Jeff

Better start planning for Avid-L 3. On Google Wave. It could be a self-
creating Wiki/blog/comment stream/Twitter fest!

An interesting question- in theory an email comes back to the list for any comments on the blog- this has not happened yet, and I just did a test to see what will happen.

It might not make it back here, as only subscribers can post to the list- and the from email address of the Blog would need to be added as an L2 subscriber.

Jeff,

So how do the two reconcile to each other? For instance, do comments posted on the blog appear back on the Yahoo page or in the Digest or Direct mail?

[Avid-L2] Re: help - timeline disappeared!

Thanks everybody for excellent suggestions. After a long, torturous day I finally got to examine the options and tried the easiest first. Default Set Up worked! All I lost was my beautiful color scheme. Thanks again, I really appreciate the L2.

[Avid-L2] DIG VDM Overrun nitris xw8400 rtr storage v3.54

We intermittently get these errors and we've done all the things suggested.
Most seem to say it's a drives issue but we have pretty much eliminated
that. It also happened intermittently, but often one clip will prove very
difficult to capture. Tempted to think it's in some way content related.
Mostly happens with batch capture.

Change cables, terminators, Correct firmware, correct drivers. Also I ran
HDSpeed drive tester and it does say 400Mb which is easily enough to
digitize one stream in 1:1 HD We have 2 RTR chassis striped together on
separate scsi chains for each chassis. So exactly as it's supposed to be.

We didn't get this when we were on xp with v3x now we are on 3.54 with
vista, although that's not necessarily significant.

Anyone else have this, is it a version thing or any other explanation or
ideas?

Thanks

Nige

Re: [Avid-L2] Matching to non promoted Motion effect SNDX 3.5.4 on Mac OS 10.5.6?

Are you trying to match back to the Motion Effect or the original source
frame? I've never had any problem with this. I have Match Frame on a
function key on the Kbd. Hit once - Motion Effect is loaded into source
monitor. Focus goes to source monitor. Hit key again and the source frame is
loaded. Or al I missing something. Can't try on your exact version but this
works on MC 4.0.2 Mac (10.5.8), MC 3.1.3 Win and Xpress Pro 5.8 Mac
(10.4.11).

[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Encore Video Sync problem

Typically mixdowns are done to force the editor to actually render everything- and if you're creating Windows Media, it eliminates the bug of filler black not being "real", and video sliding left to eliminate "open" spaces.

If you aren't fully rendered- a QT ref into a compression system can create failures of file localization. The system can't get every piece, and fails.

Mixdowns cure this.

As to the original posting- check the colors setting. I've seen codecs where Millions + is available (alpha channel) when set to millions + instead of Millions, the clip won't stay in sync due to extra junk in the encode, despite it not being visible.

The Yahoo RSS feed's performance for the L2 has been dismal at best. Late posts, only about 20% message arrival rates, it's horrid. The direct mail feed goes to the Avid L2 blog, then the blog RSS feeds out to the L2 Facebook page.

extra servers involved, but the message relay looks pretty damn perfect!

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Encore Video Sync problem

I'll give it a try, but I really think the problem is a setting in
Encore, and not in the reference file.

I can pull the reference file - or the compressed MPEG2 file, into
Premier and it's fine. If I pull the MPEG2 files into Encore - nope.

As I mentioned before, this workflow works fine with Reel DVD.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Encore Video Sync problem

Ian's right. His post reminded me of something. I work at a place with
a Unity and despite the fact that the compression system is on the
Unity, they still like to do video and audio mixdowns to prevent these
kinds of errors. Try doing a video and audio mixdown and do the QT ref
from that OR, as Ian suggests, do a "same as source" video export.
It'll be pretty fast and it may solve your problem.

[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Encore Video Sync problem

I've been doing Blu-rays lately in Encore CS4 and haven't hit any sync issues. This includes a 90 minute feature film. I've used both QT refs and encoded files and both worked.

The trouble with Encore is that it doesn't hold any of the encodes done by the app, unlike DVD SP. So once you are done, close the app and later return to it, all the encodes have to be done again, because they were only temp files. If you import encoded files as assets, then it's fine.

I'm currently encoding these files using Adobe Media Encoder (available standalone in CS4). I generate HD MPEG2 files and AC3 there and then import these into Encore.

I wouldn't do anything from a ref file if I could avoide it. Have not
used the App, but bake the sucker in and try again. Compressor used to
have same problem, not in that side of company now, ref files may now
be fine.

[Avid-L2] Re: Matching to non promoted Motion effect SNDX 3.5.4 on Mac OS 10.5.6?

No that is not working on my 3.5.4 Mac SNDX. Tried the alt/option singular key with matchframe on record and timeline toolbar and all a get is try opening the bin containing the clip dialogue box. Like I said it was ctrl/alt plus matchframe on pc (two keys and a click on the matchframe under record monitor). Am I missing something here? I tried the alt/option button on the left and right side of the keyboard.

Adding... make sure you're clicking on the Match Frame button on the
timeline toolbar or under the record monitor. I've seen people click
on the one under the source monitor and that's not going to work for
you when trying to match back from the timeline.

Alt/Opt with Match frame from the timeline should load the motion
effect clip in the source window

I know on a pc I was able to match to a non promoted motion effect by hitting Ctrl/alt and matchframe (or some such combo).  I can't seem to find the magic key combo on a mac.  Anybody know?  I can always promote the motion effect and get a match but that's cheating isn't it?

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Encore Video Sync problem

I've been told not to allow Encore to do the encoding, so I do it in
Squeeze.

Reel DVD is not doing any encoding either.

Clips appear to be the same length on the Encore time line, but if you
play them in preview, the video goes to black about 3/4 of the way down
the time line - and the sync goes off more and more through out the time
line.

Have done a work around by taking the files into Premier, and running
them through Premier's compressor. Then they seem to work, but that's a
PITA when working with Avid, so I normally just to back to Reel DVD.

Found lots of mentions on line about sync driving 2 or 3 frames, but
never 2 or 3 minutes.

Thanks!
Mark

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Encore Video Sync problem

That doesn't sound right. I've never had that happen before. Are the
lengths of the files of audio and video different before they come in
to Encore?

Maybe the issue is Squeeze? Have you tried a different MPEG2 encoder
or a different setting? Do the exact encoded files that don't work on
Encore work in Reel? Or is Reel encoding them itself?

[Avid-L2] OT: Encore Video Sync problem

I'm hoping someone on this list has run into this, because it's driving
me nuts, and I can't find a solution anywhere on the web.

We recently switched to CS3 (had it for a while) to do our DVD
authoring. We used Sonic's Reel DVD before.

After encoding the audio and video from a reference file in Sorensen, I
pull it into Encore, and the video appears to run about 30% faster than
the audio. By the end of a 21 minute program, the sync is of several
minutes.

Has anyone run into this, and what did you do? I've been playing with
compression settings, and project settings but haven't found a way to
solve this. Usually I end up just going back to Reel DVD.

Thanks
Mark

[Avid-L2] Re:So you young whippersnappers might know where we're coming from...

Sounds like the JVC or one of those hacked 3/4s that had a time code head added. Not to forget the BVU-200s where the tension arm was between the TC head and the video drum head. Depending on the tension you could drift quite a few frames even with a lock to time code track. At UCLA I edited my entire Super 8 project on 3/4 and did all the looping on 3/4. Then I sat with a VO-2860 and matched every cut using the pause button. Ended up cutting the dialogue track in video and dubbed it to Mag film. I was one of few students to do sync sound on super 8 without a nagra or a sound super 8 camera. Fot the 15 minutes the sync held up given everything was looped it was watchable. Now my script that's another story.

[Avid-L2] Re: apple 24'' minidisplay blues

Well, the most quickly and cost effective solution was to add a second video board inside. Apple did not accept the monitors return, the gefen adapter is not sold yet, the other adapter is on the other side of the world
So we are back 10 years ago when 2 monitors means 2 video boards. Thanks apple!

It's the L2, in blog format, with a few extras to boot. Great for those who use RSS for reading, the blogspot RSS is the Full L2, better then other RSS methods we use.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re:So you young whippersnappers might know where we're coming from...

With the 800 series you could figure out the slippage with clean heads
and compensate to do match frames. If it started slipping it was time to
clean the heads and rollers. For sports with the only TC being the TOD
the record was started you cut by ejecting the tape looking how full the
reels were adding or subtracting from the shotlist and tossing it back
in and hitting FF or Rew for as long as your internal clock said you
should. With a little practise you could go into shuttle within 30" of
the play you needed.

It was always fun trying to build the third or sometimes 4th audio track
with punchins or track swaps on the fly, while flying in wild sound
from reel to reel and or cart. Cart... kinda like an 8 track for you
YWs. Watch American Graffiti you will see them in the Wolfman Jack
scenes. Whatta ya mean who's he????Next you'll be telling me you do not
know who Dr. Demento is.

Dennis, was that an Ampex 350 I saw hiding in the corner of your pic?
