Re: [Avid-L2] Help; Need to run Media yadda, now OT

I meant no harm I certainly meant no yadda  yadda; this is about losing work when there is very little work and about six family's financial survival. It's not yadda yadda. It's hoping the PPP government loans will keep small businesses alive while all work from home on gear that works.

I assume "new Mac" means one with Catalina?

Have you tried the 2020 Beta?

Hi Owen,

Assuming you mean you're looking for a version that will run on Catalina, if you can get to the Download Center from my.avid.com, scroll near the bottom to "PUBLIC BETA" which will take you to a link for the Catalina beta.  Current version is Beta 3 from Feb 6.  I've been running it on my laptop okay.

Re: [Avid-L2] Upgrading OS on early 2009 24 inch iMac stops at Yosemite 10.10.5?

Those date tricks as I understand it are about fooling the certificates that expire so if you downloaded the OS when it first came out often times those don't work a year later but in this case the installer runs without a hitch until the end when it says no packages can be installed.  This is after the whole hour long process and it leaves the volume stranded and not knowing what it use to be until I reinstall Yosemite, which seems to just be repairing some part of the drive that got whacked in the process.  I thought it said at the beginning it would determine if the upgrade was compatible with the computer before starting the process.  I'm going to ask on MacProUpgrade Facebook group.

Re: [Avid-L2] Upgrading OS on early 2009 24 inch iMac stops at Yosemite 10.10.5?

That would make sense if I was using a combo updater which is about all you can find in the app store downloads.  I am actually accessing my apple account and downloading the purchased El Capitan.  I'm assuming that is an all inclusive update just like I had used on my macpro at home when I went to Sierra.  Someone on the list gave me a link for a direct installer to 10.12.6.  It may be true that El Capitan has a flashing thingy happening from Yosemite but I would think the purchased link would take that into account.  Of course Apple does everything in their power to mess with John Moore whenever possible.  Not that I take it personally.

Re: [Avid-L2] Upgrading OS on early 2009 24 inch iMac stops at Yosemite 10.10.5?

There's a little trickery when you try to update to El Cap on these iMacs. Try changing your date back to February 16, 2016, then initiate the upgrade.

Curious is OWC's compatibility chart wrong in this regard?  Other newer iMacs l2.1s will take El Capitan at work

There is a note on the chart no blue tooth Handoff.  I think that has to do with blue tooth connectivity for certain tasks but I'm not familiar with hand off.

Re: [Avid-L2] Looking for new hard drive catalog software

Hi Tod… no problem, I'll read about it when I get my Inside Tips😉

I have not had the problem lately, but sometimes the updated NeoFinder library is not available right away for the others access.

And now we're all working from home, so connecting to the database via VPN sucks - it is super-slow. Glacially slow.

If anyone has a recommendation for a cross-platform, web-accessible hard drive catalog, please let me know.

Thanks!

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar  Various Avid events are in the Calender.  If you have an event you'd like posted,  pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests,  Help Wanted,  Freelance Listings and For Sale sections.  Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas.  Job Postings will remain up for 1 month.   Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files-  The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes.  Check back often for changes.

Photos -  Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain.  Photos will be posted after moderator approval.  Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

I have found that the links work when launched using Safari as your browser.  Must be an Apple thing.
Also, keep in mind that if an OS is 'too old' for your computer, the App Store will spit up a warning and refuse to allow the download.

Yep, it goes to the Apple App Store and allows me to download Mojave and High Sierra.  I mean I literally just downloaded on two different systems.  So I don't know what you're doing wrong.

Just an FYI –

Sierra link works fine.

High Sierra and Mojave go to Apple Store and thus links are broken.
