[Avid-L2] Paragon on MBP 10.5.8 and Avid?

On my MBP OS 10.5.8 Core 2 Duo 3.06Ghz running Avid MCSoft 4.0.5.4 I just installed Paragon latest version this week.  I remember people saying they had problems trying to run NTFS volumes with Avid media on Macs.  I haven't done any heavy lifting but having taken my PC backup drive of my current offline project and putting the project on the desktop I seem to be running fine with a FW 800 enclosure using 15:1 S media.  I took some shots and scrubbed and shuttle as well as the sequence and no burps.  Running the same sequence on my older Imac I would get main bus thread errors when shuttling too random and quickly.  Haven't hit it hard but I'm curious what were the problems people were having?  I suppose higher resolutions could create a bottle neck but so far it's seems viable for offline work.  Anybody care to share their previous issues with Paragon?

I don't want to save time, I want to export to ProTools so that it may
access all original metadata. PT is rather deaf to Avid metadata, and is
pretty OK with BWAV metadata.

[Avid-L2] Saturday Night Drive?

Why is it I find myself spending an exciting Saturday night voltage checking drive enclosures?  Never mind that but here's my quandary.  I have to NexStar 3 FW/Esata/USB2 drive enclosures.  One model has FW 800 the other FW 400 everything is identical even the Wall wart power supplies 34W +12V, +5V 2amp max for each.  One drive is Hitachi and the other Wester Digital.  I've tried every combination of enclosure and drive and one of the power supplies won't work with the Western Digital no matter which enclosure.  Pinning out the voltage on the power supplies are within .01 volt on both the 5 and 12 Volt outputs.  Testing under load conditions the Western Digital peaks up to 15 ish volts before the drive spins up then it drops down to 12.10 Volts.  At the same time the 5 volt starts at about 4.77volts until the drive spins up then rides at 5.1 volts.  With the one suspect power supply the Western digital doesn't spin up so the 12 volt side spikes
up to 15 and stays there and simultaneously the 5 volt hangs around 4.7 volts.  The Hitachi drive works on all power supplies and enclosures.  These power supplies are identical according to the part number etc.  Just curious what other might think is different about the Western Digital drive.  It seems to need a little more umph to spin up.  Is this a marginal Western Digital.  Nothing critical on it, probably still under warranty if I could find the paper work.  Anybody know how strict WD is about warrantying drives?  I sure don't see anything obviously different in the power supply level on start up using the VOM.  I had expected to see one of the power legs drop significantly under load but that's not the case.  Sure seems strange a drive would notice a difference of .1 volts to keep it from spinning up but S#$@ happens.  This is more of an academic question but I'm tempted to return the weaker power supply but I think it's the drive more
than the power supply.  Neither drive is more than 6 months old.  I welcome any speculation from the collective wisdom.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC recapture Hi Res

AFAIK it only means material which was brought forward from other
projects will also be relinked.

For example if you are working on a weekly show and the opener and
teasers were built separately...

[Avid-L2] Re: MC recapture Hi Res

I hadn't really thought about it but when Avid relinks based on Tape Name and Time Code does unchecking the button for "relink only to media from the current project" bypass the part of the Tape Name that is the project name? I know after decomposing and upressing a sequence I can still go back and relink to the original offline media. Since I always uncheck the aforementioned button it works. Logic seems to suggest if I leave the box checked the decomposed sequence would only want to match to media that has the online project in the tape name. Does this make sense. Time to play around a bit.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Change QT frame rate

QTchange can't do this, but FCPauxTC reader can.(Well, the helper app. that
comes with it.)

But, more important, you don't want this. FCP people need it, since BWF
import in FCP sucks big time.
It works fine in Avid, import is fast, no quality loss.
Why on earth would you want AMA trouble to save on non-existing import time
of just sound files?

Bouke,

Can it do it the other way around, wrap BWF into QT?
Thing is: with MC5, we could possibly link to the original BWAVs through
AMA, rather than import them. Just thinking out loud.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Change QT frame rate

Oh joy, I did not know this would work...

But i must say, this is NOT the best video app. on the web.
It does it's job, but FFmpeg / Mplayer and AviSynth are the true Video App
Gods on the web.

QTchange is just a QTpro front end / GUI / batch tool,
and I'm just a poor soldier in a huge army....

)Another new cool feature of QTchange is that you now can extract QT to BWF
in 24 or even 32 bit depth, but that's more important to FCP people, since
Avid outputs BWF by default.)

QT Change (one of the best video apps on the web) does the job on QT files,
so maybe export, change the file and reimport.

[Avid-L2] Re: Change QT frame rate

QT Change (one of the best video apps on the web) does the job on QT files, so maybe export, change the file and reimport.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC recapture Hi Res

AH, now i get it.
You're right, master clips will NOT relink, but sequences WILL.
(and imho a sequence is worth more than a master clip.)

Bringing back the master clips can be done by dragging them from the Media
Tool,
or a decompose of the relinked sequence with insane handles. (without extend
beyond master clip checked)
Then those offline master clips will relink to the fresh ingested material.

For the OP, this should be good enough for rock 'n roll, not?

Yes, a subclip will relink. I stated that. But a masterclip won't relink
unless it has the same start TC, same duration and same tape name.

[Avid-L2] OT: Re: secret pana menu

I think you need to contact Steve Wozniak for those. He claims on numerous Prius' he owns he can duplicate the acceleration problem. He's convinced it's a software issue but Toyota wouldn't take his calls. Do a google for the whole story. My friend was at a media conference in Washington when Steve spoke and at the end of his time he started talking about the Prius problem.

RE: [Avid-L2] Re: secret pana menu

Thanks a bunch Terry, I got in. The only difference is that this remote has
no "recall" button, so I experimented around (last, return, etc,) and found
that the "info" button did the job.

I long for the old days when you could buy something and actually know about
it, mess with it, without insults like "No user Serviceable parts inside" or
a straight-out refusal by the manufacturer to give you information about
your own property.

Hey Lou,

Place all the P2 folders in a parent folder. From there load the
parent folder into Avid. By doing this it will see and spanned cards.

[Avid-L2] Re: secret pana menu

Found one to try:

Panasonic TV's after 1996 can be set to "Serviceman Mode" with the
following remote control sequence:

-select the SET-UP icon and select CABLE mode.
-select the TIMER icon and set the SLEEP timer for 30 minutes.
-press the ACTION button twice to get out of the menus.
-change to channel 124.
-adjust the volume to minimum (0).
-Hit the VOL down button on the TV itself (not on
the remote) and a red "CHK" should appear in the upper corner.
-press the ACTION and VOLUME DOWN buttons (again, on the
TV, not the remote) you will toggle between AGING and SERVICEMAN modes.

[Avid-L2] secret pana menu

Hi folks,

Talking monitors again, I am aware that the Panasonic Plasmas have a "hidden

look it over, but Panasonic Tech Support refuses to reveal the code, as if
their customers are dumber than they are. Does anyone have that info
available? I realize that damage can happen through misuse, but I am
careful. This particular unit is a TC-P42G10. Nice for the outer office.

[Avid-L2] Sorenson QT framerate

Source file is QT Ref 1920x1080i/29.97; using Squeeze to output QT H.264, 720x480/29.97. But when I open the resulting QT, it says 29.93 in the inspector. How is Squeeze giving this weird framerate when I've set it up to do 29.97?

[Avid-L2] Re: Change QT frame rate

If the clip has audio the IgnoreQTrate True does not work. Once again boned by that low frequency video, a.k.a audio.

30th Birthday. Also, let the game start (or click Insert Coin) and
man the arrow keys - that's an actual functioning PacMan game.

Very cool (and about as much into gaming as I get).

It works, as long as the QT has no audio.

Re: [Avid-L2] Change QT frame rate

I don't know if this has been answered. I think I have done this with
cinema tools. make a copy of the qt movie, open it in cinema tools,
and change the frame rate to 25.

Were these created with the title tool? If so, in V4 just open the sequence
in a 23.98 project which will create a 23.698 duplicate sequence. Mark in to
out, and "recreate titles". It will rebuild them in your new 23.98 sequence.

[Avid-L2] Change QT frame rate

We have some 29.97 H264's that we want to import at 25. We want it to be
slower but have no interpolation. I thought IgnoreQTrate true did this but
it doesn't seem to.

Any other way or what are we doing wrong. I think cinema tools won't do it.
