Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!
With a Yahoo account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2, you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar Various Avid events are in the Calender. If you have an event you'd like posted, pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests, Help Wanted, Freelance Listings and For Sale sections. Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas. Job Postings will remain up for 1 month. Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files- The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes. Check back often for changes.

Photos - Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain. Photos will be posted after moderator approval. Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Links- Various helpful links, including direct links to Avid CPR releases can be found here, also the link to the archives.

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

I think the Nitris DX does not work with the Trashcan, regardless of whose PCIe chassis you use. It is an issue with the Nitris DX that will not (cannot?) be fixed.

Change the project format to interlaced.
Use field stepping to check the source isn't interlaced. Check the mixdown as well.

Re: [Avid-L2] 8K to YouT ube

Ok, some progress:

The Premiere plugin is way slower than FFmpeg, totally unusable for normal production work (On this kind of job, to 8k…).
And, besides that, it can only output VP9 to WebM.
Now, for YouTube a file must be injected with metadata (No clue what that actually does, but without it, YouTube does not see it as a VR clip.)
The app. to inject does not accept WebM. It only wants Mp4 or QT.

So, since the data rate for me is not that interesting;
(Youtube will re-transcode always, my transcode is only to get a file fit to upload from my relative slow connection.)
I've tried  FFmpeg VP8 instead. That renders twice as fast as VP9, and produces a 8K file that is accepted by YouTube.
(Render time is now 25 times slower than RT on a 29.97 fps clip, and I can probably speed that up as it's only using 30% CPU.)
Again, this is ONLY the transcode from a 8K Prores file to an 8K in-between to upload!
For those interested, this is the 8K test video

Steve,
With the GoPro rig, you end up with 6 images of 2.7 K, with a fair amount of overlap.
After the stitch you have an 8K movie.
Now, when you watch it in a 360 player, you have (horizontally) about 100 degrees of viewing angle, that's 8k / (360/100), so roughly 2200 pixels.
That is even less than the screen resolution of a modern smartphone. So yes, in theory I should be able to see the difference between 4 and 8 K, as 4K only has less than half the pixels available on the screen.
(Do note, I have a GearVR viewer, without it it's probably a pointless exercise.)

I have no clue how sharp the image really is. During the stitch, here is a huge amount of warping done on the images to compensate for the poor fisheye lenses.
(Granted, that is done very well, but probably at the cost of sharpness.)

Next, there is a huge amount of color correction. In my test video the main cam was looking towards the sun (just hidden behind a part of the building), so the end result had the main objects close to black.
I take it that adds a lot of noise / garbage as well. (But again, the stitching software does a very decent job considering the huge differences between the cams, and I have not yet found a way to get the source images into Resolve prior to stitching.)

And then, the player scales / warps the image during playback. In RT (It's amazing that a stupid phone can play it back already, but doing an RT DVE is really requiring horsepower, so I take it there is rough rounding as well..)

I very much doubt 8K will be used in real production for my clients (education), as the render times to VP9 are too painful.
(Way over 4 hours for a 5 min. clip, that's just transcoding from ProRes to VP9, the stitching / rendering itself takes a lot of time as well...)
On the other hand, they have enough bandwidth to upload ProRes (they are a university), and have YouTube do the conversion.

I'll see what the Premiere plugin does next…

I thought they had to be 4:3 and that 2.7K was the largest source files.

But, maybe the stiched image is huge. What are you watch 8K on to see the difference between it an 4K?

[Avid-L2] Progressive export Upper Field?

I have a 1080p30 project.  I have a clip that is DNxHD 145 1080p30.  Progressive project, progressive clip.  I do a video mixdown to DNxHD 145 (even tried DNxHD 220x) due to some media on the timeline being long GOP... And then I export SAME AS SOURCE.  Just this patch for this one section with that clip.  And the export, when I check it, says UPPER FIELD first.  And I see interlacing on it.  HOW does this happen? How can I export a progressive clip, from a progressive project, with NO field dominance?

Thanks

Shane

My trash can has been the best and most trouble free computer I have ever owned (knock wood), and hence worth the price.

Not going PC because I've just been mac too long.
My questions is, can I replace with the 2009, 2010 or 2011 macpros? I think there are no more of this build after that. Are there any issues with these later models or do they all run Avid about the same?
