The Source monitor in the Composer window goes black whenever you go into/out of Trim Mode. It may also do this on other actions, but I have not identified them all.

One work around is to actually physically drag the entire Composer window from one monitor to another monitor, and then put it back in place. But obviously, that sucks.

I am hoping this bug has been noted and will be fixed in the next update.

Much obliged,

Re: [Avid-L2] Continuing Quest to output Dolby Vision over HDMI from Resolve 15.4 using Avid DNxIO?

I took a DolbyVision mastering class at AbelCine Burbank and I finally figured out how to get simultaneous HDR and SDR output on my home system.  The Aja Hi5-4K Plus turns on the HDR on my 2016 LG OLED.  The glitch I was having is I thought on my Avid DNxIO the two rows of bnc outputs SDI_A thru SDI_D would each be an eye in stereo mode.  Using this logic I ran Resolve in HD mode and set up stereo with top row SDI_A feeding LG OLED and bottom row SDI_A feeding my Sony PVM 2541.  I was getting the same signal to both monitors.  Then I moved the bottom row connector to SDI_B and then I had proper seperate channels so I could tweak HDR on left eye to LG and SDR on right eye on Sony PVM.

Based on this I know believe the two rows of sdi outputs are identical and the stereo signal in HD is left eye SDI_A and right eye on SDI_B.  I have a colour lab HDR plugin that I put on the left eye channel to create HDR levels for the left eye.  Now I'm rocking with both signals.  Hope this helps others avoid my mistake.

Tunneling with Resolves ecmu still doesn't seem possible without upgrading to an Ultra Studio 4K Extreme.  Sure seems like there is enough power in the DNxIO with it's FPGAs to be flashed into doing this but marketing is marketing.

Further testing at home (also 2019.9) and it is related to when the panel is floating and holds true (i.e. repositions) for:
Audio Mixer (centres), Audio Punch In, Audiosuite (top left), Audio EQ (top left), Settings (centre)

and doesn't reposition for:
Project, Composer, Timeline, Source Browser, Inspector Tool, Markers, Audio Punch In, Audio Tool, Color Info, Motion Effect Editor, Effect Editor, Effect Palette, Calculator, Console, Timecode window etc etc...

Well it seems OK on 2019.11.0 on Win10 hmm...

Also seeing failure to display plug-ins - either AAX or Audiosuite. Usually fixed eventually by toggling to a different workspace and back again (I've seen this on previous versions of Avid)

Re: [Avid-L2] Recommendations for upgrading GPU on MacPro 2010

I have a very similar machine, with two 3.46Mhz chips. I had an Nvidia GPU for a while but that drove me crazy with display glitches all over Media Composer (there are posts about it on the Avid forum). I moved to a RX580 recently and appart from the lack of boot screen (monitors stay black until the drivers are loaded), which is frankly a detail, it's a breeze.

I went for the officially approved model, the Sapphire Pulse. Don't get their Nitro+ as it's thicker and you will lose a PCi slot. It's only marginally overclocked so it's not even worth it. The Pulse lets you use all three remaining PCI slots, though I'd recommend putting a small card in slot 2 to avoid blocking the GPU fans. If you have a Windows drive on your system, it's rather easy to flash the Pulse to limit its top power, you're losing a couple of percents but in return it puts the GPU way under the max power the Mac can deliver. It's not compulsory to do though. Oh yes, that's the nice thing about this card, it can be powered from the two PCI sockets and with a couple of years on the market and a lot of users, no negative feedback on doing so.

I run 2019.11 on Mojave with it, and my current project was shot 4K but all converted to HD/DNxHD85 for editing. I usually go for 36 but I joined this project after it started. So far so good from a machine point of view. And I quite like the new interface. I was reading yesterday that thanks to the new Mac Pro, Red finalized hardware acceleration for MacOS using Metal and that the SDK was offered for DaVinci and Avid. And since this GPU is officially Metal happy, it can only benefit us users of the "old" Cheese Grater even if this machine is out of the officially supported list.
https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/12/13/red-apple-complete-metal-gpu-accelerated-r3d-support/

So honestly, since this GPU can be found for cheap -it's $190 on Amazon at the moment!-, it's a no brainer since it'll allow you to squeeze more use of your Mac Pro. Don't forget to buy the specific power cable.

Re: [Avid-L2] Recommendations for upgrading GPU on MacPro 2010

I'm running basically that sane machine, maybe slower processors, and just went to High Sierra from Sierra.  I had some nVidia-related problems but got them worked out. I can't go to Mojave because I have nVidia graphics cards - so my next upgrade will probably be a PC.   I'd love the new MacPro, if it was $3 or 4k loaded, but $6k base is whack.  Better graphics card certainly makes a difference with Resolve, not as much Media Composer.

For what it's worth 2019.x is not officially supported on an old cheesegrater, but I haven't had much problem.  It can be a bit sluggish once in a while, but not like, you know, 'Adrenaline' sluggish.  I also have a new weird audio bug (that's been reported by others) after moving to 2019.11

Interestingly, I DIDNT upgrade BCC - I'm on 10 something, and it still mostly works.  At least the plugins I use work.  It didn't work with Resolve, so I had to remove it because I haven't been able to justify upgrading it.

There are some real advantages to MC 2019 - exporting OP1A, the dropping that into encoder, is way faster that almost any other export workflow I've tried.  And the encodes have been really good.  (Reference quicktime was broken a while ago, from the Adobe side.)

Not sure if any of this helps at all.

Be sure to clone (carbon copy or whatever) your boot drive before you upgrade.  If you have the discs and such, and patience, it's probably better to do a clean install - so be sure to deactivate any licenses you have before rebuilding your system drive.  And, of course, put your new system drive on an SSD.  If you haven't already done it, that makes a HUGE difference on a cheesegrater.

So I'd like to know if anyone has any advice regarding:
1.  If I just move to High Sierra, will I see any value in changing the GPU to the Radeon RX 580?

Re: [Avid-L2] AVID export to FLIX with animation fails

You could try duplicating the sequence and doing a video Mixdown and replace the VFXs with it. That would make the sequence "AAF friendly" for third parties.

Ok.  The older 2013 iMacs have a M.2 slot on the logic board unused.       You can put a 512 M.2 (The Apple version) Swap out the HDD to 4 TB enterprise drive and be good for some years.

Good luck
