They use glycerine in vap solution and that is part of whats expelled
That will condense on to the surface of metal including parts in the computer.
Only steam is pure water and if tgey can inhale steam and then puff it out thats fine.

Good luck with it.

Subject: [Avid-L2] OT SSD reformat

This is a little off topic, cross-posting here because maybe someone has a tip: I accidently pulled an SSD out of an external drive holder (aka 'toaster') and now it won't reformat.

In Mac OSx Disk Utility it fails after a long time trying to unmount; can't seem to partition it using terminal commands, either. I tried formatting in Win7 on a USB 2 connection, but it failed at the very end - now it mounts in OSx Disk Utility showing a completely 'full' partition, but still won't re-partition the drive. (fails during 'unmount' still.)

Disk warrior says the hardware is fine, but obviously doesn't do anything with the directory, since there doesn't seem to be one.

(This is one of the faithful Sandisk drives out of my 1st-gen BMD cameras- which I no longer have, so I can't use them to format.)

Anyone have an idea how to resurrect this drive? I obviously don't care about the media that was on it - just want to get it back into service.

thanks in advance.

[Avid-L2] Re: Network Says Cut Native (24) and Deliver Broadcast (30 or 60)

I export a QT Ref out of Avid to carry the 10 audio stems I need, or more, for the delivery.  I use Adobe Media Encoder to add pulldown.  No muss no fuss, but you do have to be mindful to export with the Full Range setting.  Even though the media essence from Avid if Rec 709 if you don't check the Full Range/RGB on older Avid systems you will end up with low levels if you are going to anything other than DNX media.

The safe way is to export color bars with it set to Full Range and then do the same set to Rec 709/Legal Level.  Do the conversion and then ama to the results.  This will come back at correct levels if the video essence of the encoded file is truely Rec 709.  It doesn't hurt to check the source settings to make sure no scalers have been automatically added.  In my experience going from DNX_175X QT Ref to XDCam 50 or H_264 .movs this works fine when I export with the Full Range check box selected.

Adobe Media Encoder does add pull down a 3:2 not 2:3 but this is visually identical and you will have a consistent cadence.  You need to be mindful of the duration of bars and tone prior to program start so make sure you end up on a full frame at program start.  Also be aware many networks now prefer 2:2:2:4 over the less juddery 2:3 or 3:2.  They do this to avoid having to deal with any split frames when converting for streaming.

If you have varying codecs in your sequence then a mixdown is a safer way to go.  I force all my renders to a common codec which avoids the need for a mixdown but there are gotcha along the way and the general consensus is to use mixdowns even if you are going to use QT Ref exports.

Patch fixes can be a challenge in this work flow but I found I could use custom exports in Adobe Media Encoder marking an in and an out where the patch is for subsequent fixes.  If you take the time to muscle through this you can avoid the headaches of mixdowns which when QC fixes come in can be problematic because if you just mixdown the problem area it negates the consistent cadence as it's hard to determine where to start the revised mixdown relative to an A frame.  I think it can be done but it would take some tests and I assume you would have to look on the master sequence and display 30 DF code that shows A frame, B Frame etc... and pick you in and out points for patch fixes based on the indicated A and D frames.  It can become quite a dance so I've stuck to the QT Ref export.

When I informed a network that in order to maintain a proper cadence I had to go through many steps they realized on the second season it is easier for them if we just deliver native 23.976 with masters and patches after QC it was easier for them to do the final conversion.

[Avid-L2] Q: CC / Safe Color Settings

TO:
Avid-L2

Hey gang,

I'm on Sierra (10.12.4) running 8.8.5 (though have seen what I'm asking about in earlier releases with El Capitan, too), and I do *not* have the Symphony option.

When I go the Safe Color Settings, the pulldown menu has 3 choices (Ignore, Warn, Limit) rather than just 2  (Ignore & Warn). A screen grab is attached.

I don't see "Limit" mentioned in Avid's documentation.

When I select Limit, it simply switches the checkmark to "Warn."
Is "Limit" a Symphony feature that is peaking out in MC?

I'm just curious why I'm seeing that selection, and if it's supposed to do something.

Thanks!

Re: [Avid-L2] Network Says Cut Native (24) and Deliver Broadcast (30 or 60)

I would cut 23.98, master output 23.98, and then convert that master export to 59.94i.

Numbers have been rounded so really we're talking 23.976, etc.

Our contact at the network has told us that despite the specifics on the network spec sheet, which call for "…conversion of the finished master with an external, high-quality frame rate device converted and properly timed to 59.94i," we can do an Avid conversion.

But how?

Do I simply open the sequence in a 59.94i project, render and export? This is the process I went through; does this make sense?:

  1. Cut a (native) 23.976p sequence in a 23.976 project - Project 24
  2. Created a new 59.94i project - Project 60
  3. Opened final sequence bin from Project 24
  4. Loaded sequence in record monitor. Got this message: "This sequence frame rate does not match the project frame rate. Do you want to load a copy of this sequence that has been modified to match the project's play rate?"
  5. I chose 'Yes.'
  6. Got this message: "Could not change the format of sequence [Sequence Name]. This sequence contains imported Matte Keys that must be mixed down. Please modify this sequence while in a project that matches the sequence's native project type."
  7. I then returned to Project 24 and removed the imported matte keys.
  8. Back in Project 60 I put the now matteless sequence in the record monitor and rendered all.

Is this now a 59.94i sequence or at least the best I can do in Media Composer? And what's the best work flow to get the matte keys back in?

    Thanks,

    Martin
