Responded on the Avid L2 – but here you go via email

None…. They havent finished testing it and have seen some export issues with it.

Not approved yet.

Yes it is coming but I don't know when as UME and export / import functionality is expected to improve with each update.

Thank you, Marianna!

And thank you, Job - I don't know how I could miss that, however, I'm pretty convinced the last time I checked I didn't see it in the settings and we were traveling back to another setup with an older MC installation for the exports.

New: do not take it political on this list - was: [Avid-L2] Western Digital in lawsuit for allegedly sneaking RAID-unfriendly tech into drives for RAID arrays

I did business with MelroseMac and was satisfied with their service.

It's not about either service, it's about how we are surviving this and possibly: the next year within our business. IMHO.

Mariella: anything on macos 10.15.5 for MC yet? (will be a new thread then anyway)

(unpolitically:)
Stay safe, either way, all of you. :-*

Re: [Avid-L2] Western Digital in lawsuit for allegedly sneaking RAID-unfriendly tech into drives for RAID arrays

Glad I asked so my 8TB is CMR but I hadn't noticed it was 5400rpm.  It feels like WD goes out of their way to make the product line with all the colors etc... confusing.  Just like I hate having to constantly google which fricking animal a mac OS number is.  Fortunately I'm just using the drive as a back up for projects and media so It's throughput is okay for that.  I got spoiled just getting Hitachi Deskstars at various sizes.  Now it's time to review the WD product line to see where the 7200 rpm drives are.  All this and they burned down Melrose Mac the other night.

That's not correct. Check their info PDF on WD Red drives for specific information - any EFAX drives above 8 TB and above are CMR.

Re: [Avid-L2] Western Digital in lawsuit for allegedly sneaking RAID-unfriendly tech into drives for RAID arrays

From what I read, it's WD Red drives under 8TB that have SMR. I've always been of the opinion that when buying new hard drives, it's always better to buy in capacities that are 'current tech', as they are current production and haven't been spinning drives sitting idle on a stock shelf for years. When I had to outfit a small personal RAID last year, I opted for WD Red drives in 10 TB, since that was on the lower end of what was then current. In this case, I feel lucky that these drives supposedly are CMR drives, but I also don't think I would be opting for the lower capacity drives anyway, unless I had a RAID that specifically required this capacity. Another thing to note: WD Red drives are 5400 RPM drives - I don't think I would even consider that rotational speed adequate for "production" performance. I bought mine specifically for a low performance, lower noise situation - any time I've outfit spinning disks for a production performance RAID, it's always at least 7200 RPM drives. Not letting WD off the hook here, just sharing some personal practices that have worked out well for me, even if that's mostly just luck.

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar  Various Avid events are in the Calender.  If you have an event you'd like posted,  pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Files-  The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes.  Check back often for changes.

Photos -  Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain.  Photos will be posted after moderator approval.  Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

[Planetary Information Engine] Coronavirus (COVID-19) Live Tracker Update 6/1/2020

View this email in your browser

Planetary Information Engine Update - 6/1/2020
Hello, thanks for signing up for updates from the Planetary Information Engine.

The Planetary Information Engine delivers actionable intelligence (information) to residents of the Earth to aid them in their daily lives. Currently we are devoting a large number of resources to updating the Coronavirus Live Tracking site that I've established in response to the global, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The following figures and items have been updated recently:

Site-wide Updates:
  • This week research progress:
  • The US has entered a "plateau" phase of viral transmission, meaning overall transmission rates are holding steady, rather than seeing major spikes or a decline overall.
  • The death rate and hospitalization rates in the US has shown some steady decline, contrary to transmission rates.
  • Stable transmission rates but decreased hospitalization rates could mean the virus has propagated through the most vulnerable populations and slowly getting into less vulnerable populations in terms of health risks of the virus, but more risk in terms of disease transmission (e.g., high rate of socialization).
  • Outbreak risk modeling continues - new high risk states predicted.
  • News & Transmission History archives expanded.
  • Pre-COVID-19:SARS-CoV-1 - how did the first SARS epidemic unfold in 2002-2003? A new part of the transmission history archives will soon be featured.
  • Vaccine status: 10 vaccines in clinical trials globally, 121 vaccines in preclinical evaluation stage.
  • This letter special notes:
  • Advice on mask wearing and safe practices for business opening
  • Visualizing the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
Mask wearing and safe practices for businesses

As the spread of COVID-19 slows to a plateau in America, we will all be faced with the continued presence of this virus in our daily lives, and therefore should take precautions when venturing outside either to work, dine, or socialize. Here are some graphics that might be of use to those concerned or curious about how wearing a mask decreases the transmission probability of the virus, and highlights some safe practices as businesses re-open.

Reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, Science Magazine

Respiratory infections occur through the transmission of virus-containing droplets (>5 to 10 μm) and aerosols (≤5 μm) exhaled from infected individuals during breathing, speaking, coughing, and sneezing. Traditional respiratory disease control measures are designed to reduce transmission by droplets produced in the sneezes and coughs of infected individuals. However, a large proportion of the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) appears to be occurring through airborne transmission of aerosols produced by asymptomatic individuals during breathing and speaking (1–3). Aerosols can accumulate, remain infectious in indoor air for hours, and be easily inhaled deep into the lungs. For society to resume, measures designed to reduce aerosol transmission must be implemented, including universal masking and regular, widespread testing to identify and isolate infected asymptomatic individuals.

Recommendations from Oregon Health Authority (OHA) for Mask Wearing and Safe Practices During Reopening

Oregon continues to be a leader in coronavirus response and its state-level health department has produced some excellent graphics that make it easy to understand the key points to reducing transmission of the virus outside. This is not a comprehensive list of health requirements (see your own local health authority for comprehensive lists), but general guidelines regarding masks.

Key points to remember:
  • A face covering protects everyone around you.
  • The virus spreads in droplets from coughs, sneezes or talking.
  • Face coverings keep droplets out of the air and make it harder for the virus to spread.

Every state and country has its own recommendations for safe reopening, so please defer to your local health authority in the case of any type of conflict.
----

Visualizing the Novel Coronavirus

The president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has frequently referred to the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) as "the invisible enemy", but the virus itself is hardly invisible. We know from molecular genetic data the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is closely related to the same coronavirus that caused the SARS epidemics of 2002 and 2003. Like all coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2 has earned its namesake for the marked "corona"-like (as in, the Sun's corona) appearance under scanning electron microscopy. But what does that mean? What does it really look like? Here are some images below for those that might be curious.

COVID-19 Special Report (Outbreak Risk Modeling)

Outbreak risk modeling - 6/1/2020

Each quadrant represents a disease risk category. Quadrant 1 means a decreasing social distancing index, but increasing infection rate, which is an indication of high risk for disease resurgence. Quadrant 2 means increasing social distancing index and increasing infection rate, meaning local public health agencies and the local population have already responded to increased transmission by initiating higher social distancing protocols but transmission rates have not yet lowered. Quadrant 3 represents decreasing social distancing index and decreasing infection rates, meaning the majority of these states have likely met the requirements for reopening, and are actively increasing social/physical outdoor activity. Quadrant 4 means increased social distancing, decreasing infection rate, which likely indicates that the region has already recently responded to a resurgence and is currently in a reduced transmission state due to increased social distancing.

Most states are currently either in Quadrant 1 (risk of potential resurgence) or Quadrant 3 (resurgence not currently expected). That being said, its important to remember that the US is currently in a plateau phase, meaning the average number of new daily infections is holding steady at around 20,000 confirmed cases per day. For high risk states (Quadrant 1), they are sorted by % change in cases for the week of 5/24 through 5/31. Keep in mind that just because there is not a projected increase in resurgence based on this data, does not mean that there might still be a resurgence in low-risk states. That being said, high risk states would be expected to encounter a resurgence during the next week to some degree.

These metrics are meant as a guideline to gauge risk within the state, but should not be used as final decision factors in any type of public health intervention. In other words, these are "FYI" and might be useful indicators of risk in those regions, but not a fully fledged predictive model.

Quadrant 1 - High Risk for Disease Resurgence, Increasing Risk (Moderate → High)

Fundraising:
  • Thanks everyone who has contributed thus far. $467 is a good start which is about 19.5% of my $2,400 goal.
  • Please only contribute if you feel like you are financially secure for the next 2 years as some experts expect we may be feeling the social and economic impact of the pandemic for up to 2 years.
  • These funds support the cost of the webserver, email list maintenance, and part of my salary and living costs as an MPH graduate student.
