You don't. Simply make sure to "Save Current" whenever you rearranged the
toolset or workspace you are in. Also make sure how your workspaces are set
up. They can be set up to remember and save every change you make, or to
revert to the initially saved setup whenever you activate it.

And dude,.... relax.

I've tried both - including all permutations of linked / unlinked /
manual update / automatic update / etc.

Whatever I do, it takes virtually no effort for first the S/R, then
the CC, then both modes to end up back on the second monitor... and
then trim and FX mode get stuck there as well. I drag everything back
to the primary monitor, switch from Edit to CC and it's all back onto
monitor 2.

I just want to Shut. Everything. Completely. Off.

I really want to use Script Sync too, so I guess I'll have to move
this to one of the MBP laptops.

Ugh.

And another question: anyone know how to adjust the audio
"monitoring" output levels properly? Currently it seems to be some
lazy-assed code hack that ties the MC level adjuster directly into the
Mac's *main output* volume. WTF?

[Avid-L2] Lightworks

For those interested in other options, here's the link to the new Lightworks web page:

http://tinyurl.com/yylpbum

EditShare is shortly going to sell it as a turnkey system with support, but also make the software available as Open Source. I don't know the complete specifics, but in reviewing the app at NAB, there has been quite a lot of development over the years, so it's very much up-to-date with other NLE software. I believe it's compatible with Windows 7.

I've no vested interest in this, but it sounds like an interesting approach and I know others have mentioned liking it when they used it in the past. Its fan base certainly has more Oscars under its belt than some other NLEs, which shall remain nameless ;-)

[Avid-L2] Re: MXO2 LE

The bottom line is that for the home user, they probably don't need I/O as they don't have an SR deck laying around. So the mini is great.

For the facility, you have one Adrenaline HD or Nitrs DX or MojoDX, which is your I/O station. Everyone else has a mini as it for monitoring only.

This is still a great first move by Avid, though the lack of 23.98 support has me concerned.

So I guess the 'feet wet' theory is a little naive. And, I'd rather

The AJA & DS comparison it's exactly valid. This is an OEM version of the XENA/KONA card. AJA also makes OEM versions for Media 100, Autodesk and others. Although the hardware is the same, there are software and firmware differences. You don't just install a stock XENA card from AJA and get it work as a full-blown DS. For instance, in Smoke (Linux), the same card is used, but only for ingest. Output is through the NVIDIA.

Re: [Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

I spent some time at the Matrox booth to learn this. To get the
skinny. And I know the product manager.

Re: [Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

Avid has gone out of their way. Matrox is writing special drivers to
enable it to work with MC. And only the mini. And yes, it does stink.
Baby steps I suppose. They might open it up later.

Re: [Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

I'm not angry Greg, I just really disappointed that Avid remains somewhat reactive rather than getting more proactive. This move will retain a lot of existing customers such as TV stations, but it does not do much to win back those they already lost to the competition or the new school who cut their teeth on Final Cut Pro. I'm betting Avid would capture almost every MXO2 owner if they made the monitoring work across the whole MXO2 series. Mind you, I have no idea what those numbers would be. Maybe its not worth it.

Don't get me wrong - I am really impressed with the MC5 offering and I still prefer MC hands down. I was hoping to see a way to get back into Avid from inside an organization that abandoned it and now runs 100% Final Cut Pro. The last Avid was retired at the end of 2009. This release is so close to what I would need to make it happen at least in part to give the choice back to those who still prefer Avid. We still have some dongles from the soft versions. Anyone need Meridien hardware? We have a stack of it sitting in a bomb shelter outside Helsinki.

And Job, you really made me laugh!

Re: [Avid-L2] A little trip down Avid memory lane

Yes, we've come a long way. I started as an assistant in version 2.something back in 1990, so I guess I hit my 20th anniversary sometime this spring. Back then Avid was ported to a Mac IIfx, a computer whose speed was measured in megahertz, and all the media was digitized to Panasonic optical floppy drives, each of them about the size of a CD, and holding a gigabyte. I used to hold one in my hands and think "Wow!" We were doing a feature length HBO documentary, "Earth And The American Dream," and we captured a room full of archival film on 3/4" source to those things. I remember at one point we called tech support because we kept getting duplicate media messages, and the poor tech support rep asked how many bins we had. The first assistant replied that we had about 750, a which point there was a long silence on the phone, and the guy said "Actually, most of our customers have only one bin." That was true at the time, since Avid was mostly used for spot cutting then.
The thing crashed and crashed and crashed. As part of my job, I had to log each of the 18 or so crashes a night and document what I was doing when it happened. Meanwhile, there was an Avid button on lying on the desk with the slogan "Change your mind without losing it."
It's nice to see the photos of these guys, because I remember once the fellow in charge of maintaining the system played for me a little QT movie that you could access through some menu or other; it showed all the developers in a group, with an applause track underneath. He asked me why I was staring at them so hard, and I replied that I wanted to recognize them if I ever met them on the street.
Back then I might have slapped them; now, I would hug them.

This is a little over a year old, but it's a unique perspective on
Avid's earliest days from someone who would certainly know - Bill
Warner:

http://billwarner.posterous.com/some-photos-from-the-early-day

I was thinking about this along with a couple other anniversaries this
past week: the 40th anniversary of "Houston, we've had a problem." and
the 29th anniversary of the launch of STS-1 (Columbia).

Being just shy of my own 20th anniversary as an Avid user, I've seen
(and tested) a whole slew of stuff - good, bad and otherwise - that's
come down from the LPT (Land of the Purple Triangle). While certainly
not in the same early adopter class as Basil and Alan (The True
Original Users), I can definitely remember the sheer excitement of
those very early days (OMG: Dissolves!) and not really being too
concerned with what the next release might bring or how much all this
stuff cost (A mere $10k for an upgrade to "CD Quality" 44.1k audio?
Fan-frakking-tastic!). The whole damned thing was just so cool it
didn't matter what Avid did (or didn't do). Of course that only
lasted a year or two :)

It amazing to see what today's "normal expectations" have become. Not
saying it's bad, mind you; just kind of stunning while considering
how far things have progressed in such a relatively short time.

The MXO mini uses a different driver to work with MC5 than it does for other uses.

Right now it's only the Mini from what both Avid and Matrox told me. Like AJA, Matrox ships driver software for all the MXO2 products as a single package. Within it are specific drivers for the various models. Until some folks with other MXO2 products try it on a release version of MC5, we won't truly know. Pressure from the user base got it this far and I'm sure additional pressure will open the crack a bit wider.

Remember that this is in response to two needs. The first is for simple file-based monitoring without needing one of the DX units. In fact, MXO2 Mini won't ingest under Avid control. In other words, if you primarily work in RED, P2, XDCAM, HDSLRs or ProRes, then you only need the output and this gives you that.

The second is educational institutions who are budget-challenged. They won't get DX units, but have the same need as above. Furthermore, if you want them to invest in MC (over FCP or PPro), then you have to provide a cost-effective solution. Mini solves the technical and financial issues and provides a way to continue to "grow" the next generation of Avid editors.

Re: [Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

For now the MXO2 Mini is the only version that supports MC5. It's
what Avid wants and will allow - for now. Down the road, when Avid
opens up an SDK that all 3rd party hardware vendors can use, you'll
see all versions of MXO2 supported, as well as cards from other vendors.

One of the really nice features of MXO2 Mini for Avid folks is the
HDMI color calibration tool. It allows you to use an off the shelf
HDMI equipped flat panel screen for color grading and more.  That can
save you another thousand bucks or more on glass!

This is a BIG step forward by Avid. It's just one of many. AMA
support for ProRes and DSLR quicktime files is HUGE!  Avid, Matrox &
Canon did a mini event at the end of the show on Wed night. They were
showing off how well this all works together.  It's really quite
impressive.

Avid is moving in a new direction. One that will benefit editors on
every level.  At the FCPUG event I walked over tot the Euphonix table.
They had already hacked up their MC Control surface to work with MC.
Very cool!

Avid was one of the biggest stars at NAB. All the folks who worked
so hard on this release deserve a big round of applause. The industry
is talking about Avid, and Avid editors are excited as well. It's
about freaking time!

Re: [Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

Has anyone TRIED an MXO2? Avid doesn't officially support ATI cards,
either, but they work.

Secondly... Why so angry? This the first time avid's ever supported
3rd party hardware- it's a huge can of worms. This seems like they
are 'getting their feet wet' by offering this monitoring-only
solution. It's not an I/o solution, it's a monitor connector.

If you like, capture in fcp and edit in avid via AMA. Will you be
able to output from fcp using a refernce movie? Probably not, but who
knows.

Re: [Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

Avid would have to go out of their way to make MC5 not work with the other flavours of MXO2. From what I can determine, they all use the same driver and software. This makes it far less attractive because I have to continue to work in Final Cut Pro for some projects, but where I have the choice, I would opt for Avid.

And this is not about the money. It's less than $500 to have a Mini in addition to an LE. You can always unhook the Mini and plug in the LE, but what a pain in the butt workaround; AND FOR WHAT?? TO BE CLEAR - I am not asking for input through the other MXO2 variants; we just want to be able to monitor output as will be possible with the Mini. I'm sorry, but if this is true that an MXO 2 LE will not work, this is just typical Avid MO; nothing has changed - Welcome to XpressPro II.

Maybe I'll just stick with Final Cut Pro. There are no neutered flavours of FCP or Premiere for that matter.

Dennis

PS, It just came to me; I think I know their game - SDI output on the MXO2 LE would mean you could do finishing work without a MOJO BS, There is only HDMI on the Mini. THIS IS PATHETIC AVID. Once again, WELCOME TO AVID XPRESSPRO II. This will not sell one more Mojo BS or Nitris DX. It just means Matrox will sell two boxes because you can always export a QT from MC and lay it to tape from FCP. I have already done that and may just write the definitive tutorial on how to do this.

And don't some Avid fanboy chime in with how much Avid boxes used to cost. That was then and this is now. Now, hardware is cheap. We have choices.

[Avid-L2] MXO2 LE

Anybody have any insight into whether or not the MXO2 mini is the only
flavor that will work with MC5? I have a good line on a MXO2 LE, and don't
know about risking the money if there is a prohibitive incompatibility.

Re: [Avid-L2] Frank

I second that whole heartedly!
I feel a new energy coming from Avid. After being told that it would take years to re-write the crumbling code base before a single feature could be added, important new functionality, like support for multiple frame rates, is here. And it sounds like Avid is having its strongest NABs in years.
From the MC fan base, thank you Frank!
