Fun with relinking AMA media after consolidate, no really fun?
So I have successfully taken my sequence mixed with dnx220 and xdcam ex 35Mbits ama clips and consolidated the ama clips with 30 frame handles. For fun I decided to take a copy of the consolidated sequence and see if I could relink back to the original ama clips. Fortunately the unity workspace contained a subfolder in the avidmediafiles/mxf/mycomputer that only contained the xdcam ex clips I consolidated so it was easy to take them offline. I mounted the external drive with the ama'd clips original media. Traditional relinking didn't work, no surprise here as there were no tape names added. I then opened the bin that contains all the ama'd clips in it. With the external drive mounted opening the bin all the original ama clips were online except for one cards worth. This was a known issued and highlighting the offline clips and going under file: link to ama volume created a new bin and also mounted the original clips in the all ama bin. I
then deleted the newly created bin. Now with everything online I place the sequence in the same bin and highlighted everything and relinked to selected items and it worked. One issue I had was in the original ama clips bin all the clips were master clips except one which was a subclip. For some reason when I highlighted everything I got an error. Highlighting everything but the subclip and the relink worked without issue. Not sure what there is about this subclip that is a problem or how it got in the bin as a subclip but I will look into that.
To summarize the offline was done with transcoded clips to 20:1 from the original ama clips bin. Then for online bringing back the original clips bin online and the then opening the sequence bin brought those clips online. The neat thing is that even after a consolidate I was able to relink back to the original ama clips as noted above. No tape names were added by the AE. Maybe I'm just lucky but this was kind of cool and so far I don't see any wrong shots. I'm on sndx mac 4.0.5 but I think in 5.x and later or is it just V6 I would be able to just have the ama clips bin open and the clips highlighted with the sequence in it's own bin and choose relink to selected in all open bins or something like that. I'm not near a later system right now to refresh my memory. Curious if anybody has an idea why the ama subclip causes errors on the relink?

[Avid-L2] Fun with relinking AMA media after consolidate, no really fun?
RE: [Avid-L2] OT: Cloud based client review and asset managemet
I think these might work in different ways which might be significant depending on your set up..
Media silo transcode your files to other formats so they are suitable for ipads/laptops etc etc.. I think interdub just stream what you give them…Interdubs can be more white label. Very difficult to get rid of the Mediasilo branding thought.

We are using Interdubs, which works very nicely.

Since the source material is progressive and your sequence is interlaced,
the effect in question is simply letting you know that this needs to be
accounted for. The motion adapter does that - in your case, it's converting
each frame into two fields.
MC is great at determining field motion from clips that have codecs that
are native to MC. It is TERRIBLE at determining field motion from anything
else.
Great = P2, XDCAM, DVCProHD, DNxHD
Terrible = ProRes, H.264
If you link any of the ones I mentioned in the "terrible" column, you need
to set Field Motion manually. Otherwise, it will call it "Unknown" and the
motion adapters will be off, badly. Amazingly, it thinks ProRes and H.264
movies at 23.976fps are interlaced. I've called Avid out on this and they
have yet to tell me how they're going to fix it. When I'm onlining, I see
this all the time, from editors who don't know or don't care about the
CRITICAL Field Motion column for AMA linked clips.
> As I wrote above the EX clips are shown as 1080P in the video column.

MC makes a guess based on the metadata in the source. As I said before,
when it's native, it's usually right, and when it's not, it calls it
Unknown.

Not true at all. You can have your project in a 30i NTSC format and link to
1080/23.976p stuff just fine. You just have to pay attention to the Field
Motion and Reformat columns before consolidating/transcoding.

Unfortunately no. This is another thing I've called Avid out on. You can
batch change certain column values (like Reformat), but you can't batch
change Field Motion. I have a carpal tunnel that can vouch for this.

Re: [Avid-L2] DNxHD from Sony F3 Camera
the media files will be .mp4...
The specific workflow will vary, but with either XDCAM EX or DNxHD I would
usually AMA link then Consolidate. They are natively supported codecs so
that is just a file copy and rewrap process.

[Avid-L2] Field Motion Parameter When is it set and how?
Field Motion Parameter When is it set and how?
I'm working on a show that has a mixture of 59.94I DNX 220 clips and XDCAM EX 35Mbits (1080p/29.97) clips. Most of the video is interlace so that is my project type. I see the green dots on the EX clips for the auto motion adapter of both fields. I can manually change the field motion on the ex clips to interlace and refresh motion adapters to get rid of the green dot auto motion adapters. Am I being too anal here? I just don't like an effect if I don't have to. As I wrote above the EX clips are shown as 1080P in the video column. When is that determined and by what? These are ama linked clips that have been consolidated. Does the project type when I do the consolidate determine the 1080P or is it derived from metadata in the EX native clips? I was told by the AE that when mounting and linking to the high res ama EX clips I had to have the project in 29.97P format. I assume that means that it would play a role in the ama relinking
process but I don't know for sure. I didn't try to break it yet but any experience or insight would be appreciated. The field motion parameter can be adjusted manually one clip at a time as far as I can tell. Is there a way to batch change a bunch of clips? I'm on mac sndx 4.0.5. TIA

[Avid-L2] Re: Anyone buy a Wacom lately?
I write for Post Magazine as well as being an Assistant Editor. I recently wrote a review of the Wacom Intuos 5 Touch and love it. I can definitely tell that using the stylus puts less strain on my wrist and I feel faster. The quick keys along the side help me tremendously. Grouping by aux tc is a huge pain in the butt without Quick Keys but with the tablet I can program most of my keystrokes into one button.
I'm a convert.

I've been using a A5 Intuos 1 for the past decade almost, started using it when I was diagnosed with a tennis elbow.
I use it in "mouse mode" as it involves less traveling than "pen mode". I use it instead of a mouse, I just edit with it - no fx or drawing.

Are the Avid Community Forums down?
I can't seem get on the Avid forums. I get an error message:
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at community.avid.com.
This happens with my preset pages and trying to get there through avid.com. I'm back at this facility today so I'm trying find out if I might have a firewall issue. I've never seen this before when I worked here but it's been a few months.

[Avid-L2] SNDX 4.0.5 mac AMA to transcode or consolidate that is the question?
SNDX 4.0.5 mac AMA to transcode or consolidate that is the question?
Starting an online where they are linking ama to 35mb xdcam or xdcamex footage. My gut and limited experience tell me to take the ama linked clips and transcode or consolidate for all the avid media goodness. I see there are some non ama clips at dnx 220 and a few SD 2:1. I'm not too worried about the time difference between consolidating and transcoding but I would like to stay native just to see how it works. I know it will require a video mixdown if I want a reference QT but will I have performance issues that will create problems when laying off to tape if I stay native with the xdcamex 35 mbits media? I'm on a mac pro 10.5.8 2x3Ghz Quad Core Xeon with NVidia GeForce 8800 GT. TIA

I don't have a suggestion for a good one, but I haven't been having great experiences with Takeoffvideo, so I'd say you should leave it off the list if you have one.

You can get some pretty good deals on the intuos 4's now. For some reason the only intuos 4 tablet on the wacom site is the extra large. I had to find the intuos 4 on amazon etc... I think the intuos 4 listed at $ 499.00 but you can get them for $299.00 or less. Not cheap but all my other 9x12's were $500.00ish.
