5.9

I've been using it for about a week. Seems good so far. Very similar to 3.5.6. Main differences for me are that 16 mm key numbers now count correctly (20 frames per key rather than 40) and audio dissolves play correctly.

My main problem with this build -- and with 3.5.6 -- is the frequency with which audio waveforms update. This is related to Fast Scrub (in timeline preferences). If you have Fast Scrub turned on, and like to look at waveforms when you cut, you're going to be in for a lot of waiting.

[Avid-L2] Re: split edit - L cut

It definitely still exists and I use it regularly when assembling a first cut.

It's option-overwrite (option+red edit). It works exactly as you say: the track you select on the record side is overwritten starting at your mark. All other tracks that are selected on the source side are overwritten at the end of the sequence.

It may seem more complicated on paper than it actually is. In practice, I find it very intuitive when building a sequence, and simpler than using an audio mark. Depending on which track you select, it creates an audio or video prelap.

[Avid-L2] Re: Gotta love Tektronix

Gee I hadn't thought of it that way at all, but your right. Funny cause I'm now onlining a Sex Rehab show. I was thinking how my daughter never wants to do anything she's told so maybe an "Enhancement Request" would work. Something like, "If you do your chores it will Enhance your chances of getting to do something fun." Oh well and the puppy won't wake me up at 6:00 am to go to the dog park. Well I can dream can't I.

[Avid-L2] Gotta love Tektronix

Dealing with Tektronix tech support is a pleasure.  I asked for what we commonly refer to as a "Feature Request" and was informed when they went to put in the request it was already on their list and my name would be added as a requester.  Here's the kicker, Tek doesn't call them feature request they call them "Enhancement Requests"  Don't know why but I like that.  I know they aren't cheap but they are a great company with a strong product.  I wonder if I can try "Enhancement Request" on my daughter, hmmmmm  ;-)

I hear you Oliver... I get that.
I just wish Avid would put up a bigger (more noticeable?) fight...
Web videos? Not a crazy thought, considering they are a media creation
company.
I trained some guys on Avid that were doing wonderful, slick pieces
for DigiDesign, so why not for MC, Symphony and DS as well?

[Avid-L2] Consolidation Quandry?

So I get a sequence from the AEs that has been decomposed and recaptured at 1to1.  The media is spread out over several volumes on the San.  I create a volume to consolidate to.  First I relink the new episode to the media from previous episodes so I can maintain my unique clip names for merging color correction.  This works fine I then consolidate those clips to my new volume.  After I've repeated the process for all the previous episodes I then mount the other volumes to gain access to the new media required for the episode.  I then consolidate to the new volume I created which has the reused media from previous episodes already consolidated to it.  When I consolidate the rest of the media I check the option to skip media already on the target drive.  What I'm finding after consolidating this last time I end up with a lot of duplicate clips matching the ones I already consolidated from previous episode.  The AEs are using the commit multicam
before decomposing to there are no group clips in the way.  I understand why I might get duplicates if there was more media to the clip but most of the dup clips are the same exact duration.  Could the fact that I slightly modify the clip names in the previous episodes account for this?  It's my understanding that cosolidation just like relink is based on tape and timecode not clip name.  Any thoughts about this unexpected behavior?

Get over it ;-) It's called marketing and Apple is a master at it. Nearly every FCP innovation is in reality a copy (or often a refinement) of something development by others.

Media Composer multicam / FCP multicam
Media Composer color correction / FCP color correction
Avid offline editing resolutions / FCP Offline RT
Avid DNxHD / Apple ProRes 422
Avid TimeWarp / FCP7 Speed Tools
Avid Unity / Apple Xsan

Re: [Avid-L2] [Blatant PR] Avid Screencast

Thanks for the link, Ben! I need any promotion I can get :)

I actually think Avid has a lot of video on their site, it's just a matter
of accessibility, I guess. For example, how do I quickly get to the product
information page of MC from the avid.com website? I used the search, because
all the other links just seemed confusing.

There's a nice site http://www.avid.com/mediacomposer4/ that has video and
everything a product site should have, but using the search on avid.com I
get to http://www.avid.com/products/Media-Composer-Software/index.asp

Maybe it's just me, but Avid has some great microsites, it's just a pain to
get to them (or I'm just too stupid).

Anyway, that's why I liked the idea of a podcast -- something that people
are used to and that is easily accessible via iTunes.

I agree:

Yes, the scanner's tach phase (its position in relation to the signal)
is controlled by the reference. If the External Reference is selected,
the scanner's position may not match the video being recorded. The
"Auto" setting allows the scanner to align to the incoming video during
record and align with the external reference during playback. It
should pretty much always be set to "Auto", unless you have no external
reference available.

[Avid-L2] [Blatant PR] Avid Screencast

Hi,

I always wondered why there are billions of FCP tutorial podcasts and
not a single one for Avid (maybe no one gives a crap, I'll find out
soon enough). Sure, there are the user tutorials on Avid's community
site, but I just wanted to search the iTunes store and find something
that just delivered a new episode every week.

So this never materialized. And I thought, I might be able do a
podcast like this. So after sitting on the domain for two years or so,
I finally started a podcast. It's available at
http://www.avidscreencast.com (or on the iTunes Store, of course).

If you have a couple of minutes, check it out and tell me what you
think. This week, it's shiny reflections, next week will be toggling
timeline views with your keyboard.

I will, of course, steal any tip from this list, make no mistake about
it (like the field dominance change trick from Bouke), because I'm way
too limited to come up with stuff myself! I'll always credit you,
though. (No! No money! It's all for the fame!)

Anyway, sorry for blathering on like this, (seriously, I haven't even
had a beer).

Did I mention that when you subscribe, the podcast fairy will grant you a wish?

Have a nice weekend (if you have one),
Christian

[Avid-L2] Re: BETA SP BVW-70 Head Switching in active video? Now Auto vs Ext Ref Switch

So everyone was correct there is sync on the Y channel coming out of the Black Magic mini SDI to component and audio deembedder. This explains why the tape had a proper vertical reference. The deck was set to external sync not auto. The switch is located on the back of the machine by the Ref input. When coming straight out of the Avid the signal was within the window of tolerance for input. Coming out of the record digibeta the SDI output was delayed too much by processing time etc... to input correctly with the BVW-70 set to ext. Switching it to auto allows both signal paths to work. Clearly when set to external something related to the head switching pulses is derived from the ext sync input not the incoming video.

I thought the noise factory disc that came with my upgrade from 2.7 to 3.0 was a trial version. Or so it says on the disk. Did this change with 3.5 to a real version or did I miss something in my 3.0 upgrade?

RE: [Avid-L2] DNX 220X HD and ADRENALINE

Blue mode is the real time playback using HW. It used to be "all green" lower left hand corner of the timeline. Green, yellow/green, yellow for full resolution, half resolution and quarter resolution. In blue mode everything on the timline needs to have been rendered.

Hi Chris,

Adrenaline should not have any problem playing back the DNxHD 200X you digitized. The codec change in 4.0 should not affect any hardware playback (and there were no changes from 3.x to 3.5.4 to cause this problem). However, the CRC error you are getting may very well point to some kind of storage corruption. Each frame digitized by hardware contains a CRC and during playback on hardware that CRC is recalculated and compared to what is stored in the frame and if they don't match you'll get this error.

Maybe I missed something along the way but I was pretty shocked to find out that our 3.X Adrenaline HD could not play DNX220 X out to tape via digital cut. Even a crash record gave our Panasonic 1400 fits. The Adrenaline did somehow digitize this material.

So thought I would move the project over to our Symphony Nitris DX 3.5
Getting an error on playback. "Codec fatal decode MSG: Card2:Decode: Pipe 2CRC error" One of those errors over a black program monitor screen.

Wondering what is going on. I know there was a slight change to the DNX codecs from 3.x to 3.5.x. But I thought they would at least be forwards compatible .
