Re: [Avid-L2] MC soft upgrade 2.6 to version 4

If you have a USB dongle that's registered to you (or someone you
know, or not registered) the pre-3.5 upgrade will work.

Can't guarentee that your laptop will work- Its probably not an
'approved' configuration. But media composer
runs great in a LOT of unapproved machines. In the case of macs, at
some point you kind of need an intel box. Can't say if there's a
similar deliniation in PCs.

If you have your old install discs, or a downloaded installer or
whatever, why not download and install the trial version of 4.05? Run
it for a week or two. If it works well, pay the upgrade fee and blast
your dongle. MC 4 is a huge improvement over 2.6.3. Try it- it's a
fully functional time-limited version. If it's not worth $400,
reinstall the old software... You won't.

That's kinda what I thought but knowing Avid unless specifically mentioned I'm wary. Don't want to spend $$ only to find it don't work!!

[Avid-L2] MC soft upgrade 2.6 to version 4

I cant seem to get from the Avid online store if I can update my 2.6.3 system to ver 4 for the $395 listed on the website. It says pre 3.5 & 4 but it look like 2.6.3 has never existed according to the lack of any info there.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Workflow help

Job,
what I didn't make clear in my earlier post is that I'm not planning on using the FCP cut at all.

I'll directly import the Red files and essentially cut from dailies.

When I import the .R3D files through Metafuze, that will give me just he video, correct?

I suppose I'll have to manually sync the audio unless there's a solution I don't know about yet.

Re: [Avid-L2] Anyway to preview MXF files without MC?

Are you storing Avid OP-Atom MXF files, or "raw" XDCAM files?

Sony's Clip Browser software is free. Also, Amberfin offers an MXF
viewer at www.amberfin.com.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Workflow help

90-95% chance that sound was recorded separately from the Red. If so:
- Picture brought into FCP.
- Sound brought into FCP.
- Synced-up in FCP.

If you need access to their cut sequence, you need access to both picture
and sound. You could try to conform their work version using EDL's and/or
Automatic Duck, but there won't be a link between picture and sound, other
than the one in the edit.

I don't know any way to bring synced clips from FCP to Avid or vice versa, I
mean synced clips with the advantages of being able to matchframe etc.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Workflow help

The main film is FCP,
but I the trailer is going to Avid.

Learning about Metafuze minimized the Red issues,
and DS and will allow for 4k if needed.

[Avid-L2] Re: Thanks for having me and here's my first question.

Couldn't agree more. Collapse is much better for later re-creations of the sequence.

Yesterday, I was going to roll a Master and Consolidate a short video sequence of a talking head. It was a chroma key shot so there was background on V1, talking head on V2 and because it was going out 4x3 - a Pan and Scan was on V3.

The editor who had done the cut originally, did a 1 sec Video Mixdown at the head and tail of the sequence so they could fade up/down to Black.

I looked at it and muttered a few choice words and said "Why didn't they just put a Fade To/From Color on the top layer?" I had to fix it before I could Consolidate, because if I were to try and re-create the sequence later as you know, you can't Batch Capture/Import a Mixdown.

FWIW, I have Video Mixdown mapped to SHIFT+Y and Audio Mixdown at SHIFT+U

RE: [Avid-L2] Creating Folders for XDCAM HD

Why would you want to convert them into long gop to edit with them?

If you have to spend the time converting them, then convert them to
DNxHD and you will be happier in the long run, I think.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Creating Folders for XDCAM HD

Hello
I have a rather unorthodox XDCAM HD workflow. I want to exploit the soft
import functionality of AMA in Avid. For that, I have to use XDCAM
formatted folder structures (so that the Avid thinks that it has camera
rushes connected to it). My goal is the take loads of QT files,
transcode them and end up with XDCAM HD 422 50mbit files inside an XDCAM
file structure with, if possible, XML metadata attached using a
software. I have tried XDCAM clip browser, FCP and I get MXF files, but
no structure. Is there a soft out there that emulates a XDCAM machine?
Many thanks

[Avid-L2] Re: Is there an elegant way to locate a pan and zoom still?

Funnily enough Dave Forsythe's latest Avid Tips and Tricks podcast explored pan and zoom and I was hoping for some revelation as to how to automatically link to graphics but, no! You have to point at the file manually. What a shame.

By the way take a look at Christian Förste's http://avidscreencast.com/ tutorials.

I've been editing on Avid for almost 15 years and I still picked up some excellent real world tips and tricks from him.

[Avid-L2] Re: Creating Folders for XDCAM HD

We use XDCAM HD all the time but because our projects always involve more than one XDCAM disk we avoid using AMA.
Our workflow is to rename the XDCAM disk (via Sony PDZ software) to the unique ID all our tapes and disks receive. Then we import each XDCAM disk into the Avid.
Composer maintains a rock solid link from your edited sequence to each of the sources. This is really a fast and no-brainer workflow. We have PDW-U1 drives connected to each of our editing suites.

If you decide to use AMA after all, the initial PDZ renaming is vital to maintain any readable way of retrieving the right XDCAM disk from your library in case of a re-import being necessary (ie to bring an old project online).

[Avid-L2] Re: Creating Folders for XDCAM HD

My goal is not to import these files at all but to exploit AMA to soft import. The files will be compressed using something like Telestream Episode. I get the impression that Avid exports M2v files to an XDCAM recorder and it is the recorder that creates the folder structure.

[Avid-L2] OT: Live music from Wes' house

Some of you long time subscribers to this list might remember back ten or
eleven years ago when my wesplate.com web site had some helpful stuff on it,
and you might even remember that I used to have links to music I liked to
listen to while working. And I even heard from people about how much they
liked my tastes.*

Anyway, I use this prelude as a tie-in to some live music that is happening
at our house tomorrow night. Helios, one of my favorite Ambient/Electronic
artists will be performing and we're going to stream it live on Ustream. So
while you cannot come and listen in person, you can check out this awesome
music from the comfort of your computer.

* I only ever got one complaint from someone who at my recommendation bought
the Beastie Boys' The In Sounds From Way Out and didn't like it. Of course
that person was wrong. ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Workflow help

Thanks for the input.

I think the solution is to stay all Avid,
and when Metafuze was brought to my attention,
I think that should solve all problems.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Avid to host live Web chat with Avatar editorial team on Friday 2-26-10

Hey - It was billed as a "chat", not a webinar with PowerPoint.
(Destined to become a podcast).

It took me a few minutes, then I realized I didn't need my 3D glasses.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Thanks for having me and here's my first question.

Ah, I misread the question before I answered. Terry's basically right,
though there may be a way, similar to the way I just mentioned in my
post, but if you use a certain trackball or mouse - like a Kensington
- you can have a specific button click (like the letter "J" for
example) be typed when you click one of the buttons or a "chord" of
buttons on the trackball, so if you mapped the video mixdown button to
a specific keyboard letter, then mapped the mouse or trackball to
"type" that letter with a specific button on the trackball, you'd have
your solution.

BTW, video mixdowns should REALLY, REALLY, REALLY be used sparingly.
Why do you need to access that button so many times? Maybe you need
Collapse instead?

Re: [Avid-L2] Thanks for having me and here's my first question.

Yes. You can make any menu item into a keystroke or an on-screen
"button."

Go to Settings and choose Keyboard

THen command or control (PC)- 3 to call up the tabs with all of the
controls.

At the bottom of that dialog box are three checkmark boxes, pick the
one called something like "Map Menu command to keyboard."

Then you can drag the buttons from the dialog box to your keyboard.

If you just want them as on-screen buttons, you can drag them from the
buttons in the dialog box right onto the desired button on your
timeline. Though you'd need to switch the "map menu command to
keyboard" check mark off.

My keyboard and UI has been mapped for so long it's been a while since
I've done this, but there is a User Settings article in the Knowledge
Database on this and there it is in the Help command and in the fine
manual AND I have done articles about this and other Avid tips at www.provideocoalition.com
. Check out CUT.N.COLOR.

RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Anyone tried this out?

We use Interdubs. And it has been fantastic. Best of all - Andreas will
crank out just about any feature that you need. He's very good and very
responsive to the customers.

I normally wouldn't push something like this, but I have not had 1
complaint from any clients in over 3 yrs about posted reviews. And his
pricing is competitive.

Just saying.

Hi:

I am one of the cofounders of CreationFlow

I can mention 2 features that distinguish us from other tools you
mentioned:

- You can mark up the video. When you add a comment you can point that
section of the screen are you talking about. You can use a pencil to
draw whatever you want

- Intra-second comments: Comments are made on frames, not seconds. If
you need very precise feedback, this would help a lot.

Regards, Oscar.

RE: [Avid-L2] Thanks for having me and here's my first question.

Why not map it to a key? That will make it even easier than putting it in a
context menu. I have Audio Mixdown mapped to SHIFT-A and it saves me a lot
of time.

Is it possible to move an item like video mixdown from the main menu to the

easier on this project I'm working on.

Thanks
