[Avid-L2] Re: SSD recommendations

For the record, this is the reason I suggested possibly considering an HP-blessed system drive (if it is a new and fast 6G drive):

If you are looking to patent before peddling it around town, try legalzoom for the least expensive way to get through the process (they have forms-based and pre-priced help from affiliated lawyers)

John,
I can't help with a Patent Attny; but with two large dogs I might be interested in buying a tennis ball washer?

Drink a lot of Beer and go to the PVC section of the plumbing store with an open mind. You'll probably come up with a better design than I did. ;-)

[Avid-L2] Re: SSD recommendations

I would strongly recommend only buying a SSD intended for a System drive from HP. The tolerances are quite critical in HP's Workstations.

I have personally tried several high-end SSD drives that could not be mounted as either the System drive -- or even as D, E, F -- in my Z800.

And that incompatibility experience has been perfectly replicated in my new Z820.

For the record, the HP SSD drives come with a 3.5 to 2.5 carrier.

Your search for an HP-blessed SSD might start on this page:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13379_na/13379_na.HTML

And, the part number for the carrier alone is 675769-001, which you can find here:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=675769-001

Good luck.

Hi Wilson,

My problem is those drive bays are taken up by a DVD burner, BluRay burner, and removable SATA drive mount for archiving. :-(

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: SSD recommendations

Terry,

When you mention "the Z800 carriers" I'm assuming you mean the
four internal bays on the bottom front, which indeed only are designed
for standard 3.5" drives. I believe the HP-approved mount for a SSD
is their "Hard drive carrier assembly - For inserting two SFF drives
into optical disk drive bay 570577-001"

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=es&cc=mx&taskId=125&prodSeriesId=3718645&prodTypeId=12454&objectID=c01721583

http://www.amazon.com/HP-570577-001-SPS-CARRIER-SFF-570577001/dp/B003FFYIR8

This mounts a pair of "Small Form Factor" drives in one of the
"Optical Disk Drive" bays. There are three of these ODD bays on the
stock Z800. The top bay usually has a DVD drive, and the next two
usually are covered with blank plastic plates.
