Not sure if anyone's heard of this, but I've been using a little app for
the iPad for a week or so that lets you make notes on a sequence you're
watching back, without the need to add timecodes, then export your
annotations as locators.
It's called 'Cut Notes'.
I've genuinely found it useful, and not gimmicky at all. You just tell
it your frame rate, starting timecode, then hit play on the Avid and the
iPad, and you're off! When you're done, you email the locator file, and
pop it somewhere that the Avid can see, and that's that.

[Avid-L2] FREE FCP -> Avid Media Composer classes at San Francisco Supermeet!
For anyone who is going to the San Francisco Final Cut Pro User Group Supermeet, I will be presenting three FREE classes on making the transition from FCP to Avid.
Obviously, we're not talking about abandoning FCP for Avid, but being proficient and capable with BOTH. As a long-time Avid AND FCP editor (1992 on Avid, 2001 on FCP), I offer up all of the ways FCP folks can leverage their current editing skills when using Avid Media Composer AND show some of the cool things that are exclusively available in Avid that you may want to take advantage of.
I did a training DVD for Class on Demand - "Avid Media Composer for Final Cut Pro Editors" - and I heard from some experienced former Avid editors who were surprised at some of the cool new features that had been added since they switched to FCP, so the classes should appeal to a lot of folks. It's always good to have a sense of what's possible on Avid and how easily you might be able to take an "Avid" job if it came your way. Bring your toughest "I hate Avid because..." questions. Chances are, I'll have an answer that helps you. If I don't, maybe Avid will hear your plea and fix it! (I dare you to say "Avid is modal.") Seriously, I'm a big fan of FCP and Avid, so you're not going to hear any FCP-bashing from me. This is about finding the right tool and using it correctly. Sometimes that tool is Avid and sometimes it's FCP.
I hope you'll join me for one of the three FREE sessions. (It's really THREE opportunities to sit in on the SAME presentation.)
For those that don't know me, I've co-written two books on Avid editing and two books on color correction. I just finished co-editing a feature which will be released in theaters by Sony/Tristar this September, called "Courageous" which was shot on RED and cut on Final Cut Pro. I also edited for The Oprah Winfrey Show (all Avid) and Bill Kurtis' "Investigative Reports" and "Cold Cases" (all Avid Symphony). My production company - Verascope Pictures - mostly does entertainment marketing - trailers, sizzle reels, TV and radio spots - for clients like Universal Studios, Sony Pictures, NBC TV, PBS Kids, Jim Henson Entertainment and VeggieTales. Man, I'm almost starting to believe the hype myself!

[Avid-L2] HDSLR workflow

Yes, HDSLR footage into MC using MPEG Streamclip and QtChange. I covered it here:
http://tinyurl.com/2bxvdvh (bottom of the article)
I posted the steps on the FCP-L in the "Compressor Q" thread, but here they are again. This covers both my FCP and MC workflows (as of now - always subject to change).
1. Batch convert in MPEG Streamclip to either ProRes (or LT) or Avid DNxHD QT.
2. Place in a folder labelled as a CamRoll number. Use QtChange to add TC.
Assign TC by hour digits. QtChange embeds the folder name as a reel number.
3. Use R-name to taste to append file names.
4a. Import folder of ProRes into FCP.
or
4b. Import DNxHD files into MC. These will "fast import".
The various encoders will all yield slightly different video levels from each
other, but are similar and won't be clipped or crushed. At least not in my
experience. They will APPEAR to have different gamma levels, but this is a
QuickTime player issue. Gamma values will be very close inside FCP, Premiere
Pro, After Effects or Media Composer.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Oliver

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: AVC-Intra Workflow
probably, the performance we get from XDCAM as AMA is fine. With H.264 we
usually need to transcode to ensure reliable media performance.
I prefer the Avid-native media management, but still AMA seems like a
slightly better implementation of edit-in-place workflow than in many other
systems. The NLE builds an index of mounted media when you point it at the
AMA media, so it can relink files reliably without manual intervention. This
behaviour can be a little quirky at times, but overall it seems to work
pretty well.
Our workflow is usually and offline/online one - AMA media (XDCAM and DSLR
usually) is trancoded to offline SD resolution (10:1 or DV25) and then
edited. When the cut is finished the sequence it relinked to the AMA media
to "up res" and then the entire sequence transcoded to a common format for
finishing.
I want to see improvements in AMA, but it's pretty solid.

The problem with idiot proof systems is someone just comes up with a better idiot.
Although, we just recently upgraded from Symphony v3 to v5, and I'm lovin' AMA. (Bring it in, work with it, transcode overnight)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: AVC-Intra Workflow
It is much faster creating the appropriate Avid media files.
I suppose this doesn't answer L&T vs. AMA issue - but is something that makes a large difference for us in starting an Avid job.
One other thing I really like about it, is it's ability to lay off to video without having to transcode to anything.
For example H.264 camera files go down to HDCamSR in real time vs. the time we have to spend 'rendering' to pro res to lay off in FCP.

Totally agree. Using cloned drives between two remote editors is a pretty typical way for Avid editors to work when they don't use shared storage for collaboration. It's an area where linking/relinking and edit-it-place techniques are really dicey, unless everyone is very careful.
It's exactly those issues that become the bane of existence for "finishing" post houses when an offline editor brings an FCP job in for onlining. The more time you take to control your media management so that it becomes idiot-proof down the road, the better off you'll be. It's one of the reasons I go through a lot of elaborate steps with HDSLR media in FCP or MC - BEFORE I ever launch the editor.
