Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!
With a Yahoo account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2, you can use the web features of the Group.

[Avid-L2] NAB Looky Loo List?

I'll be off to NAB Sunday.  I missed it last year due to work.  I figured I'd type of a list of my curiosities and see what suggestions others might have on brands etc...

Here are things I want to learn about:

1)  Proper monitoring for alternate color spaces like Rec 20/20, P3, HDR in it's various flavors.  Scopes, Monitors and how the different project settings in Avid interact e.g. can I work in a Rec 709 project and infrastructure and then in the end switch to Rec 20/20 for output to that world.  Kind of like color correcting in SD then uprezzing in HD and having the color correction apply correctly, not quite the same but sort of the workflow idea.  It seems to me if delivering in Rec 20/20 I would want to work in that color space and then convert to the more restricted color spaces but given most infrastructures I deal with are Rec 709 centric what are practical solutions.

2)  Tools to access files integrity and structure including QC aspects as well as MetaData insertion.  I've used Media Info to look at files metadata and it's the data parser in Tektronix Aurora File QC software.  What others are out that that would show me things like Full Range vs. Legal Range metadata flags, is the media essence 16-235 or 0-255 which might be different than the files meta data flag?  Also some files will play in many players but fail at a particular networks server ingest system, e.g. I've seen files that play fine everywhere but FCP 7.  Granted FCP 7 is EOL but is there software that could access what makes a file not play audio for several frames only in FCP 7?

3)  Clipster seems to be the defacto standard in IMF and other file creations.  Are there other solutions that might be more suitable in a small shop that don't require costly hardware?  If speed isn't a concern what should I look at.

4)  Control Panels for Resolve etc...  I know BM has a few new panels in the 1K and 3K range.  I have an Artist Color but as I haven't really jumped into Resolve workflows too much I haven 't mastered the Artist Color for Resolve.  I'll look at the BM but I would assume that their panels will only work on BM software.  I have baselight plugin so it would be nice to have a panel that like the Artist Color works for both.  I was told in Resolve class there is no way to remap the Artist Color for Resolve, can anyone confirm that?

5)  Copy Software with Checksum to meet Network delivery requirements etc.  We use ShotPut Pro for our limited needs but is there something else to consider.  Also automated backup and manual backup systems to LTO etc...  Storage DNA has been a strong player here in the past who else?  Editshare Flow is asset management does it also handle backup tasks?

These are just a few of the things I hope to learn more about so any suggestions on vendors and whisper rooms etc would be appreciated.

Anybody know if Maxx Digital is doing the Hard Rock party Monday night.

[Avid-L2] Multicam editing

Hi

Im doing some mulitcam editing which I almost never do.  I have the six cameras in the source monitor and my sequence runs fine.  But I was hoping to do live switching and the source clips don't update in real time as the sequence plays.  Actually I have to stop the sequence and match back to get the 6 cameras to update.   What do I need to do so I can see the cameras all playing in real time?  MC 8.6.5,   thunderbolt raids.

thanks

Re: [Avid-L2] URGENT - Unending Crashes of MC 8.8.2 on OX 10.10.5

I think the answer is yes, it probably would take care of it. The specific problem is the AMA link to the XF-AVC Intra files that the C300 generates. That's where the bug kicks in. There. At the AMA link. So if you transcode to, say, DNxHD 175 (or whatever flavor you need) outside of MC, and then bring the resulting transcode in, I'm sure you'd be golden.
