Terry,

That would be an AVC-Intra option board, which I don't think handles AVCHD at all. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: [Avid-L2] Preferred BOB for MC6?

I'd hurry, as there's a promo to upgrade from any old version to Symphony 6.5 now (expires 14 dec). Videoguys sell a upgrade bundle with Nitris DX for 5K now.

That said, I'm sure that Mojo DX is as reliable. More so than 3rd party options.

MC6 likes fast machines. If you use third party hardware, even more so.

Nitris DX gives you the most I/O options.

Nitris DX is made by Avid which means if it doesn't work, they have to solve the issue.

Nitris DX is the only hardware solution that enables "Universal Mastering" in Symphony.

Nitris DX has a daughter card option which accelerates AVCHD handling which you said you use.

If you don't need those features, save the money and use Blackmagic as it's the cheapest alternative.

Nitris DX still wins in regards to performance and feature set. It
obviously the most expensive.

Just wanted to add that we're also willing to go iMacs if
Thunderbolt I/O seems to be the way to go.

[Avid-L2] Preferred BOB for MC6?

We are currently still on MC5.5, using Adrenaline boxes for our
I/O. We own three seats of MC6 that we're not using yet. The boss
is interested in moving up to MC6, or even 6.5, but of course
that means moving to a different BOB.

We shoot P2, AVCHD and Canon's MXF formats, but have to deliver
on HDCAM tape to our stations, so we need reliable Digital Cut.
On very rare occasion we have to digitize from Composite,
Component and/or (HD)SDI.

Q 1) What hardware are you using, and are you happy with it in
regards to #1 Stability, and #2 function/features.

Bonus question, we are currently using 8 core Nehalem Mac Pros
that we're happy with. Of course we'll need to upgrade the OS
along with Media Composer, but,
Q 2) does MC6 need faster hardware to run on?

Any input appreciated!

[Avid-L2] Re: i5 vs. i7

No real issues. I'm just doing blurs with storage over ethernet to an edit share. Relinking will sometimes cause a main buss thread error but I see that on MacPros too. I'm not sure what the actual configuyration is but it appears it's from a local rental house. I'll check the exact configuration ob Monday.

All running off Thunderbolt. The question is, is there enough bandwidth? Will the sound stay in sync with the client monitor? If it does hang together it has big ramifications for the MacPro and it's future. If it works I have a client who wants to put in 30 of the suckers. Anybody running AVID in this configuration?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: i5 vs. i7

I'm running MC5.5 and Premier Pro on a 27" Imac, I7, 16gigs of ram, 250
Solid State HD. We have 1 external monitor, and a Pegasus Drive array
running off the thunderbolt, and another monitor running off the mini port.

Rock solid, and very comparable with the similarly equipped I7 Windows 7
machine that I freelance at another shop. That machine has the same
processor and Ram, and SATA drives. The Mac seems slightly faster,
which would be expected with the solid state system drive.

No specific testing, just my feeling.

[Avid-L2] Re: i5 vs. i7

Freelanced at a facility running a similar config and a DeckLink I/O device last week, the system was kind of stiff compared to i7 PC setups, but I bet it would be OK for someone who never took a drive on the competing systems! Oh, and audio scrub didn't work above cuts, the sound output disappearing over the last few frames of the outgoing clip and the first few of the next clip, rather uncomfortable to edit sound with such an appliance, I definitely prefer workstations.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: HDV into Symphony Mac

Might be good for the OP but not for me (numerous systems in a university). As I said - it is a fast import so not a big deal.

You should get 'Fast Import of MPEG files' as Avid just rewraps the HDV. No point in changing the Import settings or choosing a resolution. We do this on software-only MC 6.5. We have a couple of systems with MX02 Minis so I could test that next week.
