I'm trying to display running ink numbers using the Timecode Burn-in

generator effect. This would be similar to what I would see in the source

monitor by selecting in the source monitor "tracking information menu":

Source, V1, Ink.

Some of the video tutorials I've watched imply that this is possible

without actually showing how to do it. In the effect Display parameters,

I'm choosing "Source Timecode", "Current Track (I've also tried V1)", but

there is no "Ink Number" column.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks,

David Poole

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: I will pay Frank Capria to bring back the Interface settings

Well said, Job. I don't know if you were being at least a little funny in your reply but it's absolutely true.

What was so great about the previous level of Avid UI customability was that each individual craftsman (editor) could arrange his tools and work bench the way that worked best for him/her. You could make it intuitive for you.

This lack of customization is one of the things I detest the most about FCP. It's so bright and overloaded. It stands up and shouts, "Hey, look at me!" like an insecure kid desperate for attention. But Avid always let me create a world in which the story was dominant, not the tools.

Does this mean I'm mentally undisciplined? I don't know. Maybe. We all have our individual strengths and weaknesses. But Avid always allowed for that and so helped the editor be the best they could be.

Okay, I'm over-philosophizing here. But I don't care. Because this is my career. And it's important.

[Avid-L2] Re: MXF files from nanoflash device

We've just been working with mxf files recorded on a Nanoflash. We had some problems that were related to the bit-rate the files were recorded at on the Nanoflash. We have plenty of files that exceed 2GB and they import and play fine in Avid. This should help: it's from Greg's post in another thread:

Avid uses our files just fine, if you follow the following rules.

> 1. Use MXF not MOV (Quicktime).

> 2. Use Long-GOP if recording 18/35/50 Mbps.

> 3. Use I-Frame Only if recording above 50 Mbps.

All bit-rates work, when using I-Frame Only.
We try to tell everyone these rules and it is probably in our manual.

We have been waiting for a long time for Avid to increase the size
of their internal buffer.
The problem is that their buffer is too small to hold a whole Long-
GOP, if the bit-rate is above 50 Mbps.

When the editing or playback stops, Avid looks in the internal
buffer for the start of the GOP. If using above 50 Mbps, they can't
find the first frame of the GOP, resulting in the
"decompStream:FillBuffer FIFO too small for read )," error.

So, when using nanoflash XDCam codec, stick with 50Mbps for now, or
use all i-frame, until Avid and the Nanoflash guys get this sorted
out. I was able to use .mov via ama with identical results to
the .mxf, for what it's worth, but in the end, transcoding to DNx was
the only way to make the footage useable. Except, of course, the
nanoflash is often used in conjunction with the on-board HDCam
recorder - consequently there's a backup tape! This is a great hybrid
workflow for people who want a tape element AND file-based workflow.

I would add to that list the ability to have a different color for the highlight between the in and out points and for the clips selected under Segment mode (SmartTool arrows that is).

[Avid-L2] MCsoft upgrade going up from $495 to $695 for boxed set?

I just found out that the upgrade price for MCsoft is going up from $495 to $695 on July 10th.  Maybe this is common knowledge but it was news to me.  This info came from a VAR.  Just thought if you're on the fence this might help your choice.  Glad I checked when I did.

[Avid-L2] Question on Timecode generator effect and ink numbers

I'm trying to display running ink numbers using the Timecode Burn-in
generator effect. This would be similar to what I would see in the source
monitor by selecting in the source monitor "tracking information menu":
Source, V1, Ink.

Some of the video tutorials I've watched imply that this is possible
without actually showing how to do it. In the effect Display parameters,
I'm choosing "Source Timecode", "Current Track (I've also tried V1)", but
there is no "Ink Number" column.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks,

David Poole

[Avid-L2] Re: Trouble stopping a playing sequence (sometimes)

I recently installed on a pc a drive for my intuos 3. I had to go back several versions to something like 2007 or 2008. I was being stubborn so I went through two or 3 more recent versions. I might be on that system again in a few weeks and I'll check which version.

I can't specifically remember if I had this issue with that driver, but as soon as I get the opportunity (probably next week), I'll uninstall the current driver and install November's & see what happens.

I end up pressing the space bar a bunch of times while clicking in the time line both amongst the clips (Smart Tools not enabled) and on the TC bar at the bottom of the timeline. At some magical, random point, Composer gets the message and stops, then spends a little time executing all the crazy commands I just gave it. I don't remember if this happened in an HD project or not; currently I'm working in a mostly SD format project, but this problem also happened in full SD projects in v4. Any thoughts?

There is this nice little file that Nora wrote that sits at the VERY top of the patch site that are " Instrucitons for using the Patch files". Talks to PC versus Mac and all that jazz. A good read....

The MC 5.0.0.1 update fixes that. Apparently should never have been in
there. Developer option only.

RE: [Avid-L2] Scary analog Mojo issue

Unfortunately these systems are RARELY "off-shift". We're a TV station and
the system is one of our 2 Mojo based News Cutters. There is almost always
somebody using it.

I think the original turnkey system was designated a Model 20 - with
the Model 400 offered as a "BYOMac" affair.

There was a short-lived Model 900 as well, but I'd have to dig through
my files to tell you what the hobble-factor was.  It was the early PCI
era though.

Oh, and a Model 9000 happened at some point around V7.  I remember
getting a dongle updater for the 8000 rig but don't remember exactly
what it enabled.

Lots of marketing shenanigans happening around the time Symphony
"you'll never see uncompressed video on a Mac" V1 appeared and MC "now
with uncompressed video on a Mac" V8 was announced a few months later
(which ultimately shipped on the G3 "Beer Cooler").

[Avid-L2] Scary analog Mojo issue

Has anyone else had an analog Mojo get so hot it melts the little rubber
feet? The unit is normally just sitting in its stand (upright) and the two
upper feet have melted and run down the "bottom" of the box. The thing
still works btw!

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: I will pay Frank Capria to bring back the Interface settings

Why is everyone looking at the interface?
You all are old enough to remember a 'normal' editor that you used to edit
while looking at the client monitor.
(I still do a lot of work that way, but i can type blind using 10 fingers.
Not even needed, i only need one hand to make a rough cut...)

I think four simple fixes might address most of the issues:

1) Add a text brightness slider.
2) Add the ability to option-click the highlight colors to call up a
color-picker.
3) Return the button separation choices.
4) Make the Smart Tool floating and docking with the option to hide it.

In a 1080p 23.976 project, the Record monitor displays frames slightly
earlier than the client monitor when playing media with audio at faster than
3x speed. When I stop playback, the Record monitor jumps to the frame
displayed in the client monitor. Has this been fixed?

[Avid-L2] Re: Trouble stopping a playing sequence (sometimes)

On the PC side, you have to go back to the driver from summer 2008. Here is a thread on this:

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Trouble stopping a playing sequence (sometimes)

Yes, the Wacom is the culprit. I think sometimes the USB extender can be the source of the issue. I know that one place I typically work, some suites support the Wacom and some don't, but they're all using the same OS, the same MC version, and the same tablet drivers. All their CPUs are remoted to the machine room, so at least in that case, it seems there's some issue with hardware, perhaps cable length or proximity to the control room.

Hmm, as a matter of fact, I do have a Wacom Intuos 3 and have updated the

drivers as they became available beginning with the first Snow Leo-compatible

driver from Nov. 25, 2009 (we bought my Mac Pro/Adrenaline at the end of

December, which is when I started using MC4). I can't specifically remember if

I had this issue with that driver, but as soon as I get the opportunity

(probably next week), I'll uninstall the current driver and install November's &

see what happens.

Thanks for the advice! I'll post again here once I've done that and had some

time to kick the tires on the old driver.

You need to use an older wacom driver. The last time I had to go for a two year

old driver on a pc. There has been a bug with the newer wacom drivers that

makes avid keep playing when you hit stop and it's somewhat random. I've had

the problem on pcs not on macs.

Re: [Avid-L2] I will pay Frank Capria to bring back the Interface settings

I got my first Avid in 1993 and IIRC it was 5.0.

Not sure what "model 200s" means. I remember MC400, MC800, MC1000,
MC4000, MC8000, & FC, but no model 200.
