[Avid-L2] Re: Hopeful news for Symphony

<<Once things have gone to software and an I/O system that works equally well with MC or Symphony>>

Well, they haven't EOLed Nitris DX yet that I know of. Adding the AVC card added function. Is there room for another daughter card in there?

[Avid-L2] Re: Hopeful news for Symphony

I keep coming back to hardware in this conversation. When Symphony was introduced, it was hardware that differentiated it from Media Composer. Uncompressed video, SDI I/O, chips for color correction and then a chip for Ultimatte. With the Nitris Classic gear - also hardware.

Once things have gone to software and an I/O system that works equally well with MC or Symphony, you end up with a software package that includes all the features, but where some of them are disabled or enabled through software keys or other coding. Such artificial restrictions tend to irritate users.

So *how* Avid moves forward is as important as what it actually adds or changes.

[Avid-L2] San Antonio, TX ACSR?

Crosspost to ACI-L & Avid-L2

Hello all,

I'm finishing up some work in San Antonio today and I'd love to be able to recommend an ACSR to help them with their new installations of MC 5.5. They also have 2 Avid DS systems.

If you can recommend one or two folks, I know they'd appreciate it.

Cheers,

RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Hopeful news for Symphony - now DS

Actually, I don't believe it can. A huge underlying flaw with MC's
underlying architecture is that it doesn't understand alpha as part of every
clip - it doesn't carry RGBA (or YUVA or whatever) with every source.
That's a huge drawback for compositing.

Mr. Tony,
Fun reading. I can't guess who you might be referring to? ;-) But don't
you remember all of your concerns can be solved by putting a nest within a
nest on MCsoft.

I've had good luck with Clipwrap. I'm on MC 4.05 and needed something to deal with footage shot on the Panasonic AF100 shooting that AVCHD format. The import process took forever, but it made it possible to see the footage. I guess MC 5 takes care of the AVCHD issue.

Oh Jeff, now you are sounding old school. Don't you know we are all supposed to be masters of all trades now. :-/

Seriously though, Symphony doesn't have the best in class at any specific tool anymore, but the combination in one timeline helps to make up for it. If Avid can continue making i higher price point on Symphony, it can justify development to address those shortcomings. If it has to just have one package that it sells at $995. (to FCP users) then you aren't going to see much in the way of development going forward. That's simple business math. Avid doesn't have the huge user base of Apple to profit from.

I'm not arguing against differentiation, just that it has to have substance. As Ken pointed out, Color and FCP and Motion serve completely different functions. And after all, that may not be the case any longer in a month. But with MC and Symphony, the lines are completely blurred, which is why we are all having so much trouble with the concept.

Take Smoke for example. I dare say there's little new market for Smoke-Linux. In fact, Autodesk is clearly trying to move Flame-Smoke-Lustre towards a single product (Flame Premium), albeit as a bundle. That's because the Smoke (only) market has likely moved downscale for them.

What remains is a financial question. Will an enhanced Symphony sell more units than simply as upgrades to existing Symphony owners? Or should Avid think about augmenting the product line in different ways?

Re: [Avid-L2] Smart Tools tryiing to be open minded?

Oh, and what I meant was that segments become selected as a result of
me hitting T (not marked -- the clip the position marker is on is
marked as it should be). But maybe I'm imagining things. I probably
do, even to me it sounds to weird to be true.

Then it's probably me accidentally selecting segments before hitting T
without noticing it? The funny thing is, I can't really tell right now
because most of the stuff I do is muscle-memory by now. I'll actually
have to deliberately watch what I'm doing.

[Avid-L2] Re: Hopeful news for Symphony

The rudimentary difference is that MC and Symphony are both equally capable editors. (Color, Motion, FCP) (Premiere,AE,PS) are completely different apps. Symphony, however was attractive to an On-line facility who could afford the external hardware to support an On-line shop. You could have a full color corrector on MC but if you are grading interlaced footage on your progressive flat screen, you will be missing out on a lot of bad motion artifacts. You probably won't have a proper scope, well maybe a software scope, you probably won't have an HDCam SR deck so you wont be able to output your film to tape. The additional gear needed gets expensive. Dedicated developement teams are more likely if a product carries the cost, and of course, the BUZZ (hello Avid Marketing and DS) to make clients realize that a "high end" product is available and the correct way to properly finish films. Symphony is a great "Total Conform" box for many finishing situations. For heavier lifting, compositing, better graphics, DS is DA BOMB, but it certainly could be DA SHIZ NIT (thats better) if marketed and developed correctly. I'm starting to lose track of my original thought, because I have a client that wants to shoot 40 hours of EPIC 5K for a quick turnaround 2 minute piece.....but that's what I'm thinking anyway.

You're being facetious and fun but the reason is overhead in one program. You can't have one app do "everything" and do it well.
