Re: [Avid-L2] Upcut audio

Hi Greg.
This bug could be somewhat related to the TIMESHIFT bug (see: AVID 2018.12.9 AUDIO SUITE "TIME SHIFT" Plug-in BUG) – I have seen upcuts in heads and tails of audio from not only 2019.12 but 2018.12.9.

I am too into a major project to uninstall and go back to previous versions to check.

Re: [Avid-L2] Upcut audio

Outside of Avid I've had time when the beginning of a track was silent after processing it to to create discrete tracks from interleave tracks.  Reprocessing it usually fixed it but it was somewhat random and annoying.  Probably not related to your problem but a similar symptom I've had with .movs.

Have you had me under surveillance?  Your subject line is perfect.  Nothing like modern technology to make my life, "Easier?"  Between fonts, codecs and HDR with ridiculous delivery specs and automated pixel busting it's hardly worth getting out of bed.  How's that for my spiritual message of the day?  I'm working on my sermon titled, "Fonttastrophies  of Life the Death of the Title Tool!!!"

Re: [Avid-L2] Latest MC Versions

That explains a lot, Chris.

Most (legacy policy) educational licenses were NEVER upgradeable, understandably.  A long time ago, there was a one-time upgrade from the Avid DVXpress line, which had an educational option (this was when the regular Media Composer did not have "subscriptions," and ran over $10k.  It was a smart move on Avid's part: Most students were shooting Standard Def DV (4:1:1 color sampled instead of 4:2:2, and 5:1 compression at 25Mbps).  Once they graduated, if they were using the software for commercial purposes with at-home, laptop-type businesses, Avid allowed them to migrate and then get upgrades, all via Dongle.  DVXpress had to be 'handicapped' and not have a lot of the advanced features the educational or commercial Media Composer had.  Once it was discontinued when DV fell out of favor as HD was all the rave, Avid could've just killed it – to their credit, they allowed users to migrate to a full-fledged Media Composer, commercial license, and the price was reasonable.

Re: [Avid-L2] Latest MC Versions

This was from my Avid sales rep;

I did some digging and 2018.5 is considered a legacy version due to the recent changes that we have in our licensing scheme. This means that all new purchases can only run from version 2018.9 and up, this is for software licensing. If you need to run versions prior to 2018.9, they will need to use a software dongle.

My 8.5.3 license was an educational license, which has since expired.
This may have had something to do with my options, going forward.

1. Depending on how you had your licensing, 2018.5 "requiring a dongle" may be incorrect.  With perpetual license, I have been able to go back all the way to before Avid MC 5.5.5, if need be.  This was a dongle license, but was converted to an Internet connection license, when I moved my dongle to perpetual on a different machine.

2. Again, depending on your licensing, 2018.12.3 and 2018.12.9 have been good; as well as 2018.11.  Before that, 2018.9 was pretty stable in my situation.

Switch to a SD project and OMF as the Media Type in Media Creation settings. Then import a image, create a title---whatever it takes to create media.
This will force Media Composer to create the correct folder and build or rebuild the database.

Re: [Avid-L2] How do different New Blue Effects end up linked after promoting Avid Title Tool Effect to New Blue?

So I spent 15 minutes typing a reply to further help you, and then booted Avid to get a screen grab to further help you, and the computer crashed.  I thought I was safe because I copied all the text I typed into a buffer, but it's gone.   :(...    And I don't have the time at midnight to re-type everything at this time.

As I stated earlier, the TEMPLATE reference to previously-saved title pages is inconsistent.  You found it under VIEW, but it won't always be there.  And it often doesn't even work!  You can unlink a page's reference but when you change a page, you'll find other pages changed.

The one function that seems to work more consistently is the SLIDE button I previously mentioned, but it defaults to SHARED and you have to manually move it to the opposite side before typing.  Forget, and you could save the title referencing something before it.

I opened one timeline, and this SLIDE button never did appear, in many titles on the timeline.

I opened another, and magic – it is suddenly there.  Luckily, I was able to re-do the screen grabs now and send this to you before yet another system crash (TPro crashes Avid a lot lately, but I couldn't even get TP7 to work right (NewBlue FX offered me a free copy to help their coders de-bug, as I give them 2am access to my machine to poke around and try to re-emulate issues).  I asked to go back to TP6, with hopes that they will continue to debug it with me, but they probably won't spend resources for that and move their energies to fixing TP7.

Below, upper-left, near ANIMATED TITLE's pull down menu, the SHARE/UNSHARED slide switch does not appear.

I open another title, and voila, it is there!
And this is for both STILL or ANIMATED title – NewBlue FX's engineers tend to always turn STILL off and select ANIMATED, even when the title is static and never moves.
I believe they do this so they can see the timeline under the Compose window.  The SHARE/UNSHARED slide switch is there, regardless of STILL or ANIMATED.

12.8 was the best middle-ground for me. Avid stability? Is that a thing?

Only recommendation I'd make is: 2019, is just not ready for prime time.

Hi all,

I've been away from MC for a while and need to play with a sequence from a very old project (MC 5 or 4). I created a new project in the latest version and imported all my old bins and sequences but the sequence and footage files aren't linking. The old footage were omfi files. Is there something that I would need to do to have the project recognize and link back to those old files? Is there a file folder structure that I need to follow? Again, been away for a while and I'm slowly getting reacquainted with the software. Thank you so much for any guidance!

Re: [Avid-L2] Latest MC Versions

"Requires a dongle" is not true. As long as your perpetual license was active through the date of the release of the version of software you want to run, you can run it on the supported OS. I am not sure about subscription licenses, but I would imagine it's the same.

Re: [Avid-L2] How do different New Blue Effects end up linked after promoting Avid Title Tool Effect to New Blue?

Thank you for the info it is very helpful.  I found if in View I check title list I see a list of titles.  Many of the titles reflect various pages in my credits but not all pages.  It seems when I first started it asked if I wanted to save the titles as separate or together.  I think I chose together one time and separate another.  Through out the process it would sometimes ask to save to documents before saving to timeline.  Then it would say do I want to replace the title file.  Like it is rewriting a new project with the existing name.  I guess I don't understand the project saving architecture and what is in a project.  Is it a single title a group of titles or what.  Also I have been using copy style on a page I like then go to the next page and paste style.  This works but does this set up the sharing thing.  It only happened on a few pages and I don't know what the pattern is for when it happens.

If I duplicate the credits timeline does that break any sharing links?  I hit the help menu and firefox opened to no page.  Then I clicked another thing in the help menu and it went to a generic page with frequently asked questions etc...  This is not a fun process and I'm on Sierra but on a cheese grater so that may contribute to some of the instability I'm having too.

John,
Depending on your computer and OS, Titler Pro 7 was early tested by me (I work closely with their team in de-bugging) – and it has a plethora of issues, especially on Mac prior to High Sierra/Sierra, and on Cheese Grater MacPros.

I reverted back to TP ver 6 and found less issues.

We all wish NewBlue FX would bite the bullet and prepare a real, contextual manual that is .pdf searchable, instead of going to their default website.

The issue you have is one of training – NewBlueFX has a "convenient" way to change ALL the related pages in your present project by changing just ONE page.  This is called "SHARE."  When you compose a new title, it defaults to SHARE mode.  Inconsistently, there is a slide tab above the compose window that allows you to flip the current title page you are creating to "UNSHARED."  I do this out of habit to avoid the issue you are going through.

Sometimes, that slide tab does not appear, and you have to go to the left sidebar to try a similar, but different menu: That menu has a pull-down menu that keeps track of each page you save.  You can then reference the CURRENT page you are creating to a previous page, or choose to not link it at all.  This duality in selecting SHARE or UNSHARED pages is confusing, and hopefully was eliminated in TP 7, but that's getting ahead of ourselves.

When you SHARE or link to a previously composed/saved page, you are really saying that the previous file is a TEMPLATE.  So if you create 30 new pages and they all link back to the first page, they are now connected.  Go back and change the font style, color of the root page, and all 29 other pages change.

I hope this helps.

Re: [Avid-L2] OLD project/footage in new software.

Add yourself to your Mac HD as read/write, and in your media creation settings, make sure you don't have "Filter system drive" selected.

Randall, Pat,

Following up as now the files don't show up again and I'm getting the "no media can be written to any mounted drive. please check write permissions " message.

On my Mac HD I have system as read & write and on the OMFI folder I have me, staff and everyone as read & write.

Any advice on how to solve this?

Thanks again!!!!!

The folder name should be "OMFI MediaFiles".  It should be at the root level of the media drive volume.  There cannot be any sub-folders inside of it.  The recommended max file count is 5,000.

Re: [Avid-L2] No audio when importing MTS files into MC 2019.12

This is broken in 2019.12 using AMA (and Avid know about it). I just rolled back to 2012.11 and it works there. This is a big deal for my university as we are about to update the MC installations and need this functionality.

Does that format depend on AC3 audio? I think there is a bug with the activation of the AC3 decoder with the latest version of MC. Check the Avid forum.

Doing long-distance tech support for a producer/editor friend...

He's trying to import MTS files from his hard drive into MC Ultimate 2019.12 and it is stripping off the audio. Windows correctly identifies the audio (Stereo / 384kbps /48 kHz) Source is 1080/30 from a Panasonic AVCCAM camcorder.

This workflow has worked just fine for him in the past on other versions of MC, so he's a bit puzzled as to the issue.

If direct import is failing, should he be bringing it in via AMA? Transcoding before import?

My Google-fu is weak at the moment, a quick web search is the first thing I tried.

Any advice would be helpful. TIA!
