OK, so about today's topic: as you may know, back in 2019, MFG released a new version of their product Q software which introduced a revamped user interface, or, as they call it, NEW_UI. Now I have installed this version on my computer right here. So I will open my applications folder and open the application…. there we go. As you can see, the splash screen indicates we are dealing with version X of product Q here.

So I will open this demo project….. yes, there it is….

OK, so as you can see, from the new Main Folder, I will now open a work file that I created. You can see it shows up in the new Main Folder, which will look slightly different from how you may be used to seeing it appear in earlier versions."

Yada yada yada.

As far as I remember this is happening only with (too) long bin names. There should be a "switch" to disable background bin save editing a config file, please read this for more information https://community.avid.com/forums/p/196214/877576.aspx

Re: [Avid-L2] PBS Frontline

The team worked remarkably well together. I think it helped that Brian Trugilo, and Rick Manoogian were both good editors and not egotistical. Brian was lead editor and we mostly followed his lead. Rick picking up a lot of the slack. At FRONTLINE I'm the supervising editor, so when I wasn't cutting a scene from scratch, I was fielding the notes from the executive and editorial staff at FLN.

I also had the ”master sequence” while building the show, and made all the exports for review. I did probably the majority of the sound design too, but on occasion I would pass that master off to Brian for music and final picture review.

Are you behind a firewall? If so, try to momentarily disable it to see if it it helps.

There is a console command that will stop Background Bin Saves.  But from what I've read it has to be ran every time you launch MC and will not be permanent.

What I don't know, but suspect because I did run that command earlier today, is that it may also stop AutoSave, which I do not want to stop.  I suspect this because I made a change to a bin and then stepped away for over 20min and it remained unsaved when I got back.

Thanks for the insight Steve! And congrats.
How do you approach a show like this with three editors? You segment it among yourselves? Curious about the creative process as it's not often I get to share work.

We had three remote workstations. all with mirrored drives. the media wa delivered via Sony Ci with bins. Every morning we divided up the tasks and then reviewed our work at the end of the day. Finally all sequences went through my avid before sending the sequence and media off to the WGBH OutPost to conform, color correct and mix.

this was all done in 30 days with slack running full time to keep in contact with other producers and editors

Re: [Avid-L2] The very slow close

Slightly related, I think, is the time for MC to quit and relinquish RAM on a Mac. Looks to me like the 2020 Beta releases are much better than the 2019 releases. Its important because in a classroom situation, I have to ask 15 students to quit and log out before the next lot head into the room. Compare this to Resolve which quits in a snappy manner.

[Avid-L2] Closed Caption Monitoring in Media Composer

Working from home...  Trying to add multi-language 708 closed captions.
I received a closed caption file that contains captions in English AND
Spanish.  I imported it and put it on the data track, just as I would
for a single language file.  Seems to work fine but the display in Media
Composer only shows the English on cc1, not the Spanish on cc3.  I don't
think I have a way here at home to check captions on an external device.

Is there a way to switch between different caption streams in Media
Composer?  Currently using MC 8.9.4, Windows 10.
Or is there a (free/cheap) media player software that would be able to
play an exported MXF file so I could check captions that way?  I tried
VLC but it seems to only want to play subtitles.  Many Thanks.  --J.B.

the shadows of my home office and trips me when I get up from the
computer.  --J.B.
