no, a guess is a guess. A Hypothesis has a specific scientific meaning which is the way I use it. It is a proposed explanation for the observed data, put out so it can be tested.

No, my hypothesese are educated, or they would be guesses. If they were merely educated guesses they'd be as accurate (or not) as everyone elses'.

[Avid-L2] Canon 5D Re-linking Problem

I believe I've read something about this before -- but when dealing with Canon DSLR 5D files -- are there known problems that prevent relinking media to Master Clips?

I created a project a while back where I AMA-ed a bunch of files, transcoded all of them to DNxHD and set the job aside.

Months later, and for reasons which are too complicated to describe, I Imported (not AMA-ed) those same exact same 5D files to DNxHD in a newly-created project.

Now, when I try to relink the Master Clips in the first project -- to the media created in the second project (using the exact same 5D QuickTime files -- I am unsuccessful. And I believe I have tried every variation of setting that would allow this to happen.

Is this expected behavior? Are there "Project" or missing "Tape Name" issues that are causing this problem? Or are the two methods of ingest (AMA to DNxHD -- vs -- Import to DNxHD) the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I'm told it goes well with a "Free Mustache Rides" camo ballcap.

But I digress.

Here's my contribution: an Avid purple triangle pinned to an EDL Manager hat sitting on an XPRI mousepad...

http://i53.tinypic.com/2ex2gdy.jpg

That's all I could find laying around the shop at the moment.

The XPRI pad is from the same NAB demo where Wilson flat-out busted the Sony guy behind the curtain actually driving the big iron while the Sony guy on stage turned fake Xpri knobs.

It was teh lulz :)

Re: [Avid-L2] Music Video workflow?

I hate when the don't shoot camera sound. Best approach I've seen is to sync
audio with a visual timecode in a video and do playback with that from an
iPad or video iPod. Cameras record the pre-roll timecode before playback
starts.

Yeah, that's how I was planning to to attack it. I know they shot no audio,
so ill be synching by clapper as they didn't slave timecode between cameras.

Re: [Avid-L2] Music Video workflow?

Hi, Mark,

Music videos are often shot in long, complete-song takes, at least if there are performance sections. If there are performance takes, then lay down your favorite, one. One big, long three and a half minute take (or however long it is). Or even if there are no performance takes, lay down the song. Then start building on top of it (on higher tracks). This base line track is your railroad track, and then you can make any type of fancy cars on top of it you wish. But at least you have a foundation to guide you.

In any case, that's how I used to do it!

[Avid-L2] Music Video workflow?

Hey All.

On Monday I'm cutting a music video with a 72 hour turn around to
final. I usually cut trailers and commercials and this is my first
foray into this kind of media. I was just wondering if there was anyone
out there who has any tips for expediting the workflow on it. I know my
software and hardware, just was wondering for any pratfalls to watch out
for in the realm of music videos.

Thanks

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: MC 5.5.x on a "Nehalem" Mac

Nehalem is... Like... 4th generation Mac pro? it definitely runs osx 64bit- the first gen Intel macs are... Coopertown? They are limited to 32bit by hardware. I'm running a harpertown and a nehalem in 64 bit, so those should run Lion. I'd be more concerned the lion has too much extra crap in it that's problematic for developers- but that's just me talking out of my arse... I'm no developer by any stretch of the imagination.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Avid Percent of NLE sales compared to FCP

How could it be anything BUT unsubstantiated. If it were substantiated you'd say, "I know that FCP X will have such and such a feature because I have specific proof from inside." THAT is substantiated. Proof. Something to bring to a court of law. Guessing at things, no matter how educated the guess, is still unsubstantiated. It's conjecture. Conjecture MEANS formuation of a theory WITHOUT PROOF. You CAN'T have proof about a piece of software that isn't being released for 12 months. You can make educated guesses, but that is conjecture. Otherwise your percentage would be 100%. Not to mention your own word "hypotheses." A hypotheses is a GUESS, a supposition, an opinion of an outcome. Scientists obviously guess pretty well, but a hypotheses is, by nature a GUESS.

There's no shame in guessing. I'm not saying you're a terrible blogger because you guess. Your guesses are educated.

If you want to donate to Red Cross quake relief, you can do so through your cell phone. Text redcross to 90999 to make a $10 donation. It will be on your next cell bill.

Just rumor that the first version of Intels will not be supported in Lion. After that, I don't believe workstations will be supported. I too use "data points" and reserve the right to be wrong, but...

Thunderbolt + Steve Jobs always streamlines hardware + They killed the server line + FCP X is not designed to work with any external hardware, in fact it may be designed towards the iPad style interface + the iCloud was yet another tipping of Jobs' hand that hew wants a centralized processor with semi smart terminals + I still believe that Steve Jobs is trying to own the entire pipeline from shooting to end viewer and he doesn't see the need for workstations in that universe.

The funny )or not) part is that I have seen in my lifetime the user go from dumb terminals connected to a mainframe, to the individual PC which set us free (Thanks to Apple) and now we are heading back (thanks to Apple). Very weird. Soon someone else will be able to do the 1984 ad with Apple being big brother.
