Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Canon D5....

Oliver,

Very handy, succinct reference tool. I will be referencing it often when
others (Cow, etc.) ask how to post their 5D footage.

Yes, I saw that. Nice of him to do so. I reference him a lot in the post and many of the workflow things I'm doing were picked up by me from his blog entries ( http://philipbloom.co.uk/blog/ ).

[Avid-L2] A plea for Rec run TC on file based shoots, and to introduce 23.976 DF TC

(crossposted to the other L...)

I want to start a discussion on timecode.
First the easy part.
I am thinking that there is no need to shoot Rec Run tc anymore on file
based shoots / workflows.
(Unless you shoot XD cam and ingest 'traditional' with a deck and 422
control, but that is not what i call file based...)

One reason to shoot Rec Run was to make the ingest process more seamless
(with all the trouble of undetected small TC breaks...)
But for a file based workflow, it makes sense to know the time of shooting,
and it definitely will lessen the double timecodes.
(each source start on 00:00:00:00)

Of course another good reason was to have each source hours reflect the tape
name.
(And for the ones longer around, that has saved each and everyones butt at
least once...)

However, going back to originals is less and less needed.
(That does not mean that you should not keep a good record of sources, and
use the 'tape / reel / disk' labels always!)

So why not shoot TOD and give the editor some more info.
Handy to find back lost shots ("did you shoot it before or after lunch?"
comes to mind.)
But more important, more options to synchronize.

More and more (cheap) equipment is entering the playground.
And since there is more, the amount of cams / audio recorders / cell phones
that you have to use during a session is increasing.

So if you shoot TOD, you have the ability to 'sync' sources based on their
shooting time / date.
Of course it will not be frame accurate, but will get you very close.

This whole idea started while I was making my LTC_Systime application.
Intended to lock DSLR cams to BWF recorders.
And that brought up the next issue, the need for 23.976 DF TC.
Mind the use of 23.976. If you shoot true 24, there is no need for DF,
as the TC will be in sync with the time on the wall.

But not with 23.976, same as with NTSC.

If you want to use the internal clock of a device, that will run in 'time on
the wall' time.
So the timecode will be in sync with Drop Frame.

So no problem if the shoot was Drop frame, but if you have to match up with
non-drop frame shoot, you have a problem.
Or, if you want to match the end of a 23.976 long take to a drop frame
shoot, you also have a problem.

If a NDF running cam was reset at exactly midnight,
it would be possible to calculate the corresponding matching TC.
I don't see that happening often...

Thus to keep everything sync as possible, why not have 23.976 DF TC?
Principle can be the same, forget 2 TC frames every minute except for the
minutes dividable by ten.
Or to make it more accurate (as i think it should be), just drop ONE tc
frame every 1000 frames.
(Remember the speed of 23.976 = 24 * 1000 / 1001

Am i right?

[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Does anybody shoot pushes and pulls anymore?

You want scary turn the scanner to the aircraft freqs. I nearly soiled myself when I heard Burbank Tower talking to a private plane saying that if they were heading for Santa Monica they were going 180 degrees in the wrong direction. Or commercial pilots saying to the tower they don't see it on the map and I could hear the rustling of the maps in the cockpit. But the funniest was a conversation from the tower where I couldn't hear the pilot on the tower. The controller said in a loud voice, "Son, don't ever hesitate to ask that question!" I never figured out what the question was but by the tone of the controller it was a dozy.

I recently resurrected my old Radio Shack PRO-92 scanner which I'd not
monitored for probably four years. After just a couple hours
listening to the Columbus PD freqs I came to the conclusion that COPS
will no doubt end up being the longest-running TV series in history...
by a long shot.

What really astonished me is the marked increase in the number of
calls involving guns - both seen and heard.

And just now a report of a car going down a street near where I used
to work (and often ride my bike) firing "machine guns". The Fuck?

When I was a kid we threw water balloons and the occasional egg for
"fun". Now it's dumb-ass Mid-west gangsta wannabes emptying clips at
who knows what.

Hey Canada - anyone need an editor / sound designer / digital media /
maintenance guy? I'm unarmed**, my rates are quite reasonable and I
don't mind cold weather one bit.

Oh John if only I had a dollar every time I heard that while shooting COPS.
;-) The best was when we exploded into a pot holed floored trailer in
Florida and the toothless occupant complained I was dragging mud in the
door... Of course the classic was in Houston when an alcohol thrashed
trailer park occupant mouthed off to my sergeant who was Asian and stupidly
remarked, "Hey china men can you dance?"

Under deck preferences there is Host-DV Capture Offset and Digital Cut Offset. I seem to recall other offset options maybe back on Express Pro or media composer. Perhaps somebody remembers. I'm looking at a Mac SNDX 3.5.4

On DS and even FCP, you could set frame offsets for capture and output which are very helpful for capturing or outputting through a Teranex where there is a 4 frame delay. Is there any sort of console command in Symphony that will do this?

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Does anybody shoot pushes and pulls anymore?

That's funny! I'm constantly complaining that shooters have abandoned
the old practice of holding the beginning and end of a zoom. I get
zoom, swish, zoom, and no static shot.

"Tite" was how I was taught to write up my camera cards for sitcom work. One less letter saves a lot of time.

Re: [Avid-L2] Saving seq in Symphony 4 takes 4ever

I was working on MC 4.0.4 the other night and noticed that it takes forever to add a dissolve. It's probably less than 5 seconds, but on my system at home running 3.5.9 it's instant. The 4.0.4 system is a fresh install running on a new quad Z400.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Does anybody shoot pushes and pulls anymore?

Flame On! -Johnny Storm
John,

My favourite cameraman, Eric Rankin (not related to the reporter of the
same name but both great guys) may he RIP, only gave me pans, zooms,
pushes or pulls if they were motivated. You could hear the line in your
head while you first saw it. Then it was just a matter of picking up his
last take. Woe to the reporter who did not write the line to match. But
just in case he held each end for an extra 5 seconds.

Less experienced camerapeople either give you the unmotivated ,WTF was
that for?, or the please stop soon? anytime now? somewhere? anywhere?
forget it I could cover the entire item with this damned POS.

Eric also gave me roomtone, great sequences, better audio than most
audio guys, great lighting even when he did not have time and many
smiles as an editor. What is roomtone? Look it up kiddies.

John sausage stuffing, turd polishing, whatever you call it, when it
stops being fun its time to change something. Swapping the keyboard and
tablet for a shotgun and a bear trap might not be a bad idea.

Nuff said. -Stan Lee

I remember the days of shuttling through field tapes on 3/4 and I could always
find a usable zoom in or zoom out. It really wasn't that difficult IIRC. Since
I'm doing more online these days I'm always butting my head against the static
shot that someone has put a move on, to give it a little life etc... Don't
people shoot zoom ins and outs anymore? I find it hard to believe they don't
exist on the field tapes and if they do why aren't they used in my final online
sequence? I find the moves forced on these shots rival the image quality of
maybe a squeeze zoom or the A-51 image quality. I know I need to order another
case of "shut up" and just keep shoveling but really what's the deal? Is it
time to borrow Bob's shot gun? But do I go postal on the camera folks or the
offline guys or both? Man I need a nap. Hey you cameramen get off my yard!!!!

Okay, something is VERY wrong with your system. Is this a rental or someone's system you will be on for a while?

Hey TErry,
My seq is act one of a show. 8 1/2 minutes. cuts and a few whip pan
type of things. NO sapphire or Boris Plugins. few titles. nothing that
should make it take as long as it does.

i do have a few bins open, but again,i'm just putting the system
through it's paces, so there's not alot on the system, or in the bins.

[Avid-L2] Re: Saving seq in Symphony 4 takes 4ever

How big is your sequence? Unless you have an hour show with tons of sources and tons of effects, it shouldn't take long at all to save. How large is the actual bin? (check at system level)

What version are you on? The very early versions had bugs that caused long saves. (We're talking 1.x versions)

After major operations, like batch capture and rendering, Symphony autosaves. It will save every open bin that has been changed. That can include links. So lets say you decompose into a bin, and use that to capture. Every time you stop, it autosaves. If you also have the sequence in there, it will be saving a much larger bin. If you have the sequence in a separate bin and it is open, that bin will get saved also.

Because of this, I tend to only have the bins open I immediately need. If batch capturing, only the bin with clips to be captured open.

Also, what version of system are you running? With Symphony Nitris, you really need Vista 64 to not run out of memory all the time.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Install MC on a new partition, same computer

I understand now.

So what messages are associated with the error?

Also did you see fine print anywhere warning of this?

Here is what Avid has to say on the subject:

Q. What if I need to run the trial for longer than 30 days? Or if my
trial runs out before I am done evaluating the software?

A. The free trial has a 30-day limit. After the 30 days expire, you must
purchase a copy of the software in order to run your Avid application.
The trial version cannot be reset.

Q. Can I work on a project in the full version that was created in the
trial version?

A. Yes but only in the current shipping version. While the trial
version is fully functional bins will not open in older versions of the
editor. Example: Bins created in v4.0 will not open in v3.0/7.0 or v3.5/7.5.

Can of worms that...

Terry already gave you the obvious answer of cost. When you look at the free apps, you still have to look at where you are going to end up. With free apps (RED tools, MetaFuze, etc.) + a desktop solution (Apple or Adobe), you are going to end up being able to create master files (or set of files) that can be a greater frame size than HD. With Media Composer, you top out at HD unless you go to DS. DS is outside of the budget for many. Although HD is more than adequate, the "sales pitch" has been that it isn't. Granted that's pure BS, but many producers have bought into it.

Aside from that obvious issue, After Effects does offer some great tools and has attracted many professional users, especially in the Hollywood VFX community. A native RED workflow is attractive here as well, so After Effects and even Premiere Pro get used. Although these people aren't as penny-pinching as others, they often have "moonlighting" operations out of their houses, where they wouldn't spring for a DS, Flame, etc. They can often get the same work done at home on After Effects (+ time) that they might do "at work" using more expensive tools.

After Effects "plusses" include great plug-in support, color management tools, wide codec support and resolution-independence.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Install MC on a new partition, same computer

I might not have been very clear. I have had several systems running 4.0x of
MC on the 30 day temp license.

If and when that 30 day period goes by and the license is not upgraded to a
permanent lic, after the 30 day period, those projects are toast. I do not
know what happens in a shared storage environment. Would really like to
know.

If the licenses are upgraded to Permanent during the trial period, then
there's nothing to report.

I currently have 2 systems at the office with the lic expired (around 40
days). Putting in a new, permanent license or even a dongle driven version
still does not open either the Project or the Bins.

I'd like to know why or what it is I'm doing wrong, if that's what is
causing the problem.
