Re: [Avid-L2] OT: File Backup App (not for media)

Carbon Copy Cloner. Not the cheapest or the easiest, but I'm a big fan. The developer has been outstanding over the years maintaining a stable product and providing excellent support.

SuperDuper is the other old school, widely respected backup for Mac. Cheaper and a bit simpler, but when I tried it eons ago it couldn't do something I needed, I don't remember what that was.

These are traditional backup programs.

I use time Machine for my system drive, but only because it's super easy, and not for individual file history. For me, it's only a disaster recovery backup. If you really want it to work as designed for individual files, you need a very large backup drive, at least three times the expected primary size. If you have a lot of constantly changing, large files, as I do (video editor), you need a REALLY large drive because versioning wipes out older files too quickly to be of use. For this reason, I don't store large files on my system drive at all and I exclude all other drives from Time Machine.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner for everything else.

OK . . . I officially hate Apple Time Machine.

It's plugged-in every hour of every day when I'm working. Now, only the second time that I've ever gone in to retrieve a file > > > it's nowhere to be found!

I've searched a myriad of ways, including file type (.psd) along with criteria such as created after 1/1/23.

What good is it if it doesn't backup stuff?!

Anyone have a recommendation for a more robust alternative?

TIA . . . now, please excuse me while I retire from the computer in order to clean up the mess in my office — from my head exploding . . . . <sigh>

Thanks all!

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: File Backup App (not for media)

I use CrashPlan Pro as a cloud backup. It's $10 per month per device for unlimited storage.

Additionally, I use ChronoSync to make backups of my Avid projects folder, et al. You can configure it to run a number of ways, but I have mine set to trigger a backup 5 minutes after it detects a filesystem change. This means that 5 minutes after I hit save, it makes a copy of whatever .avb files have changed since the last sync. I have it going to a folder on my Dropbox, and my Dropbox folder is also getting backed up to CrashPlan.

I also recently started using JottaCloud ($9.90/month) to test it out as an alternative to CrashPlan.

I've never used TimeMachine and don't plan to.

[Avid-L2] Deck Control with Blackmagic UltraStudio HD Mini

Upgrading to Mac M1, MC 2022.10 and a Blackmagic UltraStudio HD Mini for
I/O. Using a PDW-F1600 XDCAM deck.

Of course video, audio and deck control are flawless with BMD's software
(Media Express).

Avid sees audio and video -- but sees nothing for the deck. Deck
Configuration shows no ports on Direct.

Anyone know the secret sauce for getting Avid to play nice with the
UltraStudio??

Many thanks in advance.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid and BCC Title Studio?

I forgot to mention it also sets the Controls Panal Drop Shadow back to default 20 when it was set to 8.

[Avid-L2] Avid and BCC Title Studio?

Super novice in BCC Title Studio.  I have muscled my way to a two line lower third and sorted out the Shape Position to move the text to lower left corner with the text left justified.  I'm applying the drop shadow in the Controls Panal.  I set the composite Pos X to left and the Pos Y to bottom.  All this seems to play okay but when I duplicate the BCC effect for the next credit page and start retyping the text gets positioned back to the center of the frame and I have to manually re-enter Shape Postition Pos X and Pos Y.  I thought I was just typing over the existing text and I don't understand why it moves the newly typed text back to center screen.  Anybody understand the logic BCC Title Studio is using.  Again I'm novice so there may be something very basic I don't understand about the structure of this tool.

It's so nice to have to learn an interface that has the complexity of BCC Red/Avid fx when all I need it classic Title Tool functionality.

[Avid-L2] All current Artist I/O's are past their Final Sale Date, what's coming?

I came across some interesting information while exploring I/O options for a few new systems.  In Avid's January 4, 2023 End of Life document I found every one of the current I/O options to be past their Final Sale Date.

From:  https://www.avid.com/products/avid-artist-io
"Avid Artist I/O interfaces offer extensive HD and high-res format support across four interfaces—Avid Artist | DNxIQ, Avid Artist | DNxIV, new Avid Artist | DNxIP, and new Avid Artist | DNxID. This flexibility future-proofs your production, enabling you to work with today’s high-res formats, while supporting HD and SD too. You can also work with 2K or 4K media and deliver in HD with the onboard real-time down-converter, enabling you to transition to high-res at your own pace."

Artist | DNxIV 9935-72385-00 12/31/2022 12/31/2027

Has anyone heard anything about what new and/or revised I/O tech might be on the way?

Cheers
