[Avid-L2] Re: Re-linking from FCP project via Automatic Duck - solved

Interesting since those changed sequences involved new media captured in a different project hence the multiple yet unique treatments of the same tape name but different project associations. Since the auto duck process has no project association why would the different instances of the same tape name be thought of as different with no project association at all? I thought it was differing project associations that accounted for the Avid thinking of the same tape names as different reels. What am I missing?

I used to run into this a lot with changed sequences coming in. I would have to modify the new tape names to the first tapes of the same name. then everything would relink.

Does this mean Auto Duck brings across the tape name but no project association? I assume the decompose attaches the current project for project association and thus allows for the relink to clips captured with the same tape name and current project association. Does this make sense?

[Avid-L2] Re: Re-linking from FCP project via Automatic Duck

You can export the FC bin as an ALE file using Sebsky tools (Google for it or check the list's download page), don't know how to do it, if ever possible, with automatic Duck, which may be the right tool. Also try to go to Set bin display in Avid, and select Show reference clips; 3 options here: A) all the cuts in the timeline are associciated with 24 hours long master clips (useless); B) all the cuts in the timeline are associated to clips of the same (or close to) duration of any given cut (kind of a consolidated sequence and useless for You); C) all the cuts in the timeline are correctly associated with their souce clips... Still verify if tape names translated correctly. HTH Luca

This was in that link. It is older, from July, but no one seems to have a
real definitive answer, which is frustrating because I want to make a
purchase decision on this before the end of the year.

[Avid-L2] Re: Re-linking from FCP project via Automatic Duck - solved

I was not able to modify the the source reels from the AAF, as there was no other project association to modify to (since the original project was Final Cut).
I wound up taking the AAF sequence, and re-doing the decompose in the new project. Once I did that, the full length clips relinked without problem.

This image is actually from the 1D Mark IV. So does that cast some doubt
on 60fps @ 720p being available in the 5D Mark II firmware update?

The new firmware for the 5D Mark II will not only feature 24p, but there
will also be a 720p @ 60fps mode.

I neglected reporting on this because I just figured that was a given.
I've received numerous tips on this.

These are nothing more than re-publications of Avid PR.

I'm looking for engineering documents like those you find at Apple
Developers site. Of course, the GPU is supported? But, the question is
how are data flows handled? I guess you didn't read the White Papers
published by FAST, Canopus, and Matrox on HOW data are moved and
processed by GPUs.

For example, iMovie 09 has RT FX, but only progressive video is
correctly scaled. Once one understands the engineering of iMovie the
scaling artifacts that appear on interlaced video can be explained.
This, in turn, has enabled me to write software that solves the
problem. Bottom-line, I was not talking about marketing documents
posted at sites that sell products.

[Avid-L2] Re: OT on FX

"Hi Steve,

Actually I think Avid has been quite public about these things for a
while now. Ever since Media Composer 3.0 was launched we've been
talking about how we use the GPU and the CPU to move FX processing
back and forth. We've also been using all the cores available for both
FX and Codecs for quite some time now. This will be dependent on what
your sequence looks like and the compression resolution you are using.

Importing QuickTime into MC is entirely controlled by QuickTime and we
don't have any control of the NVidia GPU decoding of H264 streams.

Michel Rynderman
Avid Technology, Inc."

Thank you Michel,

Knowing for several years that Win 7 and Snow were coming -- and
having no need for AMA until it supports AVCHD -- I've been ignoring
(my bad, not Avids) all releases until both operating systems began
shipping. (Why pay for MC upgrades that might require more paid
upgrades -- when my 2.8.4 does everything I need. And yes, it runs
nicely under 10.5.8.)

Now that both 7 and SL are shipping and are installed on new computers
-- PLUS many new computers have Quad processors -- I wanted to check
that MC could make use of the performance provided by these new
systems. (Of course, Windows 7 is still unsupported. Hopefully, not for
much longer.)

For the Mac, the Avid site says for 4.0.4:

OS: Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)

1) Does this mean one can run SL in 64-bit mode?

2) Does it mean that MC now actually uses task/buffers larger than
4GB? (Is MC still Carbon like FCP -- or is it Cocoa?)

Lastly, there are new quad-core hp laptops that use the GeForce GT
230M with 1GB of VRAM. Since VRAM can be used to buffer input and
output to/from GPU FX logic -- this would seem to be a real help with
HD RT FX. Looking at the Avid site -- it's showing only "NVIDIA Quadro
FX family (FX 560 or higher)". Which raises two questions:

1) Does MC make use of all the VRAM that is available?

2) When will these new NVIDIA chips that have, for example, HD
PureVideo plus HDMI with HDCP be supported in addition to the Quadro
FX chips that frankly aren't being included in any of the new laptops?

Lastly, I'd be curious how much performance increase folks notice when
moving from 10.5 dual-core to 64-bit 10.6 i7 quad-core systems.
Benchmarks show 3X greater performance -- although moving-up to 8GB
RAM played a big role when multiple applications were OPEN at the same
time.

Time is closing on an end-of-the year investment.

There was a presentation image circulating recently that was
misintepreted as a menu form the 5D showing 24p. It turned out to be
the 1D IV. So, nothing new for the 5D.

[Avid-L2] Re: NitrisDX sync from incoming HDSDI

Depending on your frame rate you can use standard black burst if you're in the 29.97/59.94 world. Yes you can usually get away without it. When locking to incoming video you will see a lot more breakup on the out point of an insert edit. That is not to say the tape is breaking up just the signal when it comes out of edit. When the edit out point is played back it will be stable. Another phenomenon is that if the Avid stalls while outputing to an SR 5500/5800 and it is locked to incoming video you will punch a hole in the master that looks like a broken control track. The only solution is to assemble edit from that point on. It has been my experience that when the deck is locked to an external reference you are much less likely to have this occur even when using space bar to stop an edit. My theory is that because the Avid output signal breaks up on a stall etc... the deck is trying to reference to a moving target and this creates an erratic slewing of the scanner trying to lock to an unstable signal and irreconcilable errors occur and require an assemble edit. With the deck locked to external the scanner servo remains locked to a stable source of reference even when the avid goes wacky. You'd really be foolish to not spring for a AJA Gen-10 for peace of mind and stability.

RE: [Avid-L2] Linking 1080 FLX files to 30i dubs

Never mind, I didn't realize Avid Log Exchange did the frame rate conversion. I was thinking the buttons were for telling it what you were importing, rather than what you wanted exported.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Linking 1080 FLX files to 30i dubs

I'm working on promos for a show that isn't delivering cuts yet, so we are working mostly from dailies. We happen to be getting dailies in the form of DVD burn-in screeners which isn't so bad. I came up with a process of ripping them with MPEGStreamclip to 20:1 QTs on the tower and our laptops, then fast importing them with MC on my own laptop and then copying the media files over to the Avid. I brought in 18 hours of footage in 5 hours, and the only interruption to my editing was when the Avid rebuilt the databases after I copied the media over.

Once I had the QTs in Composer, I modified the source to match the daily reel, and modified the TC to match the burn-in so everything matched up in online, which is done at 30i. What takes a lot of time however is subclipping and naming all of the takes.

We just got copies of the FLX/ALE files, which I figured would be a huge timesaver. I could import them as subclips, match up sources to the imported DVD QTs, then relink. Unfortunately this doesn't work because the ALEs are all 1080p.

There are two ways to go from here- find a way to remove the pulldown from the QTs to turn them back into 24 and edit with a mixed format timeline in MCv.4. I'm sure that would involve some lengthy tanscoding which might take longer than overnight, and temporarily require double the disk space. Also I'm not certain the timecodes would reliably match up with the original HDCAMs.

Instead, is there a program that can process the ALE or FLX files to convert them to 29.97? Is there a way to import them into a 1080 project and get them turned into 30?

The simplest thing of course is to batch capture them from tape, but that is real time and SR deck usage costs extra.

[Avid-L2] Re: Re-linking from FCP project via Automatic Duck

When you brought in the AAF, did it show all the sources as full sources or were they just what was used in the sequence? I thought I remembered them being the full sources, I'm not sure though as I always do a decompose after import.

You could take all the sources in FCP and throw them at the end of the timeline and Duck that. Since you are following the same route with everything the sources should have the same names.

Re: [Avid-L2] DVD printers

When it's needed, you'll get the highest combined quality, speed and
reliability from a thermal retransfer printer.

They produce permanent, professional, 600dpi waterproof full-hub
lables just like the commercial discs. They print from ribbons, rather
than inkwells, and thermally bond to the disc.

This one runs around $6k. The company will send you some free samples.

[Avid-L2] Re-linking from FCP project via Automatic Duck

Hi All,

I'm working on a re-edit of a documentary that was originally done about 5 years ago on FCP. I've brought the latest sequence into Avid via Automatic Duck. So far, so good, the AAF imported flawlessly. But now, since this will be a major overhaul of the sequence, I want to recapture all of the original material (not just the de-composed clips), then relink the converted sequence to the full length clips.
After capturing the first tape, I tried to relink the clips from the AAF sequence, but it didn't work. I noticed that the project association of the tape names is from my newly created Avid project, so I suspect that that doesn't match with the AAF clips.
Is there a way to get my sequence to relink with the newly captured tapes, or will I have to go back and re-capture the de-composed clips from the AAF?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Right, they won't honor the US warranty in Japan.

Re: [Avid-L2] DVD printers

While this response might be somewhat controversial, we've had pretty
good results with Microboards' GS-1 (GS-2 is the current version. Caveats:
1- use only Taiyo Yuden media. The robotics are very sensitive to the
physical dimensions of the media. Others have a tendency to jam it up.
2- these devices are not what I'd call plug and play, more like plug and
play around with til it gets stable and then everything will run ok most
of the time
3- We've run many long batches- 50 disks at a time, but I wouldn't
totally walk away from it and expect everything to be done next morning.

Their support has been pretty good as well.
