[Avid-L2] Symantec Endpoint Protection v. 12.1

Hi Everyone -

We have to reload antivirus software on our Avid workstations due to our IT department mistakenly pushing out a new antivirus application not certified by Avid to a couple of our workstations a while ago without my knowledge.  The old software is no longer available.

According to the Avid Security Guidelines, Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 is certified to work with Media Composer, but it appears a new version 12.1 is only available through our software provider.

Is anyone using version 12.1?  Have you experienced problems with it?  I would think a .1 version is more of a patch then anything else, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Re: [Avid-L2] 4k to simulate 2 cam int

Before we conform, the project is in MC 8.5. We happened to offline everything at DNxHD 175. Transcoded all footage. When we lock, we'll make a QT ref video, export an AAF,  and then use Resolve (most likely) to bring everything in (including 4K scans of 16mm & 8mm, Epic 5K, stills, etc.), again, heading towards a 2K master, with other deliverable formats to follow after that.

We just shot a doc in 5K with the Epic. For the offline we transcoded to HD, and used Resize to punch in for close-ups. Once we're locked, we're then going to do a full conform to create our 2K master, as this is a feature doc. It's during the conform that we'll use the original 5K footage when making the resizes for the close-ups, and we won't have lost a pixel. Beauty ensues.

I'm just wondering what the workflow would be for this technique.   Would I have AMA the interview wide shot and transcode, then AMA it again and use frame flex to zoom in and transcode again? Would I have to transcode the interview twice?

Re: [Avid-L2] 4k to simulate 2 cam int

I haven't spent much quality time in the 4K arena but when ama linking and transcoding you need to be mindful of the preference check boxes in transcoding.  There are ways to bake in the scaling on the transcode media but have Avid remember the original frame size scaling.  If you don't set this correctly when you link back to the camera original all the frame flex repos will be off.  I'm not in front of a v 8 system today so I can't remember the particular steps but figure it out before you do the transcoding if you go that route.

Do a test of a few clips to see if your system is capable of playing 5k material within a 1080 project using DNXHR SQ or HQ.   If not, you may want to transcode to 4K or UHD, which will still give you plenty of resolution to fake a second interview camera.

Re: [Avid-L2] 4k to simulate 2 cam int

We use this technique sometimes, but it's not quite the same as two-camera. The cut-in still looks like a jump, because the lensing and angle are identical. You don't get that almost sub-conscious change of perspective that comes from the longer lens on the close-up, plus the slight change of angle.

If you're not inter-cutting, then, great, but I still prefer the longer lens in the CU. actually, we've taken to shooting 4K on the wide shot and then get 3 sizes!, or at least some reframing. Also, we use it for hand-held hosted interviews/conversations- we'll shoot the interviewer on an over-the-shoulder-ish 4K 2-shot and the interviewee on a single or slightly dirty single. Then punch in on the host as needed- just don't cut from the 2x to the host cu.

Our workflow technique is typically backup camera original to spinning media and LTO, then HD dailies (dnx36) from Resolve with viscode on the edge of the frame- including the file names from the camera which include the original frame size. That way, you know how much you can reframe the shot.

During grade, match back to camera original, and the resize comes through aaf (or xml.)

We tried making close and wide dailies from the same camera master but found that the 'guesstimated' reframe was never quite right- more distracting than the blow-up in offline approval. Not worth assistant time to make double dailies.

YMMV.

If you are working full res in 8.5 you can link (AMA) then transcode to DNX HR leaving the footage at its original 5K size within a 1080 project.  Frame Flex will default to scaling it to fit a 1080 raster, but you can change that in source settings or in the timeline to push in as needed.   Easy.
