Re: [Avid-L2] exports taking very long

sounds like your sequence has a clip or render at a higher resolution. Make sure everything is at 220 when you do your same as source because if there is a hint of 220x or 1:1, software will take the highest resolution and export it.

220 is current sequence.  Mix down and QT ref worked fine.  But everytime I go to conventional export same as source, it boggs down.  Still testing.

Re: [Avid-L2] exports taking very long

So I decided to run a couple of quick tests.  Here are some of the result I am getting:

Hardware: MP trash can, 8 core GPU, 32GB RAM, AMD D700 GPUs, Gtech 8 TB Thunderbolt drive read/write.

Software:  OS X El Cap 10.11.4, MC 8.5.2

Sequence:  1080p 29.97, containing mostly 4K FS-7 (XAVC-I) talking heads shot over green screen, reframed, color graded & keyed over 1080p moGFX BGs with some text builds imported from 1080 P'shop layered files (up to 8 layers**).  I removed all renders before the tests.

Sequence duration 5:50.

Export A:  QT DNxHD 145 (no mixdown), export time 7:15, so about 20% longer then real time.
(Exporting at DNx220 took 7:30, only 15 seconds longer)

Export B:  Mixdown seq. video to DNxHD 145, time 3.45
 Export QT SAS, time 2:35
 Total time 6:20.

Add in the time to dupe the sequence, cut in the mixdown and delete the original video tracks, and Exports A & B take about the same amount of time.

I have used Export A on lots of complex timelines with no issues.

Incidentally, watching Activity Monitor, the Avid doesn't appear to use more then about a third of the CPU power when exporting, and about 2/3 of the CPU when doing a mixdown (don't know how much is being handed off to GPUs in either case).

When I use Premiere or Adobe Media Encoder, the Activity Monitor shows all 16 (virtual) cores nearly pinned.  Score one for Adobe.

Hope this helps.

- Rich

**In Avid, with a foreground track of 4K XAVC-I with reframing, color grade and GS keying over moGFX and with 5-6 layers of Photoshop titles on top, and a couple of audio tracks using track processing, my rig will play at full res (green video quality) including through an AJA T-Tap to a client monitor in real time with no sweat. FWIW.

Exporting un-mixed-down video uses the QuickTime engine which is ancient now.

[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Invalidated Mac OS Installers

I just went through this.  I have a utility a tech suggested that would make a bootable USB of the installer.

In the past I have used the USB stick with success after being told to just set the computer date back as the installers had a time out and even if I to the 8 hours to reload the installer from the apps store or wherever it comes from it would still balk unless I set the date back.

Just last week I tried to use a 10.10.3 USB installer and it wouldn't work complaining that it couldn't verify the drive.  I still had the installer on my desktop and that one worked after I set the computer date back a ways.

Don't know why the USB was squawking but moving the system clock worked.  It really points to how unprofessional Apple has become.  Seriously the inability to have a viable installer that is bootable is a recipe for disaster.

---In Avid-L2@yahoogroups.com, <danlist@...> wrote :

This is for all you folks that keep old Mac OS installers around on USB
sticks etc. -

Yesterday I tried to install an older OS onto a laptop. No matter which
version I tried, the installer quit, saying it couldn't be validated.

It turns out that back in 2016 Apple updated the certificate for
installers so that those downloaded before Feb 14 2016 no longer work.

The very easy workaround is a terminal command using the utilities on
the installer to fool the computer into believing it is back in 2016
before the change.

Details can be found here:
