Re: [Avid-L2] Deck Control with Blackmagic UltraStudio HD Mini

Actually, let me answer my own question for posterity.

Roger, the Ultrastudio /does/ handle deck control -- which I needed
since Keyspan no longer works with M1 macs.

Our working seats are still old v8.6, running on 2009 Mac Pros. But
since we are planning to upgrade, I went ahead and got a new
subscription so I could get Avid support now. It took a few days of back
and forth, but the upshot, as of Jan 19, 2023, Blackmagic's Ultrastudio
software 12.4 seems to have a bug/issue preventing it from handling deck
control with Avid. We rolled back to 12.3, 12.2, 12.1 and, finally, 12.0
-- which works.

If anyone else has this problem, I hope Google search somehow leads them
to this thread -- but, again as of January 19, 2023, you need
Blackmagic' Desktop Video v12.0 to get deck control with an M1 Mac
running Monterey 12.6.1 with Avid MC 2022.12 and/or 2022.10.

Avid support for the win.

Thanks!

Re: [Avid-L2] Deck Control with Blackmagic UltraStudio HD Mini

Surely the Ultrastudio only deals with video and audio I/O? Deck control
is direct independent. I use a Keyspan USB to serial adapter and some
old serial cables.

[Avid-L2] OT Re: HEIF, HEVC, HEIC Alphabet Soup of Codecs WTF???

Makes me reflect fondly back to the days when all you needed was a piece of charcoal and a cave wall to finish the production deadline.

Of course Ugg and Ogg would constantly debate the benefits and downsides to the various "charcoal-decs" - which was better at fine detail, contrast, more accurate gamma, longevity...  oak, pine, birch, hickory.

No end in sight.  Well, except our own.  ;-)

[Avid-L2] HEIF, HEVC, HEIC Alphabet Soup of Codecs WTF???

I was given a still image that my "mediainfo" program showed as HEVC.  I figured this is from an iPhone.  Couldn't get it to open or import into Avid.  The OS saw the picture in the desktop window but the icon was for a terminal document.  I tried adding the extension .HEVC but no luck.  After a bunch of googles seeing HEVC mention with HEIC I finally added the .heic extension and then Preview would open the picture and I could then export to a tiff or jpeg etc...

So here is my new list of codec related acronyms that I haven't worked with much that I will surely forget by tomorrow and have to regoogle again:

HEIF= High Efficency Image File Format,  (why not HEIFF???)

HEVC=High Efficiency Video Coding also known as H-265

HEIC=A file containing HEVC encoded images

So all this results in the following sentence in Wikipedia:
" HEVC is an image and video encoding format and the default image codec used with HEIF. HEIF files containing HEVC-encoded images are also known as HEIC files. "

So how I stumbled onto adding the .HEIC is beyond me but it worked for the still.

How would I contact the MPeg Group or SMPTE to suggest all these files be renamed "Fred."  I knew a dog named Fred and he was a nice Chocolate Lab and his name was easy to remember.  Can we all just agree to call these files Freds?  It would make me very happy.  Some days I really miss Bob Z's shotgun.  ;-)

Plus 101 for Ccc. Good for backups and good for cloning drives before changing the OS.

I use it in a primitive manner and just have an external HD that's got several partitions and I just CCC to one of the partitions with date info. I've never trusted incremental back up, for no real reason at all, so I go full Sigourney on the back ups and Nuke the back up drive from orbit before cloning. I will erase the partition and do a full CCC bu. I know this is a tremendous waste of time but it's unattended and I just like starting with a blank palette. There is a lot of ways to set up tasks for automating the back up and it knows to just back up what's changed as far as I know but again I just stay in my primitive lane. I don't want to let any Binary Aliens loose in my computer. ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: File Backup App (not for media) - Windows users

Posted with no intention to hijack this thread, rather to expand its utility for Windows users who might be drawn by the non-OS denominational subject line.

While they do not make an Apple product, for almost a decade I've relied on GS RichCopy 360 Enterprise to perform manual and automated data backup and migration with excellent performance, a good selection of tools/options, quick responses to product questions and no issues to date.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: File Backup App (not for media)

Hi Kenton,

You have a very safe set-up — excellent. I use DropBox, too, but have used used it in a limited way (only backing-up certain folders. I think I'll be changing that, in light of my recent 'adventure.' I'll definitely checkout your suggestions.

RE: Time Machine . . . I thought I was protected, and clearly I was not. I used it because it was right there and brainless to set-up. At this point, I don't see that it does what you would assume it does (yep — my bad for assuming anything). My advice is to stay away from it, unless it offers some protection that other apps do not.

For anyone following this thread, I'll report back after looking at the several solutions that have been recommended.

Thanks Kenton — much appreciated!

Cheers,
Benjamin

I use CrashPlan Pro as a cloud backup. It's $10 per month per device for unlimited storage.

Additionally, I use ChronoSync to make backups of my Avid projects folder, et al. You can configure it to run a number of ways, but I have mine set to trigger a backup 5 minutes after it detects a filesystem change. This means that 5 minutes after I hit save, it makes a copy of whatever .avb files have changed since the last sync. I have it going to a folder on my Dropbox, and my Dropbox folder is also getting backed up to CrashPlan.

I also recently started using JottaCloud ($9.90/month) to test it out as an alternative to CrashPlan.

I've never used TimeMachine and don't plan to.

Tod, thanks for all that info, including giving me the links — super helpful!  You're the second person to recommend CCCloner, so I'm going to take a serious look at it. Also, I'm like you; I don't store any Avid MXF media on my internal.

I'll be able to do some more focused research next week to see what solution makes the most sense for my admittedly simple needs. For anyone following this thread I'll report back.

Thanks again Tod!

SuperDuper is the other old school, widely respected backup for Mac. Cheaper and a bit simpler, but when I tried it eons ago it couldn't do something I needed, I don't remember what that was.

These are traditional backup programs.

I use time Machine for my system drive, but only because it's super easy, and not for individual file history. For me, it's only a disaster recovery backup. If you really want it to work as designed for individual files, you need a very large backup drive, at least three times the expected primary size. If you have a lot of constantly changing, large files, as I do (video editor), you need a REALLY large drive because versioning wipes out older files too quickly to be of use. For this reason, I don't store large files on my system drive at all and I exclude all other drives from Time Machine.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner for everything else.

What good is it if it doesn't backup stuff?!

Anyone have a recommendation for a more robust alternative?
