Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

[Avid-L2] USB to Ethernet Adapter Cable to connect Avid Artist Color Panel?

I may be freelancing at a location with a souped up mid 2012 Mac Pro.  They have Avid and Resolve on the system.  Both the ethernet ports are hooked up on the back.  I'm wondering if I could use a USB to Ethernet adapter cable to hook up my Artist Color Panel to use in Resolve.  I have this working at home but I have the Artist Color on an Ethernet switch.  I know one of the Ethernet ports goes to an Isis so maybe I could add a switch to the other port if it's just for the office network and internet but if not I'm wondering if a USB to Ethernet cable would work.  Anybody ever used on with success?

Re: [Avid-L2] New Mojave Startup drive doesn't show when logging in from another computer?

John, fyi & jicymi

Apple depreciated AFP (which is the successor over AppleTalk) since a bunch of year:

"Notable current compatibility topics are:

• Mac OS X v10.4 and later eliminates support for AFP servers that rely solely on AppleTalk for communication.
• Computers using classic Mac OS can connect to AFP 3.x servers, with some limitations. For example, the maximum file size in Mac OS 8 is 2 gigabytes. Typically, Mac OS 9.1 or later is recommended for connecting to AFP 3.x servers; for versions of original Mac OS prior to 9.1, installation of the AppleShare client 3.8.8 is required.
• AFP 3.0 and later is required for network home directories, since Mac OS X requires POSIX permissions on user home directories. Single sign-on using Kerberos requires AFP 3.1.
• APFS: AFP is incompatible with sharing of APFS volumes but is still usable as a Time Machine destination in High Sierra. "

(from Wikipedia)

However, Samba-shares still pose different vulnerabilities and the Infinity Loop's decision to abolish AFP and move everything over to SMB is a different discussion not to be taking place on Avil-L2, imho.

[Avid-L2] New Mojave Startup drive doesn't show when logging in from another computer?

Now that I've upgraded one of my startup partitons to mojave when I log in from my old iMac I see all the drives but the new APFS start up drive.  I can log in from my mac pro back to the iMac which is also Mojave and I see all the drives.  When I try to change permissions in get info it says I don't have permission but I am an administrator.  Not sure why it works one way mac pro logging into iMac but the other way iMac to mac pro no startup APFS drive shows up?

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU??? Now Installing Mojave Issues Some Solutions Hopefully the final Saga soon to be on Netflix

Today I heard back from OWC support and here is what they had to say, "Thank you for contacting Other World Computing.  Unfortunately, since the Accelsior E2 is two proprietary blades in a permanent RAID0, it cannot be upgraded to Mojave."  Given I already had it working I found this to be incorrect information.  Once again I'm left with the feeling nobody really understands everything about all this stuff.  If it had not finally booted up after 25 minutes of a black screen I would have just taken OWC's word and figured I needed to use HDD or single SSD for the upgrade.  Fortunately it finally worked.  Today I found the proper driver for the 10 gig card and with Zelin's help installed it.  I'm surprised it wasn't already installed as it's the same driver for 10.13.6 and above.  I guess the way it installs in OS 10.13.6 there needs to be something different once it's upgraded to Mojave.

As suggest Mojave seems to handle the Metal better and I can now run the entire  Geek Bench 5.4.0 Metal GPU test with out it stopping at Feature Match test.  So far so good and I pulled up a Resolve class project that had optical flow that use to vaporize my computer with 980Ti 6GB.  Now it plays but just a few frames at a time until cached or rendered.

Maybe the ridiculous price for the Radeon Sapphire Pulse RX 580 will be worth it if I can chug a bit longer on the latest Resolve but I'm going to stick with Resolve 16 for now given the tracker was broken during our class last week with Resolve 17.1.

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU??? Now Installing Mojave Issues Some Solutions

So after figuring things had halted I powered down holding the power button, this after the first restart of the Mojave install had the monitors active, not in sleep, but displayed a slightly elevated black on the screen.  I booted up again with the chime and it got back in the same active monitor with black screens.  I did some more googling and was in the middle of emailing OWC support to see if they knew if my Mercury Accelsior SSD PCIe card had any known issues upgrading to Mojave my mac pro sprung to life and the end of the progress bar appeared.  I had also found along the way that the Mojave installer wouldn't let me start it if my expansion chassis was on.

Now with it up I checked for updates and it found some it took forever to shutdown during the restart to install updates and I even did a manual power down just because it appeared hung.  Finally the updates finally finished.  I then found that my QNAP would not communicate to the mac pro.  I suspected it might be a card that isn't compatible with Mojave because I had picked up a card that would still work in 10.12.6.  To test I booted back to my 10.12.6 startup partition and the QNAP worked.  Now as if I hadn't had enough fun I could no longer see my new Mojave partition in the startup drive because it's an APFS format and 10.12.6 won't read it.  Once again F Me Skipping.  I finally put my back up of the original OS 10.13.6 startup partition into a cradle with eSata to connect directly to my Mercury Accelsior eSata ports and I was able to choose it as a startup disk while in 10.12.6.  That let me boot to the craddle drive and being 10.13.6 it saw the new Mojave APFS partition and I could choose it in startup drive.  So now I'm Carbon Copy Cloning the 10.13.6 Cradle drive back onto my second partition of the Mercury Accelsior so I won't have these issue.  I guess I'm going to have to get a new 10 gig card for my mac pro expansion chassis that will work with Mojave and hopefully 10.13.6.

If only these were billable hours.  ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU??? Now Installing Mojave Issues?

So after the first restart as part of the Mojave install it seems to be stalled I waited 25 minutes and the screens have turned on but just show black.  I held down the power button  and then restarted and it's back at the same state.  I have an OWC Accelsior PCIe SSD 1TB partitioned into two 500GB Mac OS extended partitions.  In Googling around I found this"
- AppleRAID, RAID & SATA III PCIe cards note:

You can't upgrade your firmware if you are booting from a RAID array or from a SATA III card. The point is that need to be a single SATA device (HDD or SSD) connected to the Mac Pro southbridge SATA ports, not a RAID, not a SAS, not a PCIe device, not a PCIe SATA controller, not a PCIe AHCI blade. Open your Mac Pro, remove all RAID controllers, PCIe SATA cards, PCIe AHCI or NVMe M.2/U.2 drives, disconnect all RAID drives, including AppleRAID, and use a single SATA drive connected into a backplane native SATA port. Keep it simple and use Apple defaults when upgrading Mac Pro firmware.
Btw, Mojave don't boot from SoftwareRAID/AppleRAID arrays or any hardware array that present to the OS as multiple disks.
It's uncommon but sometimes you can't upgrade from PCIe AHCI and NVMe blades too, so use the same advice if you have any problems while upgrading the firmware."

Does this mean my PCIe SSD in slot 3 will not upgrade firmware or not upgrade period?  It did the initial Shuty down and hold the power button okay and it started the Mojave install for the first 10 or so minutes but now it appears to be dead in the water after the first restart.  I've backed up all the drives so maybe I can relaunch in target mode to somehow access the PCIe SSD where one partition is untouched.  Not having a boot screen is a real downside here.  Maybe ultimately I can install a spinning drive in one of the slots and upgrade that then bounce it to my PCIe SSD through Carbon Copy Cloner.  Boy this is fun.

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU??? Now Installing Mojave

So it just gets better and better.  I had an installer for Mojave on the desktop of my old iMac that worked on it.  I put it on the desktop of my mid 2012 mac pro and launched it and got this screen:

Note the only option is to quit.  I have the RX 580 so WTF???  After finding an old link to how to get old OS installer I clicked on it and there was the link to but it didn't want to play nice.  I finally found out the link only works when launched in Safari and I was in FireFox.  F me skipping.  So I trash my install file and launch safari and go through the whole download from apps store and when it finally launches the installer after down loading I get the same screen as above.  This is how I know someone up on Infinite Loop Lane in Silicon Valley is out to mess with me personally.  Then I realized that my expansion chassis was on to I shut down and powered it down and then restarted.  Then I got this Screen:

So I follow those instructions and when it rebooted I relaunched the Install MojaveOS and now it seems to be working although it just restarted and I don't see anything on the screen so who knows,  It chugged for about 8 minutes and then restarted now without a boot screen I'm not sure.  The monitors have turned on but they are black so I'm going to wait for a while to see what happens.  I'm just glad I can share all this fun.  ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU???

[Edited Message Follows]

Yes I'm still running High Sierra but am planning on upgrading to Mojave so eventually I can run Resolve 17.  That was another reason for getting the RX 580 as I couldn't move to Mojave with nVidia GPUs.  I'm about to carbon copy clone things and then upgrade to Mojave.  I don't know why but I always struggle to find legacy OS installers.  I even had to do the set the clock date back several years to install High Sierra.  Apple just does this crap to piss me off.  I know for a fact it's personal.  Steve Jobs is still giggling at me from 6 feet under.  ;-(

P.S. In my Resolve refresher class on Resolve 17 last week we confirmed that in Resolve 17.1 the tracker is broken.  It didn't work for the instruction on a Trash Can and for one of the students who had a 16 core new mac pro.  I didn't even try as I was on a 2013 iMac which was the only computer I could upgrade to Mojave at the time.  Imagine that a Resolve release with a broken tracker.  I don't know if it's platform specific bug but come on that would be like a major NLE manufacturer coming out with a replacement Title Tool that didn't work for years and still sucks after that and I know that would never be allowed to happen.  ;-0

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU???

Are you still running High Sierra?  Metal is much more mature and improved in later MacOS versions.  I know under High Sierra,  I got some glitches in Premiere that went away when switching from Metal to Open CL for the Mercury Engine.  After upgrading to Mojave, I could use Metal with no issues.  Something similar may be happening with Geekbench.

So assuming Feature Match test is drawing too much power and that causes it to quit the test but not crash the Geek Bench 5.4.0 program why does it work correctly in Open CL?  Ultimately I thought when the GPUs ran out of power they just throttled back performance but didn't necessarily crash the process running.  I've been told the RX 580   needs 225 watts which it has from the multted dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin supplying 150 watts and the PCIe buss with another 75 watts.  It seems to point to something quirky with Geek Bench 5.4.0 as I've found 4ish posts about similar crashes.

There is also a graphic/compute switch on the RX 580.  Default is Graphic Mode which draws more power.  I saw in windows there is a control panel interface where you can set the mode.  I'm not sure where the switch comes into play.  The mac drivers are supposedly in the OS so I see nothing in system prefs.  Bottom line the card seems to work I'm just wondering if some sort of Pixas Mod would solve this testing crash?

I also found in my googling one guy said he had an RX 580 with an Apple EFI he got through Mac Vid Cards.  Here is what he posted:

Here's my system specs:
Mac Pro 5,1 Mid-2010 dual CPU model, BootROM 144.0.0.0.0 (latest)
MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 with all updates

So now it works on my 10.13.6 startup and 10.12.6 startup although in 10.12.6 the GPU is not identified correctly but it does say it's supported.  I suppose this is because OS 10.12.6 was before the RX 580 so it's not in whatever look up table or whatever the OS uses to identify GPUs it supports.  It is correctly recognized in OS 10.13.6 falling into some metal family support.  Here is the info just in case anyone is tinkering.

Re: [Avid-L2] Where is my dream GPU???

Thanks for the info I've ordered one of those.  I was able to confirm on the MacProUpgrade FB group that the Sapphire Pulse requires 225 watts so that will work with 75 from the PCIe slot and 75 Watts from each of the 6 Pin mini connectors on the mother board.  I should be good to limp along for a while longer.

It would work for what you want it to do. The price is just ridiculous for the power of this card - and its original retail price.

And if you really miss boot screen, google OpenCore MacPro. I've had this on mine for a while and it brings the boot screen back, and also hardware acceleration with the modern Radeon cards.
