[Avid-L2] Re: Z820 Memory 7.04 AJA

I have seen the exact same symptoms on my Z820 -- and it is always related to the well-documented problem with Google Chrome browser.  You might check Windows Task Manager > Processes Tab to make sure an instance of Chrome is not running,

[Avid-L2] Z820 Memory 7.04 AJA

We have 2 machines that exhibit the same thing.. The Kernel paged memory gradually gets used .. up to 10G’s even without avid running so with 16 G that doesn’t leave much left.

We have other z820’s where this doesn’t happen and with AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox hardware. In general this paged memory is less than a gig on all machines except 2.. Reading on the net  it seems likely it’s a memory leak but in what… They are avid spec machines etc

I know lots of possibilities but anyone had this?

Re: [Avid-L2] Cine Deck does insert Edits? Somebody Pinch me

It was nice to meet you too !

If the Cinedeck can edit into all types of files and insert audio only then I need to take a look at it.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: relink offline seq to ama

Whenever relinking to AMA clips fails for me, it always turns out to be the same problem: somewhere I have a bin open with transcoded clips open and selected, and the relink always targets those clips rather than the AMA masterclips.

So do this:  make a bin that has just the sequence you want to relink, plus the AMA clips you want to relink to.  Close every other bin in your project.

Select all the AMA clips and the sequence and choose the option to 'relink to selected clips in all open bins'.  Doesn't hurt to make the relink as permissive as possible (ie. ignore case, use any media drive, etc.).

You can still run into problems relinking to the wrong file if you have duplicate filenames/timecodes, but the relinking process should work.

If it still fails, as a last-ditch effort, you can rename your "Avid MediaFiles" folders on all drives to hide all transcoded media, and try the relink again to the AMA files, but I haven't needed to do this since I've become more careful about what bins are open when I relink.

Cheers,

Avid P&Z has always been pretty horrible for all but the simplest moves.

Good luck with doing it in Marquee unless you are on a healthy hourly rate and no desire to see your family.

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 8 Yosemite Radeon conflicts?

What issues? I have multiple stations on 10.8.5 reporting lots of sluggish behavior with simple clips (even DNxHD 36). Avid says some some issues are know with OS 10.10.x on some macs (in the readme for 8.2/8.3) and says go down to Mavericks, but I see them in Mountain Lion too. Been going back and forth with support on this for the past few weeks - both the problem and the troubleshooting are torturous.

- sluggish scrub
- playback is often playing audio while we wait for video to skip along until it jumps into sync (clips and sequences)
- occasional issues with extremely long save times and other application beach ball behavior

Any of these happening to you? Trying to convince them it's not just me - sent them lots of user posts on the Avid forums. We keep trying troubleshooting ideas but I'm getting tired of being the guinea pig. Not sure what it will take to get this solved, but I'm thinking hard about taking my 14-license facility back down to 7.0.3, the last version I used without these issues.

[Avid-L2] Re: Interesting NAB Discoveries Dante Audio Network

Found several audio transport options with Dante being the most interesting to me.  Over Cat 5e you can control audio devices and send a lot of audio channels bi directionally.  Replacing a mike snake with an ethernet cable seems like a no brainer and a ton lighter.  Here's some of the specs:

Audio Channels

Dante supports the following:

Gigabit: 512 x 512 48kHz/24bit audio channels can be sent over a single link, giving a total of 1024 bi-directional channels. For 96kHz 24bit audio the channel capacity is halved.

100Mbps (Fast Ethernet): 48 x 48 48kHz/24bit audio channels can be sent over a single link, giving a total of 96 bi-directional channels. For 96kHz/24bit audio the channel capacity is halved.

In Audio Architect a maximum of 32 channels can be assigned to any single Dante Processing Object. At 48kHz a maximum of 64 input and 64 output channels can be configured. At 96kHz a maximum of 32 input and 32 output channels can be configured for a single device.

sorry if it was a bit confusing. The We is root6. We are both the UK reseller for R&S (so I am biased in favour of Venice and suggested you check it out in the same space as Cinedeck) and we are also the manufacturers of ContentAgent (www.root6technology.com) which is the thing that can do insert edits on an AS11 DPP compliant file (that was created on the ContentAgent).

So, to be clear; we *sell* R&S Venice and we *make* ContentAgent.

[Avid-L2] Re: relink offline seq to ama

Lou,

Put your sequence in a bin on it's own.  Show the reference clips.  Give the reference clips a disk label or tape id based on the roll number of the clips.  Maybe they already have a tape name attached?

Load up your corresponding AMA files in another bin and give the clips the exact same disk label/tape ID that you have given the reference clips.

Check all the timecodes match, if they don't they won't relink.  As long as the duration is the same you can change the start tc of the reference clips to match the ama clips.

Select all the ama clips in the bin.  Select just your sequence.  Right click your sequence and choose "relink to selected items in all open bins" and choose to relink by start tc and disk label or tape id (depending on what you have given the clips).

Place a tick in the "ignore extension" tickbox and then place a "." (period) in the box below it.  I normally choose "any HD format" to give myself the best chance of relinking as if you have i material and p material Avid will ignore one or the other depending on the project type you are in.  If you have a mixture of sd and hd then choose Any.

Hit relink.  Your sequence should come back online.  Consolidate or transcode it to your media storage.

If you are using material which does not have proper timecode eg. gopro, older 5D etc then be careful as Avid will give all those clips a 00:00:00:00 start timecode which can cause havok.  If in doubt, alter tc's to be unique or alter disk label to be unique eg. roll number+clip name rather than just roll number.

As long as the frame rate, duration, start tc and one other column of metadata match, you will be able to relink any and everything to whatever you want, all the time.

Re: [Avid-L2] Sequence edited from subclips looses correct source info

I wonder if this also happens in the List Tool - I don't think it does. I make EDLs and Source Lists for the same reasons you describe, and haven't run into this issue. Could just be a bug with the Sequence Reporter wanting to prefer Tape names over anything else. I use File_32 EDL format in List Tool and always see the source names.

I'm testing the conform on a project, and ran into a problem I've never experienced.  The DI transcoded Alexa files to offline resolution in Avid 8.3.1, imported the audio, and auto synced the files.  The editor cuts using the subclips.  Typically, when I get the sequence to conform, I generate a sequence report so I know what drives to connect and what clips to link to. Conforming in Resolve, or Avid usually works best by linking to the required media, then importing an AAF and consolidating the media.  I've used this process for several years.  However, on this project, when the sequence report is generated, it says no imported sources, and lists "tapes" which have the reel names of the audio files.  The metadata of the picture files names and path is lost.

The problem is specific to synced subclips used in the edit.  Non-subcliped files in the edit show up as imported sources with proper names and paths in the sequence report.  Looking at the subclips in the bin, the source file and path show correctly, with no information in the "tape" column.  As soon as those clips are edited into a sequence, the report only lists audio "tape" names.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this.

Thanks, Scott
