[Avid-L2] Re: Santa do I want the Baselight Plugin?

If you nest the Baselight effect on a CCR effect then it will further grade the graded shot. Not sure how it works on top of a symphony CCR but I imagine it's the same.

They do have some kind of freelancer license under test too - I think a license code you have to release to re-use.

I like it a lot & now have my rew/ffw assigned to F5/F6 permenantly (needed to jump to prev/next shot within BL GUI)

It is WAY better than a round trip through Resolve & seems to be gaining traction in houses with full BL.

Happy Newt Year

I answer:

We take the international feed from RAI, which is switched live and includes no graphics.  There are no ISOs, but additional beauty shots are fed before the program actually begins.  This year, the Italian director was the best we've ever had.  He got some great video of the Basilica, but also gave the program a smooth lively look; nice camera moves, interesting angles of the proceedings, all timed perfectly and in the respectful tone of the program.
This was a worldwide event we prepare for the US audience.  As the RAI feed is captured, we add English commentary from Monsignor Tom Powers (who is in the Basilica), fed separately.  We capture everything separately as well as mixed in case something needs to be changed or fixed.  After capture (or even before the feed ends), I start to edit the RAI feed to make the program.  The most challenging part of the edit is the opening and the closing.  The rest consists of the RAI feed as it is, with Tom Powers' commentary.  This year, we had some fantastic drone shots of the Basilica's exteriors for the opening, but no music during the feed's 'lead-in' to the Pope's entering the Basilica.  So I made the opening by lifting some music and chorus from later in the feed, adding the announcer's introduction followed by Tom Powers' introduction.  Pictures for the opening were rearranged as well to better lead into the Pope's entrance.  Graphics were added for the opening, a couple of places for locators and Tom Powers' identifiers within the program, and the closing which consisted of the 'NBCUniversal, LLC Copyright 2014'.  An 'NBC Special' announcement was added at the beginning (It's the first thing you see in the program) and a special 'Network Identification' station cue was put on the very end of the show.
Though this yearly program seems simple enough to edit, the hard part is the workflow to get it on the air.  It's around 2 hours long with no breaks, no commercials.  I have developed a workflow that allows this to be done as a Sequence File Transfer, which takes about a half-hour (4 times real time) to complete.  To accommodate this, we need 2 additional Avid edit rooms to act as feed capture rooms (primary and backup).  Once the program is edited and is being File Transferred, we also protect the FT program with a real time playout of the Avid Sequence to DPS Playback in case of trouble with the File Transfer.  As an additional backup, we make an HDCAM SR tape of the program, which we hand carry down to BOC before airtime.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: 8.3 LICENSE issues

Hi Bart,

That makes sense, of course. However, the current change in the licensing system is being combined with a huge clean-up. There used to be separate databases for licenses sold in the online store and licenses sold through VARs. The way they are going about that now means all licenses will be consolidated into Avid Master Accounts. That means that after this initial hurdle, things should be easier to oversee and manage – both for the end user and for Avid.

I'm pretty amazed by how fast Customer Support is handling all this.

Buying licenses was always crap at Avid. I always buy the licenseses first and calculate a few days to let support get everything right (missing system id's, etc) before even trying to upgrade the software. Or even better; never install a new MC version in the first 3 months after a release to get the bugs out.

[Avid-L2] NBC Christmas Eve Mass . . . . Again (My Eleventh Time)

I toot a small horn:

Today, I did my yearly 'Christmas Eve Mass at the Vatican' Special program, which aired on NBC at 11:34pm ET.  This year, the pictures were the best ever from Rome.  The director was superb; the best yet.  RAI gave us incredible shots for our opening; like never before.  There were drone shots of St. Peter's Basilica.  That was a first.  Beautiful passes around the Square in front of the Cathedral, smooth as silk.  And once the program started, the shots from inside were pretty good too.  We saw views of the altar like we've never seen it before.  I noticed that there was at least one wireless shoulder-mounted camera getting some great closeups of the Pope.  The director seemed to be right in tune with the proceedings, getting shots appropriate to the schedule of the Mass.  In addition, the camera operators were getting great shots with interesting moves, breaking the previous years' pattern of showing us static shots of the crowd at seemingly random inopportune moments.  All in all, everyone agreed it was the best Christmas Eve Mass we've ever aired.

Re: [Avid-L2] 8.3 Dongle Upgrade blues

Okay, Raj was right.

Christmas Eve, and I'm trying to initiate support for a half-dozen existing systems. Most are version six or seven.

All were upgraded and registered in the last 2 to 3 years and NONE of them show up in the customers master account. Including two of mine.

And so, we can't use the support activation codes that were just purchased for all of them.

I have screen grabs from every original system registration proving that they were done.

And now I am having to reregister every single one. So far that's not even helping.

What a complete mess.

Fa la la, frickin La Avid!!  •<|:-(

Tks all. Kinda confusing. So why did Avid take his money? The purchase completed normally, and he's got both the activation code and the download link in his account together with the 3rd party app NewBlueTitler and trials of sorenson and izotope.....

Who the hells responsible for this mess? How can anyone believe that making regular clients jump hoops like this is good for business, when the pirates run one little app and activate not just the app but all options..symphony included? Good times, indeed!

Pissed off on xmas eve..not cool

I had similar issues with my upgrades mid summer.  Part of my problem was related to the upgrade code, not the .avd files, would take a day or more to be validated by Avid then my status went from pending to okay.  I also had to email invoices to correct for them not knowing one system was dongle based.

I have the way overpriced cubix expansion chassis.  The Nitris works fine in the expansion chassis, but the decklink extreme 3d+ doesn't work correctly in the expansion chassis.  Ymmv

I don't seem to find any PCIe cards that offer thunderbold connectivity.  Am I missing them or do they not exist?  Perhaps Thunderbold is too much bandwidth for PCI 2.0?

I'm also going to up the ram to 64GB given the 4K workflows that may be coming down the path.  Hard to believe all this stuff is still way less than a VideoTek Harris legalizer or even a GVG proc amp back in the day of composite video and I don't even need a one inch machine as a master record.  Fun but scary times.

John,

Thunderbolt is motherboard dependent and cannot be connected through PCI.
