[Avid-L2] Ipad app to control audio mixer?
I remember hearing about this a while back and can't recall the name.
Also, is there anything similar to it/a port using Android?
Thanks

Great letter.
Several faves:
"… at heart I'm a liberal creative - an artist. We make up a large contingent of your customer base, yes we use technology, but as a means to an end and that is making beautiful things with our art."
"Mailchimp is easy to use and has lots of pictures of a funny monkey - but perhaps that kind of stuff only appeals to artists like me."
"...creative people are not stupid - but the majority of us are simply not interested in the language of the stock market, so please try and keep that kind of stuff to a minimum, it only reinforces the view of Avid being a corporate machine."

Dan kept as much of the film concept as he could. It does give it a nice touch for "experienced" editors.
PS: Dan will be on the 10th annual PreNAB Editors' Lounge panel, March 22nd. And this year it will be streamed courtesy of Keycode Media!

Nothing like that coming from Avid. The cheapest item in MC land is the academic license for $295. Usually this is a hacked version or something just isnt right... buyer beware.

[Avid-L2] Re: Is this for real? Avid please read
I am glad that all of you are so dead against pirate software. Here in the UK I feel like a lone voice. As a freelance editor in London I work at many different companies & edit suites (nearly always Avid). I frequently find other editors add to their skillset by doing After Effects on their own laptops while they edit on their employers Avids. I always make a point of asking them if they bought the After Effects software - and I have yet to meet ANYONE who paid for it. It makes me really cross - as someone who only buys legitimate software, how can I compete with that? I have told producers that this is happening and they are not interested as they get this extra work for free. And we are talking about major corporations. Grrrrrrrr

Chris,
This Frontline was shot by Ben McCoy, who is one of the best in the business in my opinion. Lensed primarily with Canon C300 as close-upcamera with Canon 5D MkIII as wide camera stacked side-by-side. Used to do it the other way around, but this provided a better sharpness match. Sometimes shoots with Sony 800 XDCam 422-50 as well.
Workflow is AMA transcode source clips to DNX4:1 for offline. For online the footage is re-ingested at DNX145. Huge number of photographs in this show. Graphics were created by Mark Dugas in After Effects and brought in at DNX220-10 bit.
We have a week to finish each program the week before air. On-line/grade was by Jim Ferguson here at our OutPost facility. Audio goes out to dubbing mixer Jim Sullivan for simultaneous mix with the online. Generall schedule is Monday/Tuesday is for ingest/color-correct mix. Wednesday and Thursday are for screenings and fixes, Friday is final inserts to HDCam master, tech-eval, and ship. Moving to file-based delivery to PBS next month.
This week we were in during the blizzard incorporating a prolog that couldn't be shot until Friday afternoon. Kudos to others on the team, including Chris Fournelle, Eric Gulliver and Megan McGough for cranking out a good-looking/sounding show every week on sometimes very difficult deadlines.

RE: [Avid-L2] Espera
One of the annoying things with all these companies is that although they
are basically just selling software but for some reason they haven't yet
arrived at a point where it can just be bought and downloaded from the
internet. Even deciphering the Aspera website is a mission.

There's a separate description of the data, kind of like... I'm out of my
expertise here... the way raid 5 works (??) that's delivered to the client -
then the client software does an inventory control and makes sure everything
was delivered - anything that didn't make it gets resent. LAYMAN'S
UNDERSTANDING! None of these products works without installing client
software - even if it's a java application that more-or-less hidden. Again,
if I understand correctly, File catalyst has a java app that can be loaded
through a web site so the client is unaware of what's going on, for the most
part. Aspera has a client app that has to be downloaded to the client
computer on first use - after that it's there until you either delete it or
it needs to be updated.

[Avid-L2] Re: Espera
It's the delivery system of choice for Sky Italia; to sending large files, unless You have a dedicated connection, I suggest overnight transfers, as as stated the Aspera steals all of the available bandwidth, and uploading can be paused and resumed at will.
