Re: [Avid-L2] ArriRaw Crashes MC 2018.4 - Help!

For there to not be a simple, turnkey, in-Avid, happy AMA link to all flavors of ArriRAW (with painless transcoding) is kind of a scandal. Alexas are only the most popular cameras for high-end cinematography on the planet.

I transcoded to Avid .mxf DNxHR HQX 10 bit but it showed up as DNxHR 444 in the Avid bin. I don't know if that is different than HQX but it worked.  I had to create a custom preset for the 2880x1620 to render out to that size.  Perhaps there is a way to just render out to the native size of the source clip in Resolve regardless of timeline settings but I don't have the experience with that.  In Resolve I set to assist using reel numbers and had the reel numbers come from the file name.  That way in Avid the Tape Name is the file name so it's easy to play along.  At first I didn't choose assist using reel numbers and choose the Resolve Avid AAF preset.  That probably could have worked but I noticed the Tape Names in Avid were something like msmmob.01, msmmob..02,  I've seen that behavior before from stuff transcoded in the field.  I guess if I imported the AAF it would work but I was just letting Avid create the media data base and dragging it into a bin.  When I saw this I then imported the AAF and then the Reel numbers changed to something more normal but not as obvious as using assist using reel numbers based on file names.

After a little research I found that initially only 3 software programs handled Arri Raw but now it's more like 12 or so.  As far as I know Avid had an Arri Raw plug in a while back and it may have worked then but it is not compatible with current Avid Media Composer.  It didn't work with 8_9_4 or later.  Not sure which versions it worked for but I think the last version for Avid was 1.5 for the ama plug in.  I wasn't going to back Rev Avid to get access.

Given the Arri 3.5K footage is less than UHD even the free version of Resolve should process this.  I have an expansion chassis at home with two Titan X GPU's and Resolve was processing about 16 frames a second.  This was with a usb 3 external drive.  I bet if I had taken the time to copy the camera original to my internal 3 way strip raid it would have cranked faster.  I did find I could play the Arri Raw in Resolve and it would stall along the way playing back from the USB 3 drive.  As a test I copied the media to the internal after I finished the transcoding and I was able to get 23.976 playback without stalling from my internal raid on my mid 2012 macpro 12 core 2.66 GHz 64 GB ram.

The problem clip transcoded to prores 444 at about 6 frames/sec.

I didn't have any footage that didn't work so I can't speak to if there are flavors of Arri Raw that just don't play nice.

I expect it either a statement here or via Avid's next release notes on 2018.6 release.

Hi Marianna,

obviously there is a setting in AVID's Title Tool that is a) Console only toggle-able and b) user specific - but not project-tied:

command is:

—-
HDTitleFilter
—-

there is 1) no obvious toggle (like "HDTitleFilter: true") - it's just typing this command into the console and without any feed back (true/false)

-> ends up with full sharp HD-titles (instead of softened but downcovertable HD to SD-titles - > please ask the devs, they confirm)

there is 2) no icon/sign/whatever that tells you the actual state (however: it's even not a system thing, it's user-dependable) - so in conclusion:

I employ an (educated with this information '"HDTitleFilter"-type in console) editor and carry this editor's work to an assistant with his own settings - we are lost and end up with the smoothened "ready for low-res" titles.

This is unacceptable imho and should be changed in the next possible release:

like in the Media Creation page, global setting and if set then transferable inbetween changing user setting.

Thank you so much for listening, Marianna,

let me know if you need further elaboration on this

Best

Do other folks know about this?

Shouldn't it also be part of Import Setttings instead of buried in the Console?

And at this point, since I think it was to make things work better in SD, shouldn't it be set by default to "off"?
