Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Symphony option promo

I was successful I took the activation code and sent it to Marianna.  What I first noticed was a symphony option appeared in my Avid MYProducts page but was not attached to the dongle.  I followed up with Marianna and she was able to turn my MC dongle project to a symphony crossgrade or some such thing so future updater files will include the symphony option.  I don't really know if I had just activated the symphony option for the dongle if it would have just lived on the dongle like my other symphony dongles.

I have had a mc dongle and a symphony dongle for years plus a symphony software activation license.  Now I have two symphony dongles or I guess that should correctly read two MC with symphony option dongles.

Click the dropdown window that says 'Timecode' and change it to 'Source Bin Column'. Then the third drop down window will have 'Name' selected, but lets you select any source bin column.

[Avid-L2] Re: Could Wacom Tablet issues with Avid be related to Sierra Combo U

So today I got my replacement pen for Intuos 4.  The pen says it's compatible with Intuos 5 and Intuos Pro too.  I wonder why my Intuos Pro Pen didn't play with the Intuos 4.  Perhaps the older driver didn't recognize or is wasn't backwards compatible?

At any rate with the new pen and the latest driver (WacomTablet_6.3.25-2) the intuos 4 is behaving correctly right out of the gate.  If nothing goes wrong then my issues were either the worn nib or something more physical/electronic in the old pen and or the old and or the slightly older driver.  I'm not going to back rev the driver to the one wacom had originally suggested for Intuos 4 and OS 10.12.5.  Perhaps it would work too but before I got the replacement pen wacom had suggested trying the (WacomTablet_6.3.25-2) driver with my Intuos 4 to see if that cleared it up.

Bottom line out of the gate things are behaving.  So was it the really old driver, the worn nib that perhaps made the tip jitter when dragging? or is it this latest driver (WacomTablet_6.3.25-2).  Not sure but glad it's working at least for now.  I'll post if the problems return.

---In Avid-L2@yahoogroups.com, <bigfish@...> wrote :

Well after breaking my Intuos 4 pen trying to pull a nib out that I couldn't grab I installed my new Intuos Pro tablet.  I'm not sure if the Intuos Pro is also considered an Intuos 5 Pro.  At any rate with it's new driver the new tablet works correctly.  This has also been my wife's experience on her work system.

I've recontacted wacom support and they suggest I try using the latest wacom driver with my intuos 4.  I did plug my old Intuos 4 tablet into the system and the new driver (WacomTablet_6.3.25-2) does see the Intuos 4 correctly but without a pen I can't check that aspect of it.

I hope the Intuos 4 with the latest driver will solve the pen tip issue as I prefer that tablet on my home system.  The Intuos Pro is similar but doesn't have readouts by the side buttons and there is no mouse with it.  I don't know why they didn't provide a mouse with the Intuos Pro, perhaps because it is also a touch pad?  I like having the mouse option especially when I want to see tool hints.  I have found I can't hold the pen steady enough to get the tool tips to pop up so I have used the wacom mouse in those situations.

Oh well at leat the Intuos Pro is behaving.  I'll report back when I get the new Intuos 4 pen at the end of the week.

[Avid-L2] Re: 171019 Odd MXF file structure?

To add an additional quadry to this.  the masterfile mxf that links to the sub mxf files in the media folder breaks up the stereo pairs of audio from the mxf audio file media folder.  For example the A04 mxf audio file is a stereo pair of silence but when the master mxf file is linked in Avid the two silence tracks are separate from each other in not contiguous tracks, something like one silence on track 4 and another on track 9.  When I take the individual mxf files in the media folder and link to them then auto sync them then audio pairs are contiguous but the track order does not follow from _a0 to _a5.  I haven't bothered to figure out what order they end up in but I'm curious what determines the order of the audio tracks in an auto sync clip.  Is it bin order or some other thing?  I do see the tracks that are mxf _a3 thru _a5 in the auto sync clip end up as clip tracks 1 thru 6 but it appears there order is _a5 becomes clip tracks 1 and 2,  __a4 becomes clip tracks 3 and 4, and the _a3 becomes clip tracks 5 and 6.

Not only should they be tracks 7 thru 12 but even there numeric sequence is reversed in order. This leads me to think there is some other than suffix of the clip names creating the order.  Is there some other subtle metadata in the food chain that tells avid how to order them.

It's hard to figure what's dictating what as the auto sync of the individual clips based on source code yields a vastly different track order than that of the master mxf file that links to the individual clips in a bizarre order.  This sounds like a VideoToolShed question.

I know that peak level is different than loudness.  I assume loudness is more the dialogue norm type spec they are sighting.  We are trying to clarify with the network.  When I do a test with bars and tone everything comes out at correct level so I'm convinced I'm not doing anything other than passing things through at unity.  If there were audio tracks being multed I would expect to see far different track overshoot than I am.

The network also gave us an mxf file of the entire episode.  I'm not sure what it was created in but there is a "master" .mxf then in a sub folder are individual .mxf files for video and 6 stereo audio tracks and a vanc track.  The master file is "xmn1792625.mxf" then there is a folder named "media" that contains "xmn1792625_v0.mxf". "xmn1792625_vanc0.mxf" and 6 audio files "xmn1792625_a0" with the additional audio files changing the suffix to a1-a2 etc... for a total of six stereo tracks.

In Avid I can link to the master file or the individual files.  When I first linked to the master file it showed offline in Avid but when I started to link to the individual media files it popped online.  This file includes bars and tone which play back correctly but the audio tracks are in a whacky order.  This file show the exact same audio peak that I'm experiencing with the avidmedia files the network provided.  All I can see is I'm passing things through at unity and it seems the mix we were given is off.  More will be revealed on this

I'm curious if anyone knows what software creates master .mxf files that point to subfoldered media files.  When I export my .mxf J2k file Avid creates a single file that has video and audio tracks.  Whatever this file came from the structure is different.  There is also a "manifest.xml", "shim.xml" and an "extra folder that contains an "amberfin.com" folder that contains some QC stuff I guess.  Does this point to this master mxf file coming from an Amberfin server thing?  Or is this something Premiere might create.  Just trying to play along with the network.
