AFAIK, the only thing is import / export of old formats. And Quicktime sucks big time in that department anyways, so that should be done outside avid already.
(H264 export makes huge ugly files, import / transcode to an editing codec is dog slow. SAS export and AMA copy/transcode are outside QuickTime afaik, and you've seen what that can do.)
And it makes no sense to have HQ transcoding to end formats inside Avid IMHO.
No, not another deal with Squeeze of something incomprehensible please, but something as a frame server (like Adobe has) where the export goes to a pipe (a virtual output other apps can use as input) would be nice.
(If you are on PC, you could have noticed that it is perfectly possible to run MC without Qt installed.)
Now, the fun part is, I never ever have noticed a major (office) application run faster after being promoted to 64 bit.
Except perhaps gaming, I don't see the need for the vast majority of apps to be forced to be 64 bit.
The only reason I see is that it will be cheaper for Apple and will make for better control to shake money from third parties.
Considering you can run emulators to run Windows, Linux and even Amiga, how hard can it be to make a 32 bit Mac emulator for Mac?
I dont think Microsoft would get away with this. Mac users seem to be either fanboys that eat anything or totally clueless.
(not even thinking about ducking.)

Hi Bouke,
It may be that Avid has already replaced all their old QuickTime dependencies, in which case the necessary updates are already in place and they're already prepared for this future Mac OS update - but I can't find any info that confirms this is the case.
The most recent info I could find about Avid and QuickTime was the statement that Avid posted in October about the Windows version, where they said:
"We have been working on a solution and plan on releasing updates to eliminate the dependencies on QuickTime libraries."
That's the 'update' I was talking about. Maybe it's already done. Maybe that statement had no relevance for the Mac version of Avid, I don't know.
And thank you for the correction about VLC, I'm sure you're right!
Cheers,
D.

Hi David,
I've missed the part where Avid needs to update. Write 64 bit stuff I can understand (but I have no clue how complicated / easy that would be).
But since ProRes is already native, how hard can it be?
For VLC, I think it's more LibAV than FFmpeg, but that is nitpicking.

Bouke,
I just meant Avid needs updated to use it's OWN code libraries for codecs, instead of QuickTime's. Adobe has already done this with their apps, and Avid have stated they are in the process of doing so. It's hardly a controversial point.
And yes, VLC will continue to be able to play all these videos happily on Mac OS, thanks to ffmpeg. Not sure how that matters to Avid editors though.

"there isn't really such a thing as a 32-bit file"
At least someone has some sense.
The codec doesn't need updated, it's the software (i.e. Avid) that needs updated.
why i..e. Avid? I would say Apple is cheap and arrogant / lazy.
Avid gives out licenses for the codecs. I'm afraid it is a stand off where both AVID and Apple want to see money for the codecs to be included in FCPX.
And some stupid nitwits over at the COW now call DNxXX 'obsolete' just because Apple puts its nose in the air.
And WHO CARES WHAT QTX CANNOT PLAY IF THERE IS VLC AS A FIX? (the rhymes come free.)
Now, again (and this won't be the last time.)
Quicktime is NOT dead.
The only thing that will be killed is QTplayer 7 (and lower) for Mac on newer Mac OS's
This means nothing for the .mov format. (But I fear that a lot of the original specs / possibilities with the format will not be supported anymore, and IMHO that is a shame. But I grasp the logic, Apple is a poor company that has to keep waling on its toes in order to survive in this killing business where it feels the steamy hot breath of Avid and Adobe in its neck.)
