Easy, we do not do political humour here. You will wake up Jeff and
he'll get grumpy.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Dede Allen interview on Fresh Air tomorrow

But in Russia that IS the actual title that you get. If you are the actual picture editor then your title is literally "Director of Editing." Simple "Editor" then refers to assistants.

Re: [Avid-L2] Dede Allen interview on Fresh Air tomorrow

On a similar note, you might enjoy hearing today's NPR interview with
Tippi Hedron (still kickin) star of "The Birds".

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126241831

She comments on being thrust into the feature film world by Hitchcock,
the master manipulator. While grooming her to be his next "Grace
Kelly", he took total advantage of her.

At one point, after having live ravens hurled at her for 5 days, she had
a nervous breakdown on set. I'll never look at those scenes of her in
the attic the same way again.

Unlike Dede, Tippi's career was derailed when she dared to challenge
Hitchcock's authority.

In a behind-the-scenes video I saw for a film where she was credited as the editor, it didn't look like she was ever at the controls. She was "directing" the edit session, with another editor actually running the Avid. This is unlike other A-list editors who actually "drive" themselves.

Re: [Avid-L2] Dede Allen interview on Fresh Air tomorrow

Thanks Jim. Enjoyed it.

I noticed Dede mentioned the Avid once, but kinda dodged the question
of "digital technologies", focusing more on the old school film/tape
techniques. I would have liked to hear this answer.

Clearly she broke new ground in a male dominated industry and was
prolific for 4 decades. That takes balls, talent and people skills.

Listen up you young pups! There's still something to be said for the
experience of physically splicing your media, or honing your chops on
years of medical/industrial films.

Gonna go see if I can rent "The Hustler".

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: No More Sony OLED?

Terry, most sources claim that OLED offers better energy efficiency than
any other displays. As they mature, this should not be an issue.

Even in the television energy-sucking capital of the world. ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: P2 issues...stitched media offline

It already does link up...no relinking needed. That's the funny
part. At work, it is all offline, but at home, it is there. But I
can't reveal file, or find the clip, or find the media in the media
tool.

Consolidate was aces...there the media is. Now maybe I can manually
FIND the other stuff, searching for media names.

I meant, copy your work machine edit sequence to a new bin. Move that bin to your home system. Relink at home where the media exists. If it's all there and matches the correct cut, then consolidate and move both media and sequence back to the work system.

Oooooo! That's sounds good! But then I need to recut the interview
on the work machine. No biggie really, it is only a few small bytes.
Or, I wonder if I can then relink the one on the work machine to the
consolidated media?

Shane,

I don't know the answer, but maybe this is a viable workaround in the interest of time.

1. Copy your sequence and relink back on your home system
2. Consolidate the cut (with the media) on the home system
3. Move that back to your work system as the new consolidated cut with new media

[Avid-L2] P2 issues...stitched media offline

OK, I posted this on the Avid forums, and have gotten a couple suggestions. But I thought I'd try here too.

http://community.avid.com/forums/t/83156.aspx

Basically (if you dont want to read the link)...

I have an interview that was shot with two cameras. I cut back and forth from those cameras to cover the pull ups I did to the interview. Both interviews were shot with P2, both are 30 min long, so both consist of multiple P2 files stitched together. SO...one of the interviews went offline. Not FULLY offline, the first of the P2 files is there, as I can see video for a few minutes, then I am hit with MEDIA OFFLINE. We have had issues with media files going offline, and found that a possible cause was more than 5000 files in the numbered folders in the MXF folder. We fixed that by making new numbered folders (3, 4, 5) and moving files there. And many previously offline files have returned, but not this interview.

NOW...interesting thing is that I have a copy of the media on ANOTHER set of drives at my home office. And this media is NOT offline. I have the whole interview clip. So how can I find ALL the MXF files that make up this clip so that I can bring those to the work drives? OR, how can we re-import the missing files into the work machine from the P2 card.

This is one failing I see with Avid MC...or maybe a lack of knowledge on how this is done. In FCP, you import the footage and it wraps it in QT and stitches the files together...into one large QT file. ANd if the file went offline, all you have to do is highlight the clip and hit BATCH CAPTURE, and FCP will reimport the footage, using the same clip in FCP but making a new QT. And this all syncs up. How can you recapture P2 in Avid so that a stitched clip will be whole again?

I have already trashed the databases...that brought a lot of media back online too...but not this one interview.

OK...odd thing. I can SEE the clip in the timeline. I can load the clip from the GROUP CLIP I made of it and the A camera. But if I try to click FIND BIN, I get an error.

"Could not select the clip (CLIP NAME) in bin (JJ INTERVIEW). The bin display setting are not selected."

So I can't locate a clip to do a REVEAL FILE. AND...stranger yet...when I open the MEDIA TOOL and search for the clip...all projects, all drives...IT ISN'T THERE! I can see it as part of this group, but I cannot find the separate clip, NOR the media on my home system.

Now, one suggestion was to match back to the original file in the group, then make a subclip, and try to reveal file from that. But Avid doesn't let you reveal file from subclips, group clips, or sequences.

Any ideas guys? I would REALLY like to have this second angle.

I don't remember whether this was answered at the time, but I just noticed this the other day. It appears to be that the Autosave is kicking in while you are in another app or in the Finder. When this happens, it gets hung up and you have to Quit. If you notice, when you do Quit, the Autosave appears to complete its function and then MC shuts down.

reluctantly pay $10K for it. I'll never pay $40K for it.

That is the best theory for pushing 3D into the homes. But there is plenty of evidence to suggest it is too tiring, sickening, etc. to stare at 3D for extended times. Since most have only watched a movie in 3D, there isn't enough common experience of doing extended 3D viewing to know whether folks will eventually work through this.

Okay, assuming you have 40K to blow...

The monitor looked as good as Martin's (as yet unshipped) DPX monitor. My guess is they are doing something similar. It is very deep and has some serious fan action going on.

The thing is, I think 42" is a bizarre size. It's not large enough to put on a wall for the client unless you have a small room. And yet it's too large to have up close for a CC monitor.

It will have the ability to dial up different looks to emulate home viewing. Sort of like Auratones in an audio bay.

Did I mention its 40K? :-0

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: No More Sony OLED?

My scientific approach matches Terry's scientific approach. Asking
random people at NAB what they thought. I had one person who said
they were going to do it because they had clients demanding it, but he
didn't want to, because he knew it was just throwing money at
something that wouldn't last. Everyone else was also against having
3D TVs...even sports guys.

Not in the side by side comparison at the tv logic booth. Their best
LCD was not even close.

Much brighter, crisper colors, perfect off axis viewing. Amazing
really.

Limitations aside, I would expect this 15" OLED to be a popular on-set
monitor for directors or engineers. Later it could be destined for
high end laptops.

Imagine the burn in potential there.

My kids might not put on the glasses to watch what you guys do for a
living but they use the TV to play on the Wii as much as to watch
Mythbusters.

I reckon the 3D TV will enter my front room in order to facilitate 3D
game play.

Whether it is worth TV companies transmitting 3D content is anyone's

RE: [Avid-L2] Re: No More Sony OLED?

The ultimate flatscreen is the one you paste onto the entire wall like
wallpaper, while watching "no-glasses" 3D images of raving full-sized
wing-nuts. It is powered totally by any ambient heat in the room that is
above 0 Kelvin, and has no on-off switch. (The other three walls have to be
padded.)

There are still serious problems to overcome in OLED.

They burn in. So it's back to the old CRT or the current plasma days. Watch out for those show bugs, tickers and TC windows.

They have a shorter life span than an LCD. They are only going to last us a few years with our usage.

The colors don't all burn out evenly. Apparently the blues burn out much faster. This is going to make keeping them balanced very tricky.

They eat more power than an LCD, which is an issue with the lunatics running California. They have already outlawed plasmas out here.

Totally agree on the concept. However, I don't see the average consumer screaming for better images. In fact, most can't seem to tell when an SD image is on an HD set. In the case of the TV Logic, the "glass" was thin but the required housing was still the same size as always.

> So far, in my unscientific polling, I have reached a big fat zero.

I personally don't see a big consumer demand for HD. My point is that the "push" will come from consumer electronics companies, because 3D is "the next big thing" for them. That's why I said they want to "force" 3D onto the consumer market.

Dig down into the money behind 3D movies and 3D channels and see whether or not the production costs aren't being at least partially subsidized by manufacturers with a vested interest in 3D.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: No More Sony OLED?

Still, gotta wonder what Sony knows that the others are ignoring.
There's more to this than not having a plant to build them in. For them
it would be like pulling the plug on a movie because they couldn't find
a stage.

And yet they were showing the 7" production model at NAB.

Doesn't really matter though, LG has taken over this market by building a new plant and producing the 15". They are claiming 30" next year.

Sony, Marshall and TV Logic were showing professional OLED monitors at NAB. The Sony's were small field monitors, but the TV Logics were awesome-looking. $6K for 15".

[Avid-L2] Re: Broadcast Facilities Support Engineer London UK

Thanks for the kind words :-)
yes we've been going now for over 25 years and I've been teaching technlogy for VET for almost all that time. Avid since the very early days.
Amazing how many names I see on here and elsewhere.
We teach Avid and DS of course and FCP but the most fun is the VET courses of course. Just finishing the technology element of our 3D course.
So hopefully I'll see some of you soon even if it's just an inverview.......

Yes. No change.

Single format. Matches project. It's 1080p imported from a Canon 5D, which I presume may be part of the problem.

That would be a deal-breaker. Note that the problem does NOT show up on Full Screen on either side of the card (either monitor).

Tried that.

Tried that.

Such as? There are no external devices connected, such as a Mojo or external drives. There are four internal drives. The video is DNxHD145 playing from 2 internal striped 7200RPM drives. Same clips (at ProRes) are fine in FCP on the exact same machine from the same media drives.

Working on it. No suggestions yet.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Monitor tearing

That's a qualified setup. Odd to see it on the S/R monitors, more
common to see it in full screen. There is a bug documented there.

I have NOT seen this yet on 4.05 macs, so can we assume you have noodled
with all the video display settings (Delay, Open GL, Scaling,..).

Is it multicam or mixed format material? Native to the project raster?

Could just be overloading the system. When stressed, the system will
rob the confidence monitors of horsepower to give it to the I/O stream.
You could try

- lower monitor resolution and see if the issue is related to GPU
capacity.
- Flop the monitor settings too.
- turn off any timeline settings and tools that normally choke things

If you're only pushing healthy single-stream, plain vanilla HD footage
you might be looking at a storage issue or an attached device
conflicting with the video card.

What does Avid have to say? Did they offer you any console tricks for
this, like the prerender command?

My media didn't need rendering. It's random. It will come back. Avid has acknowledged the issue to me. Being worked on.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Agreed. We all could for that matter.

To add a ittle more perspective, Apple just blew past Band of America,
GE and Microsoft (gulp) to become the # 2 largest company in the SP index.

If you are a stockholder you are trying your damndest NOT to hit the
sell button right now.

If you don't own it, you can at least be thankful that APPLE is helping
to float all boats in the current market, including Avid's. Our US
economy, our federal treasury and our industry would be much poorer
without it,
