Re: [Avid-L2] LTO Software

Sorry Greg, I don't know the answers to the stuff about LTFS because I found it too cumbersome and unreliable.  I do know that you can pull the catalog off the last tape of your set in the current version, and I believe in the worst case scenario you can re-scan old tapes to build a catalog.

Also BRU PE will create a "restore" CD or USB stick with a copy of the catalog and the backup software, so you can send to a client who doesn't own the software, and they can restore.  I don't know about a "discovery" mode either.  Tolis group's tech support and sales are quite willing to answer any questions you may have.  I recommend you shoot them an e-mail.

Do networks accept BRU for delivery?  The original poster was looking for recommendations for delivering LTO 5.  I jumped to the conclusion that he was delivering to a discovery network - which is an extremely specific spec.  But what other networks require LTO delivery?

And does BRU allow you to archive to LTFS if you need to? Or is their LTFS read-only?  Does it have a 'Discovery' mode?  I stopped using BRU because I lost my catalog drive.  I understand now that there's a way to recover the index without the catalog (or whatever they call the database).

Have you been able to do that?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: LTO Software

I'll repeat what I have said before.  Best performing I have seen is Tolis BRU PE software, with a standalone LTO 6 drive (I tested the HP) connected via SAS with an ATTO HBA.  Has full verify of every file on the backup.  Creates backups that can be restored on Mac OS, Windows and Linux.  The software to restore backups from tape is free, only need a license for the backup stage.

BRU PE can use LTFS or direct write to tape.  Same price as Pre-Roll Post from Imagine Products.  Pre-Roll Post ONLY works with LTFS iirc.

LTFS is a last resort, as it significantly slows the performance of LTO, and when accessed directly via the Finder will generally lock up and crash your Mac.  I found Pre-Roll Post to be the slowest of the software I tested (BRU PE, Retrospect and Pre-Roll Post).

Your Mileage May Vary,

The other "editor" in me can help but notice that twice in the above release "12/31/15" is mentioned as a deadline date that has been "missed".  My calendar shows there's another chance at it in a little less than 10 months!

Re: [Avid-L2] Crashing during multicam editing on 7.0.3

I used multicam in 7.0x with no issues. In a previous post did you give all the details? If all this has already been answered, then no need to provide the details again for me.

AMA? Transcoded? How many cameras? What DNxHD flavor? What OS? RAM? Crashing on multiple projects or just one? When is the crash happening? How exactly are you using multicam? When is the crash occurring?

And the Steve Hullfish favorite: Did you try a completely clean user setting?
