Re: [Avid-L2] Ver. 7 MC with Symphony Option dongle backwards compatibility?

I'm not concerned with the bin compatibility.  My understanding the latest versions of 5.5.x, 6.0.x and 6.5.x are bin compatible.  It's just the ability to run symphony versions earlier than V7 with a V7 dongle that was initially an issue because of the change of symphony no longer being a version but added as an option to mc 7.  That is what I'm trying to find out if they ever resolved the issue.  I assume if your V. 7 bin opens in V. 6.5.x then it would open all the way down to V 5.5.x but that is not something I've had the occasion to try out yet.

Re: [Avid-L2] Ver. 7 MC with Symphony Option dongle backwards compatibility?

John, I opened a 7.0.2 bin and sequence in 6.5.4 yesterday. It opened
with no real problems. 6.5.4 did insist on making a duplicate of the
sequence and upgrading (downgrading?) the effects. I did not notice any
problems but I wasn't really editing in 6.5.4, just looking at a few
things. Color correction was there but I did not have the 6.5.4 system
hooked to a good monitor so I would not have noticed if the video looked
different. The same 7.0.2 bin would not open in 6.5.2. --J.B.

Re: [Avid-L2] 7.0.2's Segment Mode

Does it emulate FCP in this manner if you turn on linked selection mode? (where the audio and video clips are linked).

I never use this mode and am not in front of a system to test for you.

As with other segment mode behaviors, sometimes I want it to do what you describe, but more often I don't. Like most editors, I have pretty set track assignments for both audio and video. Sometimes I'll move a video or audio segment to correct a patching error (if I catch it later), sometimes I'll move a video segment up to create some sort of composite, but most of the time I want to be able to move video and audio independently.

Like most behaviors that you want some of the time but not all of the time, it seems like this would work well as a double modifier triggered action. Perhaps it's time to make it a feature request?

Best,
Shirley

Working with version 7 for the first time.

When I go into segment mode, the video component of the clip and drag it from V1 to V2 (or any higher video track), the video component of the clip relocates just fine, but I've noticed the audio portion of the clip, while it does slide down the timeline horizontally with the video, its audio remains on tracks A1-2, where I'd expect them to jump to the lower tracks A3-4.

Is this right?  Is this a new thing in 7?

The vice versa also occurs.  If I move the the audio portion of the clip to a lower track, it moves just fine but the video remains on V1.  Again, it slides down horizontally just fine but I need it to jump to a higher video track like it used to in older versions.  I can work around this but it just adds several extra steps of clean up or added steps of moving the audio to A3-4 before moving video to V2.  Either way, it's a few additional steps to do something that Avid used to do automatically.

I've checked in settings and can't find the setting to disable this.  Downgrading to 6 or lower may not be an option on this gig.  Any help?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

[Avid-L2] Ver. 7 MC with Symphony Option dongle backwards compatibility?

I'm going to upgrade my dongle based symphony from 6.5.4 to Ver. 7.0.3 MC with symphony option.  I recall there were initially issues with  backwards compatibility with the symphony because of the new media composer with symphony option.  Has this issue been resolved?  If not what is the proper approach to running earlier symphony versions with a dongle blasted to MC 7 with symphony option.  I have separate start up drives and would like to be able to use 6.5.4 in a pinch or even 5.5.x for compatibility with some clients because Avid Pan and Zoom don't go backwards once updated to V 6 and above.    IIRC earlier versions of MC were fine but not symphony because of the new product consolidation.  What's a poor boy to do?

[Avid-L2] Re: Thunderbolt cards for HP Z820s shipping

I'm interested too.

I was about to pull the trigger at B&H -- but held off when an engineer who works at a popular RAID vendor suggested there might be some compatibility issues relating to T-Bolt plug-n-play and hot swap (which are apparently not an issue on Mac -- but maybe an issue with PC).

Re: [Avid-L2] G-Raid transfer speeds - USB3 vs Thunderbolt

Fragmentation occurs naturally when you write and delete data. If you write on it and never delete or overwrite anything, yes fragmentation would be minimal.
