[Avid-L2] What's With MC and Wave Forms?!

 

I guess I'm just in a complaining mood… but the hell's wrong with MC and wave forms? I'm on Mac OS X, MC 2018..1, and whenever I work with no audio data (wave forms in the time line), all is fine. No crashes. But turn on wave forms, and it's nothing but crash crash crash.

I have plenty of horsepower under the hood and still, wave form redraws take forever, and the timeline basically sits like an idiot, unusable, until the audio tracks are finished redrawing and all icons are reinstated. Move the playhead, and wham! here we go again — redraw and wait. Try to get back to cutting too soon, before it's finished, and wham! there it goes again.

What is it about the wave forms that makes MC such a pain in the ass? And I say this as someone who practically edits by the wave forms.

You can change the alpha interpretation in the Link settings (before you link, only). Annoyingly, it is the reverse of that in the Import settings. Avid? Avid? And high time we could switch interpretation in Source settings. Sigh.

So, I know there was a change in AE a few versions ago, that screwed up all my old render presets - so I've been making new ones.

Weirdly, though the import duration is consistently wrong. What you described is EXACTLY my issue. I used to be able to input the desired number entirely using the number pad, and NOT by manually using the sliders. Very annoying. Feels like a bug to me.

Will double check the 0.0 and position issue and report back, in the meanwhile I have to add that three digits numbers cannot be entered, as the input field will only accept two digits: if entering eg 125 the result will be 5, since the effect editor will register 12 as a first entry and 5 as a second entry (it used to accept three digits before, waiting for the 'Enter' key to apply the change); to move or resize an image over 99 requires manually moving the slider, cannot be performed with the number pad. Don't know if it's a bug or a feature, and it's not Your issue David, but could be related, both bugs could come from some rewriting of the Effect Editor code.

Instead of having to fix flicker in post, you might want to ask the DP to shoot it correctly.  In my experience, flicker isn't generally a problem if you shoot with a 180° shutter angle..  For daytime exteriors, given the sensitivity of today's cameras even at their lowest ISO settings, and the need to stay in the sweet spot of the lens' aperture range, this means you'll need ND filters.  This is a known problem when shooting around propellers, with known solutions, e.g.:
