Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

[Avid-L2] Nablet XAVC-S AMA Plugin vs. Avid's Addition of XAVC-S

I read a few weeks back that the latest Avid MC has built in XAVC-S support and Avid's implementation removed dependencies on the QT library components, or whatever the proper term is.  Yesterday I got an email from Nablet about an ama plugin for XAVC-S compatible back to Avid 7.07 and 8.X and up.

I doubt Avid will be back adding to previous versions of Avid MC the new XAVC-S support but I don't know for sure.  In the past bug fixes sometimes migrated to older versions but a new feature like this probably isn't the same.

Can anybody from Avid, or elsewhere, enlighten me on how far back Avid's internal implementation of XAVC-S will go.  So far I've only heard it is on the latest version.

Re: [Avid-L2] Wacom Issues with Avid 8.6.5?

That's very interesting.  There is no Eucon on the original system that showed wacom quirks but my home system has the latest EuControl I just updated to get my MC Color Panel to work now that I've upgraded to Sierra 10.12.X mac OS.

z840s have been around for a few years now. If you can afford to wait a little bit, I wonder whether there might be new CPUs announced...

I was able to get solid information from Sorenson regarding CPU/GPU utilization. With respect to Squeeze, MainConcept is no longer supporting CUDA processing so it's CPU all the way for compression/conversion.  And with h264, Squeeze will push towards 100% CPU utilization.  They also recommend at least 1GB of RAM per CPU core, any more than 2GB/Core is overkill.

The only information I can find on MC's CPU utilization is that it's certified for up to 64 cores (hyperthreading inclusive).  Can anyone report how many cores are active and how much CPU utilization occurs during renders on the Intel Xeon E5 v4 series 2660, 2680 and/or 2690 CPU's?

[Avid-L2] [FR] Revert 'Max Versions' of file in the Attic

TO:
Avid-L2

M.M.
B.C.

RE:
[FR] Revert 'Max Versions' of file in the Attic

Hello all,

I'm poking around version 8.9.1.
Several things that initially come to mind:

1.
Bin Settings:
The maximum versions of a file in the Attic has now been limited to 999. It would be great of this could be set back to allowing any value typed in. Why? Because I (and I imagine others) save frequently. I do it so often that I don't even remember having saved just moments previous to when a crash occurs. Previously, I estimated saving 3 times per minute (180 times/hour) and I figured a 10 hour work day. So, I set my Max versions of a bin at 1800 (and max files in a project's attic at five time that number, which is 9000).

2.
Timeline Settings:
Edit Tab > Default Segment Tool
The default has been changed to Segment Overwrite. This is a **very** welcome change (so, thank you!), though I suggest that it be announced (if it was, and I missed it, I apologize). Additionally, while I'm on that setting, I beg for the labeling be changed to conform to Avid Media Composer terminology. The 2 selections would/should be labeled as: Extract/Splice-In Segment Tool and Lift/Overwrite Segment Tool (ditch the term 'mode' for those).

3.
I was crashing a lot when setting-up new User Settings in 8.9.1å (even with new project, new user, and all new settings in the settings folder inside the app folder). It seemed tied to saving Workspaces or using the keyboard shortcut Cmd = to open the Composer settings (all other methods did not crash). I'm on OS 10.12.5, MBP (late 2011), 16GB RAM. After a dozen crashes and various troubleshooting I think things are working at this point, but I'm not sure what did the trick, sorry.

4.
And, totally unrelated to anything above (#2 made me think of it), I'm lobbying for the Red Smart Tool Trim to be renamed to match it's Red Segment Tool counterpart (can it be labeled as a tool, rather than a mode, in all locations now, too?). So, IMHO, it should rightly be named as Lift/Overwrite Trim. I know for most this seems minor but, as as someone who teaches the software, consistency is helpful for someone who is learning. Additionally, the exceptional behavior of the tool is that it Lifts material out, leaving Filler behind.

Thanks gang!

Cheers,
Benjamin

[Avid-L2] Wacom Issues with Avid 8.6.5?

I recall there were issues for wacom users after Avid 8.6.4.  I had thought the problem had begun with 8.7.X but in downloading 8.6.4 so I can be in sync with my main client I noticed 8.6.5.  I'm going to start googling for the past threads I vaguely recall but if anyone remembers exactly when the recent round of wacom issues on macs started and when it was supposedly resolved I'd appreciate the info.

My best recollection is the problems started after 8.6.4  so I put a place holder at that version for upgrades a while back.

[Avid-L2] Re: Spec'ing a new Z840 - typical ?'s

I'd agree with Bourke.

Storage is so cheap RAID 5 is long past its usefulness. I've seen too many old RAID 5 systems lose a second drive during the thrashing they get on a rebuild that all data's lost to risk using them.
RAID 1 or RAID 10 simple.

Re: [Avid-L2] Spec'ing a new Z840 - typical ?'s

I don't get it.

Raid 5 takes lots of calculations. A software raid thus takes CPU to do this.
A hardware / external raid 5 does this for you.
So, you don't want an internal raid 5 if there is no dedicated hardware inside your box to take care of that.

But, on the road, how much footage do you need to ingest?
8 TB drives are dirt cheap. Why not add two large drives  in raid 1 (Mirroring, no math needed. Just for safety.)?

Is 8 TB not enough if you are on the road?

If not:
Now, if you have a tower to travel, you don't travel light anyways.
A QNAP is light, cheap and compact.
Why not add that if you need a tremendous amount of storage?

You are correct Job.

My hesitation on the PCIe drive was that the HP Z840 configuration site only allows RAID 0 as an internal RAID option with PCIe selected as a boot drive.  I would like to have an internal RAID 5 for jobs where I take the tower on the road.

BTW, the HP Z8xx series chassis fits perfectly in a BVW series Thermodyne shipping case.
