Re: [Avid-L2] External boot drive and 2020.12 issues

A bit of research has shown that the OS update of 10.14.6 had a big graphics driver update.  I am leaning towards that being the issue.

Will have to check the drive formatting.  It sure feels like a graphics driver issue.  I wonder if that is an OS issue as well.

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Files-  The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes.  Check back often for changes.

Photos -  Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain.  Photos will be posted after moderator approval.  Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Re: [Avid-L2] Adobe Media Encoder V 12.1.2 won't launch?

I've had 2018 and 2019 installed and working until this recent error.  I googled and they said uninstall and reinstall but the 2018 is no longer available even at the older version section.  I realize they did the big purge in lat 2017 or early 2018 due to Dolby License issues or some such thing.  But I thought from then on the versions would still be accessible.  I now realize Adobe can burn you in more than one way.  One requiring OS upgrades for latest versions of software and now two removing access to older versions.  Now it seems the error is in error because I clearly have a valid subscription or 20109 wouldn't work.  I tried the start up reset shift+Opt+Cmd but that didn't fix it so then I uninstalled to try a reinstall as was suggested in the Google but then the v 12.1.2 is no longer available.

I try not to loathe everything that is human but some days that's more difficult.  ;-)

You may be able to research the details, but 2018 & 2019 don't mix on the same machine; for our macs that were getting upgraded to 2019, the engineers had to uninstall any previous versions.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Adobe Media Encoder V 12.1.2 won't launch?

I've been running the oldest Adobe Media Encoder I could get when I finally went from CS 6 to Adobe Creative Suite a couple years back.  Today it tells me I can't open Media Encoder v 12.1.2 because the grace period has expired.  I can however open ver. 13.1, which I also had already installed.  I know they dropped access to older app versions due to a dolby license or some such thing which is why I can't get a version of Adobe Media Encoder that would still support QT Ref files.  At work I've had an older version that still supported QT Ref Files with a current Adobe Creative Cloud Subscription.

Am I missing something?  Why can't I still launch the AME from 2018 that I installed when I first purchased my Creative Cloud Subscription but can launch AME from 2019?  How am I supposed to access my presets that live in AME 2018?  The error says the grace period is up and I need to purchase a subscription but I have a current subscription otherwise AME 2019 wouldn't work.

I thought once the stopped allowing access to the older versions all the newer ones would continue to be usable at least with the appropriate OS version.  Has Adobe decided you can't run any version older than approximately two years?  This makes no sense as some people have to stay at a certain OS level for infrastructure needs.

Is this just a fluke I'm experiencing?

I used the code INSIDER5 a few days ago with Videoguys and got 5% off the $385.00 perpetual license renewal.  For multiple licenses it was a better deal than the Avid store $50 off promo.

The best deal was with Videoguys Black Friday sale when they sold perpetual renewals for $308.  Kicking myself daily for missing that one.

If you're on a Mac, you should be able to find them in

(user)>Documents>Adobe>Adobe Media Encoder>(version)>Presets>

They're in .epr format, you might be able to copy them from the old folder to the new version's Presets folder. Or launch the new version and do Import Presets, then navigate to the preset's location and import from there.

I'm sure the path is something similar if you're on a PC.

That's the price I saw too.  I'm just trying to make sure I'm not missing a deal.  At that price the 15% off Avid deal is probably cheaper.  Last year VideoGuys was a 100 bucks cheaper and it was a no brainer.  Avid has always had a 30 day grace period for renewal unless that has changed.

When I checked yesterday it was $385 for the perpetual renewal.  My license expires today and I'm torn as I don't want to give it up, but I've been working on Premiere for the last year and a half for work and can't imagine we'll go to Avid any time soon.  ANd with things the way the are $400 in my pocket is a good thing.

Re: [Avid-L2] Questions about subscription licenses for Avid

It's priced per year. There's no discount for continuance. Same as there's no discount for continuing a cable TV, Netflix, Hulu, phone plan subscription, etc.

Though, Avid does run some specials at times so you might get a discount on renewal that way. There's one on now for 15% off through tomorrow.

It should be the same price.
It's not mentioned anywhere that it will be less.
But it says: Trade your Perpetual license for an Ultimate Subscription and SAVE 40% off standard price for the first year.

If you get a new subscription you can use 2018.9 or higher as that is the version were we changed the licensing and 3rd party so it would need to be that or higher.  If you wish to use MC in a NEXIS environment, you need Ultimate for bin sharing etc.

Hope that helps and Ho Ho Ho

All my licenses that we've been using for years have been perpetual. I've never had one of the newer subscription licenses from Avid, so I have a question that I can't figure out how to locate the answer to. I'm probably just not figuring out the correct terms to focus my search, but anyway….

If I get a brand new subscription license can I run older versions of MC? And how far back will that work? What is the oldest version of MC that will work in an ISIS/Nexis environment will a new subscription license run?

Also, to work in a ISIS/Nexis environment I will need an MC/Ultimate license, correct?

Thank you very much.

Re: [Avid-L2] Questions about subscription licenses for Avid

I have a follow up question about the subscription licenses.  A 1y subscription to Ultimate is ~$500.  At the end of the year if I want to continue that subscription is it ~$500 to continue for another year or is it less?

Thank you,
Jay
