Re: [Avid-L2] Quicktime Alpha and AMA

Clips with Alpha in Media Composer have always been a little different -
they aren't are clip as such but an effects container with two pieces of
media. I'm guessing it'd be a bit tricky to deal with that structure within
the AMA framework.

The real value of Quicktime AMA is really in support for DSLR video I think.
I can't think of that many situtations where you want access to a LOT of
Quicktime media all at once (although I'm sure the need does exist for some
people).

[Avid-L2] Dual Boot Avid Nitris DX / FCP

Hi all,
I am thinking of migrating away from the windows platform so that I can install both FCP and AVID on one system (along with AE, and perhaps Smoke)

Wondering if this is possible to do with Nitris DX hardware and AJA Kona 3 board Ideally I would also have a slot left over for eSATA card but that's NOT a deal breaker.

I would have separate boot partitions for each so that QT and other stuff won't cause trouble.

Anyone doing this? Any pitfalls I need to know about? What board goes in what slot etc etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'l be darned - I wasn't getting joy with that before, but I tried it

Hey, it's the beauty of Avid - more than one way to skin a cat (or

Good stuff Loren!

Re: [Avid-L2] Turn Fast Cue off - FOREVER?

That's a great suggestion. I went with a previous idea for now, but
may give that a go too.

Thank you for the help.

That worked. I guess I was just too stupid to think of that my self.
I've got multiple settings for a lot of settings, but I never thought
of duplicating that one. I tried making multiple channels in the
setting, but that doesn't work. Thank you for the suggestion. It
worked great.

[Avid-L2] Quicktime Alpha and AMA

I don't think that's a big issue myself. If the QT has an alpha, chances are it's a pretty short clip and so a pretty simple import. I've not used AMA in anger myself but my understanding of the horsepower required and the dangers of going all FCP with media management, there's no harm in importing as much as you can to the safety of an MXF folder anyway.

Assuming a QT with alpha can be played via AMA then at least you can look at it, check its field dominance and whether it's correct (even pop it in the sequence to play with) before importing once you're sure. For me, not having to wait for import before looking at a file in context is as much of an advantage as playing in the timeline.

[Avid-L2] Re: Turn Fast Cue off - FOREVER?

Speaking of the deck templates, only keep the ones you regularly use in the templates folder. This makes auto-configuring much faster as the system seems to look through all the templates you have every time you auto-configure.

Re: [Avid-L2] Turn Fast Cue off - FOREVER?

If you have a half dozen for so deck templates, just create templates for each one, you can probably link them to workspace layouts if you're really lazy and change them with keystrokes.

I rarely use the autoconfigure options - it seldom seems to get it right.
Instead I just strip the deck templates right down. I dupe the "Machine
Templates" folder as a backup, and then delete the templates for every deck
I don't use - so I'm only left with about 6 templates. Makes it much easier
and quicker to pick in the capture or digi cut tool (it helps that we only
have Sony decks, so they're all in the same sub-menu)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Motion effect Solution

If you are on a recent version, I imagine those clips had a Motion
Adapter effect on (green dot). If so, I think they can be promoted to
Timewarp in the Timewarp editor and then you can tweak the effect. I
haven't tried this!

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Motion effect Solution

This was the problem. Media was 1080/23.97 AVC-Intra 100 and Project
was 1080i/29.97. Motion effects would not work with this format in
that project. Neither would transcode.
Started new project at 23.97. Motion fx work. Some digging in the
archives revealed it may be a format or codec issue.

No app pref or settings-based override method that I know, but it can
be accomplished easily enough with a quick mod to the applicable Deck
Template(s) -- which are all just basic, tab-delimited text files.

On my Mac, they're all sitting in:

Applications > Avid Media Composer > SupportingFiles > Machine_Templates

For each one you want to change...

1. Dupe the original, rename as desired (e.g. "Sony_J-H3_24P.txt" >>
"Sony_J-H3_24P_SLOWCUE.txt")
2. Open in Text Edit or similar.
3. Find the line "Fastcue Foo" where Foo = "Yes", "True" or "1" (if
feature is enabled)
4. Change "Foo" to its logical opposite (if "Yes" then "No", if
"True" then "False", if "1" then "0"). Just type over the existing
text making sure that the TAB between "Fastcue" and "Foo" remains
intact.
5. Save changes.
6. ?????
7. PROFIT !!!!!

Since you Autoconfigure your decks, you'll want to get the original
version out of that folder so it won't load instead of the mod (I
don't know if they all have the SBVDeviceCode item to match template
to machine - but the ones that do will obviously not know which one
you want).

If you want Fast Cue back on temporarily, just enable it in the deck
config settings (the same way you're turning if off manually now).

You'll need to quit / relaunch the app to reload the modified
templates, and you'll need to transport and install those changes to
whatever system you work on (sorry). Petition the folks in Tewk...
ehhh... Burlington to add that item to the Deck Preferences setting
(where the stuff like "Poll Deck on Digital Cut" resides now).

[Avid-L2] Re: Motion effect

Sometimes I've found the timewarp motion effect is order dependent. Not on the system right now but I think I had to apply motion effect before a color correction effect. If a clip already color corrected I had to step in to apply a time warp. May not be related to your issue but thought it worth mentioning.

Maybe you can setup a config for each machine in the setting tab, then switch between them there.

[Avid-L2] Re: Avid embracing third party hardware?

I think AJA makes great products and the tech support is right out of the old GVG play book but I just can't back the statement, "Great technology, works perfectly"? I don't have a problem with "Great Technology" but works perfectly? Having to unplug the computer to drain the PCI buss to restore audio has been a common occurrence over the years. Driver and slot conflicts can cause headaches. It took me a long time to realize I had to manually terminate the sync input or it would lead to inconsistent genlock, granted this is now in the manual but it's only after months of troubleshooting did I find this out. No way to add pulldown and maintain proper cadence on output to tape is really messed up. On any insert edit back you get to spin the wheel of pull down at the edit point. Not so on Avid hardware. It will be interesting to see if and when AJA is on Avid if some of the problems will improve.

[Avid-L2] Re: HDW-500 or 1800?

You need to be careful to check the software and hardware versions of a used HDW-F500s. I had a rental unit once and was surprised to find the time code sense function missing. I finally ended up talking to the Sony Tech who had last serviced and modified/upgraded the unit. He had me check some of the cards for piggy back jumpers to see if certain factory mods had been done. The jumpers were there so he was confused why there was no time code sense. Then we discovered after the mods the tech had sent a new replacement board to a former owner of the deck that would have provided the function but apparently the deck had been sold to another rental company and the board was never installed. Bottom line is be vewy vewy careful when hunting used HDW-500s'.

[Avid-L2] Turn Fast Cue off - FOREVER?

I have to switch between different decks a few times a day and each
time I do an auto-config. Auto-config automatically sets Fast Cue to
on. AND I HATE FAST CUE. Is there by chance a way that I have not
been able to figure out to make the default for Fast Cue be OFF?

Please please please let there be a way. After years of this it's
just driving me nuts. And no, I won't get use to it.

[Avid-L2] OT: Did you really need to tell me that

I just love how the falling cost of gear, and accompanying influx of
people who have no idea what they are doing, has changed the way
clients think of video professionals. I just received some
requirements from one of those clients and it included the following...

"Both cameras will need to be on tripods and aimed at the person being
interviewed..."

Really? aimed at the person being interviewed? Now that's a novel idea!

"Audio will need to be of high quality and only of the person getting
interviewed and no background noise. To achieve this, crew will need a
well positioned lapel microphone."

How about we use a "Well positioned lapel microphone" and a hard wired
boom just to be on the safe side? Oh, and can you call the building
engineer now to see if he can shut down the air conditioning for us?
No we won't be to long. Yes the rest of the building might get a
little warm, but it won't be to bad.

"Clear concise responses from interview talent is required (talent may
repeat answers many times over in order to get good take)."

Hold on... belay that last order. We may be there all day. Better give
everyone in the building the day off!

However my favorite requirement was that this North American company
want's to shoot 25fps for web delivery. I am going to assume this is a
typo and they meant 24fps.

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder who they have hired in the
past.

Have a great weekend kids!

Mike

Re: [Avid-L2] transcoding spanned p2 clips

That sounds right. When I worked on Unity systems using the 'Edit
while capture' feature (or whatever it was called) with OMF Media, if
the media was chunked into small files on ingest, I recall that you
still got a lot of small files if you consolidated.

You know that's what I would have thought, but no. The Transcode
resulted in 5 pieces of video media for one "master clip" The more I
think about it, I suspect Consolodate would not do what I want
either... stitch 5 bits of (p2 sourced) video media into a single
file. I could do a mixdown but that's not attractive.

When I first started dealing with media going off-line, ReLink would
not work. After following best practices on bring in the p2 files,
ReLink seems to work but I'd really like the stuff to stay linked and
not worry about it. I'm on an oldish release of MC (2.7) on G5 ppc,
I'd upgrade to 3.1.3 if there was a firm prospect of that improving
things.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Motion effect

Oddly I was able to slo mo a qt import from After Effects. which is on
the same media drive. But none of the clips in this or anyother
project will allow a motion effect from the button or allow to drop
timewarp. There are a few entries in the Archives regarding the
VideoHoldFrame error I mentioned when switching users. But no real
solutions came out. I still don't know if that error is related to
the motion effect problem. Turned the Mojo DX off as well, no change.

Re: [Avid-L2] transcoding spanned p2 clips

I think, like Job said, both options will generate media. I had some trouble with spanned files when using AMA. Random bits where offline. In the end I turned off AMA and did it the old way, import P2 to bin, consolidated the spanned ones, and after that back to AMA again. It worked.

Since both methods create new media, I'm pretty certain that (as long as you
use MXF), it will create single files.

[Avid-L2] transcoding spanned p2 clips

Though I've read up on best practices for working with spanned p2
clips, I still find they have a bad habit of going off-line. (so
that part of the Master Clip goes off-line) Since such a master clip
is made from many media files, will Transcoding (from DVCProHD to
DNxHD) also consolidate to a single DNxHD video clip *or* do I have
to consolidate first, then Transcode?

Thanks,

Paul
