Or put another way, Avid is turning into a company that wants to make 30% of everyone else's products. In that universe it makes sense to use someone else's hardware and tack on their own take. Or someone else's title tool, color corrector, etc.

Interesting. Not a single word on why you'd want this and spend $2K more than buying the Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K Extreme. I can see the differences on paper, but to me they don't amount to an extra $2K. I would've thought that would shake out by now.

To the best of my knowledge, that's indeed true for Avid's codecs and for Apple ProRes. On the latter, the flag often kicks in by itself in QT player, regardless of MC's setting. Watch the same clip in VLC and you'll see a difference.

Regardless, same-as-source remains same-as-source, save for the playback level flag (which is not respected by all players).

I've had crazy instances where SAS created a video file with more than one codec that was of massive size. A video file that was mostly DNXHD but partly uncompressed. I'm guessing that was a bug. Transcoding the sequence first created a file of expected size.

But the whole point of SAS is same as source so transcode not needed.
So a video mixdown first is doing the transcode. Then its SAS export which is a re-wrap.
If you do a SAS export and all content has to be created or transcoded its not really a SAS.

To my knowledge, SAS exports: re-encode media that is not of the target codec, render all unrendered effects on the fly, and flatten the entire video into one seamless clip. So doesn't really seem like a simple re-wrap of your media.

Isn't the point of an SAS to just re wrap your encoded media. Once you do a level change you can't just apply that to the media without decoding. Adjusting levels and re-encoding.
So the level choice can only set a flag that indicates what the content is so that the next process knows how to handle it.
